Apple Expands 'Nearby' Maps Feature to More Countries, Adds New Flyover Locations

Apple today expanded its "Nearby" feature in the Maps app to Austria, Denmark, Japan, and Switzerland. Introduced in iOS 9, Nearby is a feature that allows Apple Maps users to see restaurants, coffee shops, retailers, and other local points of interest using easily accessible categories.

Nearby is now available in a total of 13 countries, including Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Japan, Netherlands, Switzerland, UK, and USA.

Apple has also expanded the availability of traffic information in Maps to include Turkey, and it has introduced several new Flyover locations in the Maps app in Germany, England, and Japan, which are listed below:

- Augsburg, Germany
- Braunschweig, Germany
- Hanover, Germany
- Newcastle upon Tyne, England
- Niigata, Japan

For those unfamiliar with the Flyover feature in Apple Maps, it lets users see photo-realistic 3D videos of select locations, with tools for zooming, panning, and rotating to get a closer look at notable landmarks and points of interest. Some of the locations listed may have previously been available as Flyover destinations, but were just added to Apple's list of Flyover locations.

Apple is continually working to improve its Maps app, expanding the availability of Nearby, traffic information, and transit directions to additional countries, as well as introducing new Flyover locations on a regular basis.

Still five years behind Google Maps.

They could have bought Nokia Here Maps and immediately caught up. Instead they bought Beats.

Then Google bought Songza, a better product, for 1/100th the price and created Google Music as it now stands, which is arguably better than the Apple version.

How much longer can this go on?

Twenty years before GM went bankrupt they were the largest company on Earth. No one could have ever imagined GM going under.

One year later and still I don't understand why they bought beats. The moment in the Keynote presented by those guys was embarrassing...

The question really is - if you hate Apple so much, why do you put so much effort into posting these things. Let it go.

You clearly have not used Apple Maps or Apple Music on a regular basis. The only thing Google has is street view that is better. Apple has quietly surpassed them in every way. The Apple design has always been more appealing and elegant. As I have mentioned before I've been using it for deliveries and it's been perfect accept for a few new streets. Google couldn't even get me as close as Apple did when I tried them.

You really don't know. Street view is Google's only plus but nearly unusable on mobile devices because of their poor interface design. I use Apple maps everyday and it works better than Google's has for me.

Yes. As many as use Google maps or more on mobile. At my job, all of the iPhone users use Siri and maps to route their deliveries. Non of the android users trust Google maps enough to do it. That speaks volumes.

Same here, I'm a Geordie through and through. I'm glad we have been updated to flyover, hopefully it's a stepping stone towards 3D view.
 
For my use, Apple Maps caught up to Google Maps after Transit directions were introduced. Accuracy varies by city so I understand why not everyone is having a good experience on Apple Maps. In Toronto, location and directions accuracy are near perfect. I've had instances comparing a friend's Google Maps to my Apple Maps where we both agreed that Google's was either wrong or inefficient. I'm sure it happens the other way around too but it's gotten to a point where I trust Apple Maps so I deleted Google Maps from my iOS devices.

One feature that is still missing is StreetView but I far prefer Flyover to orient myself visually in an unknown neighbourhood. Street View can still be useful if you need a closeup of a store front but I've never liked its navigation through pictures. I'm looking forward to an update to Flyover that combines fluidly into the street level photos that Apple has been capturing.

A quick look suggests that in addition to Newcastle upon Tyne, larger buildings in in Gateshead, North Tyneside, and even some in Sunderland are also covered.
 
In the Adelaide Hills, Apple Maps has more accurate information than Google Maps. Only transit and street view are an advantage to Google. Google maps has a lot of wrong house number, roads that don't exist, missing roads and wrong road names.

Exactly. I don't hate Apple. I'm very very worried that what has been one of the wonders of human creativity is making MANY errors, obvious errors that any average geek wouldn't make.

Apple had camera vans cruising the country two years ago? Whatever happened to that footage? Maybe it's planned for the iOS X keynote announcement?

What don't I know? I find Street View very usable on both portable devices and on the desktop.

Good for you if Apple Maps matches your use case but for many not having a functional transit feature is an instant deal breaker. Even if you live in a city covered by Apple's transit data, it doesn't work if you live in the suburbs or if you need to travel outside of that city. Apple Maps is fundamentally broken for those of us who rely on public transport and that's most Europeans living in urban areas.

I do. I've used it extensively to get around in NYC and a bunch of cities in the US over the past few years. I'll admit it was pretty atrocious in NYC at first, but it's slowly gotten better -- much better. The new transit features are quite good and I use them several times a week. There are even alert icons when there are service disruptions or diversions.

I use Apple Maps mainly because it's seamlessly integrated into my phone and my Macs. I look something up on my Mac and favorite it, and it appears on my phone. I know, Google Maps has similar features for sure, but I just don't ever feel like it's as well integrated into my phone as Apple Maps.

I still have a couple of customized Google Maps I've used to make collections of restaurants and the like, and I do wish Apple had a similar feature.
