In France, yes. In the UK, however, O2 is the provider. And in Germany it's yet another again: T-Mobile. For a slew of other contries (to be added in 2008, as rumoured) Vodafone might be the provider. That would be great, since Vodafone is by far the best provider around. Not the cheapest, but overall, it's definitely the best. (It might even be the biggest, globally. Is it, anyone?) Also, why aren't they operating in the US?

never seen vodaphone out side of england, its rare in scotland. and never seen it in thailand, china or japan, nor in main land europe. i have however seen orange everyware.

I really don't understand Apple's European strategy for the iPhone contracts. O2 in the UK, T-Mobile in Germany and Orange in France... wtf? Unless I'm very much mistaken all those networks are resident in all those countries.

Why offer it to all networks yet limit each network's availability to a particular country? They would make shedloads more revenue by opening up the iPhone to all those networks in all those countries... It's very confusing for a company not to want to sell as many units of a flagship product as possible.

Apple wouldn't lock the iPod to only play songs performed in English...

Apple just created a virtual provider in any of the remaining european countries that will just distribute the iPhone. This way the price structure will be the same in every part of europe and there will be no roaming fees for voice and data. The management of the virtual provider is done by the 3 companies holding the current contracts.
Apple is going to finally unite europe ;)

And then I woke up.. Such a nice dream ;)

I get the feeling Apple simply went with who would give them most revenue from the iPhone, not necessarily the best provider for that region...

Apple MUST have had some inside knowledge from Apple UK as to which providers carry most cache in this country etc... This is the 1st time I think Apple might have done something not directly with the users interest in mind - the iPhone itself has interaction, elegance and real human 'beauty' about it in droves (as do most things 'Apple') - but the business end of things, i.e - the tariffs and carrier - are just plain awful...

1. They are.

Vodafone Group Plc is a mobile network operator headquartered in Newbury, Berkshire, England, UK. It is the largest mobile telecommunications network company in the world by turnover and has a market value of about £84.7 billion (July 2007). Vodafone currently has equity interests in 27 countries and Partner Networks (networks in which it has no equity stake) in a further 40 countries.

They own like 50% of Verizon Wireless. So yeah they are in the states.

Not to pile on or anything, but as far as I can tell they also have the only Europe-wide tariff available, "Now."

However, I'm putting my nickel on T-Mobile for most of the rest of Europe.

Apple, Apple Canada and their educational equivalents are down - any relation to Expo Paris? New products, or just periodic maintenance?

Yep, they are all down...which means in a few hours Steve-O will make a major annoucment @Paris Expo (btw, the real connoisseurs know that a select few Asian babes, just like the Armani design Samsung cell phone, are the hotest by far...w00t, Lee Hyo-ri, Jeon Ji-Hyun to name a few :D...French...eh, all they have is Romaneé Conti, bleh); Leopard ships Oct 1!!! lol. :p

Uk store still isn't down :(

The only thing Ive seen added on the UK page, is under the page where you can configure your mac, there is a new box (well new to me) which shows most common configs.

I've stated time and time again, the Apple Expo in Paris is a non-event. Sites like Mac Rumors pointlessly hype it up to only cause people to get pissed and moan when the event comes and goes with nothing.

You were right to state time and again, but actually MR has done very little to hype this event.

It's peoples' stupid, baseless expectations that have hyped it up. Despite the fact that for every other event - "special" or scheduled - there's at least a week's (if not more) lead time on a keynote announcement, and despite the fact that NOTHING has been released at Paris for three years, people were still hoping for the most ridiculous things.

You were applying logic to the possibilities of announcements, it seems the masses do/did not. Or being generous they clung on to the very last vestiges of hope that something might happen.

Why are people complaining about Apple having nothing to show here?

We had WWDC in June
A special event in August for iMacs/iLife/iWork
A special event in September for iPod touch, nano, classic

Take a look at the Vodafone home page. That pull down menu shows all the countries they operate in. I've a feeling they may even be the biggest mobile provider on the planet now.

With a 15 month old flagship model that has neither been improved or reduced in price you can't be too harsh on people hoping.:)
