I love Mac and owned iMacs (and previously 2 Macbooks) for nearly 2 decades,BUT there is no way I buy these horrendous looking new iMacs no matter what.
design is very important for me.
So let’s hope by the time it’s time for my upgrade they discontinue this disaster of design and create something great again.
These are the worst Apple designed products EVER next to iPhone 5C and hunch battery case.

Completely valid point. 98 was hard. Job's was back and seemed to be into bringing the new iMac, iBook, and colorful G3 towers into the mix and letting some of the previously developed beige and black from the Performa / Sears years continue to roll.
Yeah, I completely agree and I'm sure deep down he was reeeeeally hating the transition period.

Completely off topic, I can't help but watch DIY videos of sticking new guts into an old iMac G4... still one of my most favorite machines.

What, you didn't think the move from the HOLY SHIH TZU design of the original iPhone to the meh design of the 3G doesn't rank up there? I drooled over my buddy's original iPhone and saved up and waited. And waited. Until the 4/4s came out.

With the iPad Pro having the same M1 chip as the Macs yet an OS no where near as good as macOS, they should probably explain to people why they should buy an iPad.
I hope WWDC this year will give us an answer on that. WWDC 2017 with iOS 11 was what convinced me to finally get an iPad with the much better multitasking and drag and drop etc.

The iMac g4 was a masterpiece. I would have loved to see the new iMac with a similar look. Take a Mac mini as a base and cpu and add a monitor and articulating arm to it. Then all your power and cable connections are on the table and the monitor is floating freely above the CPU.

What he really wants to say but can't is you should really buy a Mac for all the built-in subscription nagware.

I already know both MacOS and Windows, so not a selling point. I don't use any of those pre-installed apps, so not a selling point. I long for the flexibility and scalability / tailor-ability of Dell Precision Workstations. What I need from Apple is a full-sized desktop computer without a monitor that I don't want and standard expansion slots that I do want that is not as high-end as the current MacPro. I want a full size Mac"Mini" that will allow the use of the AMD or nVidia graphics card of my choosing.

You will never get what you want.

I'm with you on this one. Been an avid iPad Pro user since it debuted in 2015. iPadOS' WWDC 2019 introduction was amazing but unfortunately it's still far behind macOS. I really, really hope WWDC 2021 blows everyone away.

Yeah.. those sweet 30% of lots of apps and at some point all when they finally locked down the mac and force everything through the AppStore.

macOS is secure by virtue of obscurity, especially in high value targets, and by not allowing much control over the update scheme.
I can’t believe people still parrot this FUD. Mac had a minuscule 5% market pre-OSX, but had loads of viruses. Back when I fixed them for a living, every Mac people brought in for service had viruses. WinXP looked like Fort Knox by comparison.
Ironically, you mock "looking purdy" when that seems to be Apple's biggest marketing point, especially for updates. :D
Frankly, I find the candy color UI bleh🤮. I like OSX for the consistent UI and because a background task won’t jump to the fore without me bringing it to the foreground. Windows has a nasty habit of doing this. Irks me to not end when I’m entering a long list of numbers. 5 minutes of 10 key entry ending up as gibberish in Words instead of beautiful columns in Excel.
I like the boring look of WinNT.

Got a 16 inch MacBook Pro i9 8 core 16 GB 1 TB SSD. Never had better. Everything just works. I can run 10-20 apps at the same time without any performance issues.Loving it! BTW I installed Windows 10 via BootCamp. First time using Windows. Its like 200 persons have created Windows without any communication with each other. When I rebooted back to macOS Big Sur it was like someone offered me a glas of ice water in hell.

Here is a tip that I want to sheer. MacBook Pro 16 inch, Big Sur 11.2 Safari web browser version 14.0.3 and media player IINA version 1.1.2 You can activate IINA as a Safari extension in Safari preferences and then a IINA icon will appear in Safari toolbar, if Safari show a webpage with a video available and then you can press the IINA icon and IINA will play the video in a separate window. If you search for the porn site bangbros you have to be a member to watch some porn clips withs coast money but if bangbros sowing clips that won’t play cuz you're not a member you can press the IINA icon in the Safari toolbar and IINA will play all the porn clips that the webpage normally requires you to be a paying member. 😜

I hate micro-managing storage thats why I always max out my Macs, iPad and iPhone.
Agreed.
For what is worth, my 64GB iPhone X has been “full” for a good couple of years yet I have had to delete nothing. The smart auto offloading of apps, photos, less played lists/songs and overall storage management have made it feel like it got infinite space for how I use it. Granted, sometimes that annoying “reinstalling app because it got offloaded” pop up appears rarely... but beats having to micromanage it all. On a Mac that sounds a whole lot more dangerous though.

Maybe it's because I have been using (indoctrinated?) DOS/Windows computers for so long, I just find them easier to use than the Mac platform. Maybe for a newbie to either platform the Mac's might be easier to learn. But for me, it's like trying to learn another language. Didn't find that that simple or intuitive at all to use at first.

And I know my PC will play all my legacy games like Neverwinter Nights 1&2/Skyrim/Oblivion, etc. Can these Mac's do that? Also all software that I need to use is available in the Windows world. Still don't know if that's the case with Mac's.

Each platform has their plus/minuses. I don't think I will ever fully get out of the PC/Windows universe.

Almost everything they say isn't really unique to Mac, compared with Windows or even some Linux distros.

"Easy to learn"... on par with Windows
"Astoundingly powerful"... again, not unique to Mac and purely marketing buzzwords
"designed to let you work, play, and create in ways you never imagined"... more buzzwords. You can work, play, and create on Mac, Windows, or Linux... I'd say 'work' and 'play' might be better supported by Windows, while 'create' is a toss-up
"comes packed with apps that are ready to go right out of the box"... okay, but so do Windows and Linux, and on all platforms, most of what you want needs to be installed
"Free, regular software updates keep things up to date and running smoothly"... again, all three do this, and I'd say of them all, macOS breaks your software the most frequently, sadly.
Windows is not that easy to learn. Just because people are used to it (from school or work) doesn’t mean it’s easy for new users. I’d argue neither is macOS, but the closer Apple made the UI to be similar to iOS, the easier imo it would be since many more people nowadays get familiar with mobile first. Unfortunately for Microsoft, the lost the mobile OS war.

As for powerful, it’s undeniable. The base M1 Mac can already go head to head or faster than a core i7, a high end CPU. Most PCs out there are the i3 or i5. Whether you need the power or not is a different story, but imagine a base config iMac computer that can handle hevc 10 bit videos with ease, while even the best intel PCs are choking. For amateur video editors, Apple silicon is a huge deal.

Comes with apps, yes, this is mac’s strength. There’s Preview, which is a powerful PDF editor. To edit PDF on Windows, you have to either buy Adobe Acrobat (not the free version) or find another 3rd party app. And there’s no parity of macOS Photo and iMovie on Windows in terms of software quality with the ones that come with Windows. Also, with many Windows machines, HEIC support is not included, you have to buy it from the Windows store. (There’s workarounds, but normal people wouldn’t know)

MacOS major weakness is not the free software updates, but the software support longevity. This is the big advantage of Windows. Eg. I have a 2012 Mac mini. It’s already dropped by Apple with Big Sur. Meanwhile, Windows 10 can still run fine on way older computers and intel Macs. In fact, many old intel Macs’ lives can be extended with Windows (the irony :D).

So Macs are great, but with shorter OS lifespan than Windows. This is also why Enterprises are still mostly Windows.

You don't have to. There's nothing wrong to use both. I also have a Windows Desktop PC and MacBook. Macs are strong in the portable Area. The desktops... nah. Windows desktops are superior for my use case. And more upgradeable. I often upgraded my desktop PC because I needed more storage, RAM or a new GPU to play the latest games on high quality.

Why not get the best out of everything?

I'm not feeling the love from Apple.

Why buy a Mac? Well... It's a closed box. Um... It has a builtin monitor. Um... You can't upgrade it. You only have a couple of ports on it. Um... It's self-contained... Hmm... 'Why buy a Mac?'

It comes in new colors? Huh... Best I got. I mean, it is fun to use, at times. Fairly, SO FAR, resistant to viruses and malware. It has that going for it, which isn't a small thing actually.

I'm not saying I'm sorry for buying a Mac. I was sorry for buying my IIcx, but let's not split hairs.

Just 'buy big'. They hope more people do that too, I'm sure... Buy big, because if you need to 'enhance', you are facing a brick wall. With almost ALL of their products, with the iPhones, iPads, (and Mini's) being the most closed.
Come on, Pinky
That is not the kind of Apple talk we expect to see here on MR. ;). You sound like a woman set in her ways. You gotta buy for what you need today. And if your needs drastically change in a few years, you hope the current machine can handle. Otherwise, its back to buying another Mac.

We have all seen the writing on the wall for many years with the move to soldering. The days of computers like the 2011 MBP self upgrade are over.

Time to get with the program, Pinky.

A Mac is fun to use all of the time, unless it is being used to pay taxes. :p

The 5C was an excellent design. Simply the best iPhone for caseless use. Solid, thin, non-slip. Unapologetically plastic.

My old 2010.5 iMac’s last duty for me was paying a giant check to the fed treasury.😫

The 2021 24” iMac is a breath of fresh air. Apple’s integrated approach is exactly what engineers have been envisioning for decades. The result is impressive. We are finally free of limitations based on an ancient architecture.

I like the new look. It is fun to change things up every now and then. I agree with you. I hope the new MBA looks like what is rumored to be coming.
