I think the difference is that Tech companies build these out with the intention of people never having to go home. They have food options, doctors office, gyms, sleeping areas, hair salons, dog daycare, dry cleaning and everything else you'd ever need. Just work all day 24/7!
[doublepost=1526494417][/doublepost]I am surprised they aren't just building out their Austin location more, its grown a lot over the past few years.

At my son-in-law’s tech offices, they have a slightly official job title “Momma”. She assures food and beverage. also showers and occasional-sleeping quarters provided for young programmers.

daughter’s former employer had all the goodies but she never mentioned a second “Momma.”

i dont think one company, even Apple, could make a difference.

during the great recession i wanted to move to Denver Colorado. Took a few years but I make it happen. This year my property tax doubled $$. Not so much as the tax rate changed but the value of the property doubled.

All things both good and bad.

The poor taxpayers of NC or VA are about to get ripped off. The free market isn’t handing out money to wealthy corporations collected from hard working regular folks.

Being a southern state it is funny that NC gets ridiculed about this for being on the side of science, specifically biology.

Actually, what the biology tells is that is that males and females aren't as cut and dry as we thought. But I digress. Companies have shown that voting the previous governor out and re-negotatiating the bathroom law was enough for them to come back to NC. NC moves forward from there... (Also , power and tech offices/labs are cheaper in NC relative to many other US locations, which is the appeal for NC, along with a technical workforce already being in place.)

Please no. And no to Amazon as well.

We don't have the roads to handle the insane amount of traffic with the (too many) people we already have. It's not unusual to have a commute of well over and hour to drive 8 miles. I really don't think people that don't live here have any idea of what a nightmare it is to get anywhere. It's taken me close to 3 hours to get to a concert venue that is 40 minutes away. At 3pm.

Please don't come here.

You mean NOVA. It's a **** show.

Traffic in VA 10x's better than NOVA, DC, MD, NYC, LA and any other major city. Problem is NOVA! Let's not group that area into the WHOLE of VA. Lol
It's not accurate, but yeah, whenver you say something like NY, people just assume New York City. Ditto with CA... it's gotta be LA, SF, SD, or Silicon Valley, and not the other areas.

That said, I'm surprised they're considering NoVA. Traffic is lousy, and I don't know what good it does to compete with such resources with the IT government contract folks in town.

There was nothing scientific about North Carolina’s bigoted laws.

What does this even mean? Are you referring to the stupid bathroom bill which was quickly repealed once NC course-corrected by voting out Pat McCroy? Maybe you're thinking of the gerrymandering... something not exclusive to NC and something that is being corrected as well.

NC is one of the more progressive states - look up the Research Triangle Park. It hosts IBM, Cisco, NetApp, GlaxoSmithKline, Quintiles, Lenovo, the EPA center for air pollution. Red Hat is headquartered in Raleigh. SAS is headquartered in Cary and John Deere Agriculture & Turf is located there as well. GE Aviation final assembly is in Durham. Epic games is headquartered in Cary. Let's not forget the 130+ colleges and universities like Duke, A&T, UNC, Central, NC State... just to name a few.

Apple would fit in quite well.

Sure, NC has the backwoods, backwards thinking areas just like every other state but the vast majority of the state's population supports forward thinking. It's less bigoted than people who think the whole state is based on a couple of failed laws.

Apple tries to hire all kinds of people, whether they are deaf, blind, LGBTQ, etc. Neither Virginia nor North Carolina are friendly towards any of those groups.

Have you stepped out of Boston to visit NC or VA? This is the most absurd comment.

NC? I'll be happy to switch to a non-Apple phone.
Some of them work quite well.

Why?

I don't know much about Vthese two locations regulations and employment standards. How do they compare to other states? why these two places vs NY or Georgia (or so many numerous other places)

Just curious, I've got almost no opinion of the matter other than "interesting"

Check out the Research Triangle Park. https://www.rtp.org

The location details in your profile cracked me up.

And come on, it can’t be that bad? Not worse than Delaware?
Oh yeah well my life is a living hell and I hate it, it really does suck

I’m not sure about Delaware, but I feel like everyone is talking about how CA, TX, NY, IL and how they’re having fun and to me it’s boring here

Not to drag on too long off topic.
Thats not really a living hell. Boredom is a state of mind, not the state you live in.

Why not Detroit, in an area with high unemployment?

Sure, I know the skill pool may be lower there, but you gotta start somewhere.

I hate it when I saw Tim Cook's argument that Apple manufactures in China, not because it is cheaper, but because of the skill pool of manufacturing engineers there. It's a chicken and egg argument. China only got that way with the skill pool because companies like Apple shifted all their manufacturing there.

So if Apple shifts all the manufacturing back, it will take a similar few decades to build up the U.S. skill pool again, but it needs to catalyst to start.

That is why Tim Cook's arguments were disingenuous.

Thanks for telling me how my life is going, you’re right

When did I say living hell was connected to the state I reside in?
