Curious to see how the revenue sharing works for developers of Arcade games. Are they sustainable?

In the age of annoying ads and IAPs, I actually like Apple Arcade. But I'm guessing it goes against the revenue generating IAPs and ads for developers.
According to "insider sources" on the web, Apple, at least primarily, does fixed payments to developers.

Sadly, buying games are also not exempt from developer/publisher abandonment. I can mention a number of old games I have to jump through hoops to get to play... Just now I'm figuring out how to get Battle for Middle-Earth running
All my old NES and Super Nintendo games still run perfectly fine?

I can still buy physical copies of those games, as well as tons of great DS games, and Wii/Wii-u games. They don't need internet to run and they're yours forever. Unlike modern Xbox and PlayStation (and apparently Apple)

Nothing more wonderful than popping in a PS5 disc and then waiting hours for a 30+GB download to complete. What's the darned disc for then?!

So if a developer makes an Apple Arcade game, then their business goes under (I can't imagine there being much revenue there), what that means is that such games will simply be gone forever.
No different than if the it goes under and they don’t maintain the game or their developer account. The game would be removed.

Yeah it is why I switched to 100% digital on PS5. If I have to download it anyway, no need to keep discs lying around that I have to switch out every time I want to play a different game.
Yeah, it is highly annoying when you bought a disc, put it into the console, and instead of being able to play right away, you have to wait for the game to download gigabytes of patches first. Might as well download the game to begin with and get the most up to date version.

I'm surprised that Apple weren't in a strong enough position to write it into the developer contract that Apple Arcade subscribers who already have the game on their device get to keep playing it indefinitely.

Yeah - I'd rather just buy a game. This subscription model is ridiculous.
But for the price of 1 game, you get to try and play 100+ games without ads or in-app purchase.

Granted, most of these are trash games, but for paid games, the games on App Store do not provide free trials.

Arcade is worth a try for many people.

I've turned to Apple Arcade for games. The ads displayed in "free" App Store games can be sooooooo annoying and disruptive to the point of truly feeling like the user experience is secondary to revenue generation.

My go-to game is Solitaire+, entirely free through Apple Arcade and it's a joy.
This is a reason I love Arcade too. And if I don't like something I didn't lose any money. Hated when games went from being good for a nominal fee to being freemium garbage you can to dig through for something decent, if you ever found it at all

What happens if one gets this sequence ?
1) Game is available on Arcade (no in-App purchase)
2) Then game is made available for download before removal from Arcade
3) Developer updates game to add in-App purchases

Will my kids be suddenly exposed to in-App purchases ?
No. I believe the developer would just have a different listing altogether for the non-Arcade version of a game. We already have the reverse of this today with all the "+" versions of non-Arcade games coming into the Arcade.

I don't play games, but I was curious how this compares to Xbox Game Pass, which Apple notoriously didn't allow in the App Store (and which I believe is available through Safari instead).

Apparently Xbox Game Pass also regularly removes games but gives you warning and lets you buy them outright at a discount before removing them if you want to continue playing them.

That sounds a lot less confusing than Apple's App Store within its App Store system.
This would be a great practice if implemented on the app-store.

They could even do it so that games are available both on Arcade and direct purchase. Keep the games in the app-store all the time and for those with the subcription you have acces to a big library of games. In case of them dropping a game you could always just purchase the game on the app-store.

I’m quite confident poeple would be into this and for those few games that get dropped, there would be a sele t group of people buying it. Revenue through Arcade and them extra revenue from the sale. A win-win for both developer and Apple.

The only reality is that in-app purchases and micro transactions make way more money than this kind of scheme. Unfortunatley for the consumers :/

Not really free if you have to pay for Arcade to get to it.
The problem with solitaire from MolityWare is that they have an app-store version, but it has tons of adds. Want to remove them? Sure. Pay 1,99€ per month or 10,99€ per year to play without adds. Once you pile up a few of this basic games in monthly subscription it really is a no brainer for the Arcade subscription. unfortunatley there is no pay once version. :/

Well, about as “gone forever” as all of the games made over the years by all the publishing houses that have gone under. Which, effectively, is not ‘gone’ at all as there are ways to play those games, still.

Perhaps there’s a higher payout given there’s no revenue stream. Being paid a guaranteed sum for 3 years is a pretty good deal.

Yes. But that's true for paid apps as well. If a developer removes an app from the App Store, you cant download it again. So if you try to re-downlaod it to your new iPad its gone.
