It is...get ready for an insanely long delay for the 14-inch and 16-inch redesigned MacBook Pros when they launch later this year. If you thought the "second half of May" launch was bad for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro with M1 (announcement on 4/20/21, and releasing ~ 1 month later on 5/20/21), I believe the 14-inch and 16-inch redesigned MBPs will have an further delays (announcement in October and release in Dec and if you didn't order in the 1st minute when the Apple store opened, you will be looking at Feb-March 2022 for the new items...
Definitely.
It makes the quote down below sounds a bit hilarious if the advice is taken literally:

and it sounds like customers who want one of the devices should be prepared to order as soon as pre-orders go live in order to avoid long waits for the new products
As in, “everybody, if we all gather around as soon as the preorders go live suddenly we will all escape the waiting line” 😅

Apple causing iPad and Mac supply shortages to make impression of high demand in second half of 2021
Don’t know if you mention “causing it” on purpose or by high quantity production.
If the latter, Macs, iPhones, Apple TV’s, etc are the minority overall by a very long shot compared to all the PCs, Linux and Co, Android devices, etc aggregated... like 10% let’s say? Not even? (Don’t remember the numbers).
If the former, I truly seriously believe that there’s nothing to gain from months waiting of non-sales... I don’t see the benefit of selling 10K units way late by halting production on purpose than just producing 100K units and sell them today or as soon as possible and revenue up 10x in a shorter amount of time and satisfy your customers (provided it’s plausible and non detrimental overall to push the production machine too hard). I’m no business expert though.

I hope people saying Apple is “causing” it or lying are just being sarcastic. Apple isn’t downplaying this. This shortage impacts everyone, including Apple. It’s a huge deal. Like, potentially killing my company huge. The current lead time for the primary component of my product is 30 weeks. Yes, 7 months. It’s a product basically only good for the summer. If things don’t improve I’ll have literally nothing to sell this summer. Not only that, but the component cost increased 45%.

I still don’t understand how you can have a silicon shortage beyond labor and exporting issuer. What could’ve happened, Did you run out of sand or something?

I think that crypto is part of the problem. They're new players and want the fastest and most powerful stuff.

Also, autos now use a ton of chips; EVs too.

How about not wasting M1 silicon on the iPad, where it’s a huge overkill, and instead reserving the limited supply of M1 for the Mac line. How about putting out a 14” MacBook Pro with M1 this spring and selling tens of millions of them?

Shouldn't be any delays to the iMac... That thing is oogly. You couldn't give me one.
I really do not like the colors, but I am looking at the plain silver one as my 5+-year-old iMac is slow (never get an iMac with 8gb of RAM, I will never make that mistake again). The M1 chip looks to be a good fit in an iMac with 16gb of RAM.

Yeah, I don't know... I have 64GB in mine (27" late 2017). I open a few productivity apps, lots of browser tabs, and a VM, and I'm at 32GB used. I don't know how anyone functions with less. I guess they swap a lot.

I‘ll wager it’s worse than that. People outside the industry don’t have a clue how bad the situation is.
Exactly. If you aren't in the tech space and you are surprised by the absurdly long wait times to get the Xbox Series S | X and PS 5, this will be just like that, except you won't have the bad user experience when ordering the products (eg put the item in the shopping cart, only to see it disappear milliseconds later, slow load times on shopping sites, crashing websites, etc).

At least with Apple, you will be able to place your order but to receive it, you will be waiting a long, long, long, long time, if you didn't place your order within the 1st minute of the Apple Store opening for orders for these highly anticipated laptops.....

Get ready to see headlines folks and don't be surprised by them either, because, as I said here and in my previous post, I am warning you and trying to prepare you!!!

The situation won't improve until Intel's and TSMC's new factories come online in 2023 at the earliest and when India's and US's pandemic situation improves!!

Sounds like I should order ten of them and then sell them on Ebay.

Yeah....become a scalper....it's the hottest new trend in sales these days....

I bought parts to build a complete system last fall. I'm astounded at how hard it is to get parts today - forget about MSRP.

I could have done well just to buy two of everything. I don't think that I could have bought a 5900X or 5950X last fall though. It was quite easy getting 10th gen Intel parts.

reason is because no one is buying intel....intel has a surplus of these chips because they are just sooooo hot and so inefficient compared to the ryzen equivalent....
