Well, following this approach we would still be living in caves...

Not really.

Wireless charging is currently a step backwards from what we already have, it's slower, less efficient, less convenient and more expensive - so it's more like going from living in a cave back to living in trees again.

If they can make it so the phone will charge if it is within, lets say 1 foot of the base station, I think that would be awesome. I could just put my phone on the nightstand/desk and have it charge automatically. This way I don't forget to charge it ever again.
I've used an Android phone with built in wireless charging (Fujitsu ARROWS X F-10D) for a couple of days and while it's nice not to have to plug the charger in, there's a couple of issues with this technology which makes it not worth the trouble.

First, you need to carry the wireless charging pad and its power supply around instead of just a small USB cable. Secondly, the phone needs to be lying flat on the charger to charge, which means that you can't use it to make calls or take pictures while charging. Third, it takes more time to charge than regular wired charging.
Unless Apple is able to solve these problems, wireless charging is nothing more than a useless gimmick.

The whole point of wireless charging for Apple would be to get rid of the opening in the case. If they were planning that, why would they just have introduced Lightning a few months ago?

Dont really see the advantage of this.

As someone with an inductive charger for various game consoles and electronics - yeah I want this. It's much easier to just drop it on a pad than it is to put a wire in (less contact is always better for wear and tear). We're hopefully heading into a future where everything is charged "wirelessly".

Why on earth does anyone care about wireless charging?

Because it's so much easier if you have several devices. I own an iPhone, iPad, iPad mini, iPod touch, iPod nano (plus a few Macs). That's 5 devices with 5 cables and 5 plugs. I've got a little table just to plug them all in every night. It looks such a mess with all the cables.

If all the iOS devices had wireless charging Apple could make a wirless charging mat to go with them. So you just have 1 cable plugged into the wall and you simply place your devices on the mat. No plugging and unplugging. No ugly mess of cables.

That's why I want it.

I'd welcome this, mainly as lightning cables are total **** and are very likely to break.

You realise that so-called "wireless" charging requires a charging plate where you deposit your phone, which is connected to a wall plug via a cable? And that cable has _wires_ so it isn't wireless at all?

Soon you'll get wireless charging and NFC. Both have Apple dismissed interest in, yet both will arrive, about 2-3 years after the competition. With proprietary technology, of course.
The difference between wireless charging and NFC is that the latter is a mature technology which is a real improvement over what existed before.

Really? Had mine since October and use it daily! It's absolutely as new! While with the other version i always had problems after few months of use, where the wire is connected to the 30 pin it would start tearing off. I seriously never understood the complains about the lightning. I do understand the frustration of the ones who are using accessories with 30 pin integration but what do you expect? Neverending unchanged technology/design?

Apple's standard approach,

- Deny that they are interested in any feature the mainstream competitors already use.
- A year later, introduce the same feature, and call it revolutionary.

For example, you saw this with the screen size. Soon you'll get wireless charging and NFC. Both have Apple dismissed interest in, yet both will arrive, about 2-3 years after the competition. With proprietary technology, of course.

Except when it's the other way around, as with Siri, the retina display, iTunes Match, or, oh yeah, the whole modern smartphone and tablet industry...

For example, you saw this with the screen size.
When did Apple call the iPhone 5's screen "revolutionary"? They clearly increased the screen size due to market pressures, but they explained their choice by saying they'd found a good solution - make the screen larger but keep the width the same so you can still easily hold it in one hand. The word "revolutionary" was never used

no idea, but Nokia seemed good about it with the Luna....

Its true, anything you have to plug in and or connect devices to accomplish, to me, is anything BUT wireless charging.

Maybe companies just have forgotten a cable is a direct connection to a pillow, or adapter.

Basically, this would mean you'd still to pull out a cable of some sort anyway....

Unless Apple could put this in the phone (etc... a switch you'd flick on in Settings, plug in an external adapter, and thats it ... No cable. )

this won't change my mind.

Yes and they will insist they invented it. Nokia might have just popularized inductive charging with their full array of accessories. I hate how Apple shows no respect to one of the "founding fathers" of the cell phone industry.

Nokia is planning a car charging dock that will allow the phone to be in full use. They already have a table dock that allows the same thing.

its fun to see Nokia users take in on this .. :) I wonder if they'll even find out the "real" truth before the next release.

I share your thoughts on this even though I was a bit sarcastic of course. But almost every newly developed technology started at a merely lower level and improved to ulimately satisfy needs - if it was introduced though.

I like the idea but it still relies on the user to put the phone on the charging point, now if that's in the place where you normally put your phone over night it will work. Along with wireless sync this could be a big bonus and free up the leads on your computer, one less USB port needed.

This would be a nice addition to the 5s but I don't see it happening until the iPhone 6 and a possible redesign.

ETA - yes I see the down side in slower charging and you can't use the phone while charging but I'm sure they will still keep the USB lead as a backup. Maybe wireless charging will be an option at first, if you want to buy the charging point?

My phone runs all night on my bed because it serves as a sensory alarm clock. So unless this has a range, it's gonna be pretty useless for me.

So many times my battery was drained at the end of the day, even though I had an extra charger in my office... Yes, it is slower, less effective but if I can get out of work charged enough to last through evening then this is a great idea!

However I think Apple will make the charging built-in, without the need for a special case, cause there is no way I am slappping a cover on my beautiful phone. I hate iphone covers more than anything, really...

If one day they develop wireless charging like WIFI, that would be superb. Imagine the phone being charged at different hotspots while on the move, we won't need a longer battery life anymore.

True - but it's got a helluva way to go yet. Wi-Fi has been around for donkeys years and it's only just now becoming a viable alternative to wired.

But we have to start somewhere to get to where we want to be. Imagine installing a wireless charger into your house which transmits energy universally to all your battery powered devices, so you literally don't have to plug in any more of your iPods, laptops, phones, cameras, etc etc to charge up; it all happens wirelessly from one point. The basics have to be explored first.

I wonder how much Mac Rumours are getting paid to advertise the App stories? Its a classic case of adverts presented as news! Do you think we are thick?
