Is it really that likely that we'll be seeing updated PowerBooks at WWDC in June? I'm thinking about buying one soon, but this is really making me wonder.
Yep, you should definitely wait, a friend of mine has a friend who works in the warehouse of an Apple reseller here in NZ and he says that these things are *sitting on the pallet out back*, they just can't put them on shelves until June. These are full noise 2GHz CF (carbon fibre) G5 PBs with HD screens and apparently ship with 1GHz RAM by default to encourage Linux weenies to defect. Also Weta Digital are already using a bunch of these rack mounted as a render farm for King Kong because they aren't allowed to take them out of the building in case someone sees them, I should know, I live in Wellington.

Wow.. do you happen to know the the 12" models will get an upgrade too? :D

Yep. Perfect in time for a new redesigned Powerbook. Could it be because of Apple´s timetable that it´s taking place a couple of weeks later? Maybe, maybe not...

For me, that will be the worst time. I will be going to college in August, and will be needing a powerbook by then.

Please apple, think of the college kids. :)

NAB: April:
FCE HD
DVD SP
Shake
Motion

Standalone announcement: April/May
Tiger

WWDC: June
PowerBook updates
iBook updates

Macworld Paris: September
5G iPod, with some kind of BT or wireless (all color)
iMac HD
Mac mini HD (some sort of media center)

MacWorld SF: January
PowerMac (next generation chip)
iPod mini (all color)
iLife '06
iWork '06 (adding some new app)

Interesting.

I would like HD iMacs at NAB given their focus.

I hope iLife gets a new app as well. Soemthing like DeliciousMonster which uses more than just Amazon, and has country specific stuff, would really rock. I hope Apple buy them out and rebuild the technology. That would be well worth the upgrade.

Your friend has a friend? Wow, that sounds really reliable.

Powerbooks will be updated in Paris, even if its just a new case. i can imagine it being quite big; 2Ghz minimum (maybe dual core?), at least 1Gb ram, new ports etc... put the power back into powerbook i say.

maybe Tiger will be released in Paris too? god knows its elusive enough.

i'm with you supafly, but i'm doubting it and not holding my breath.

You know, it's the nay-sayers that I find most interesting these days. I was one of the ones that went out on a limb and said that I thought it was possible that the G5 would be released in PowerBooks and Power Macs side by side. (Please note, I never said that I thought it definitely would be, I just thought it was possible). At the time, the nay-sayers pointed to the G4 and said that it took almost two years to go from desktop to laptop. Now, here we are, just about two years since the release of the G5 Power Mac, and the nay-sayers are still saying it's not going to happen. We have the 970FX, which is much cooler than the 970, and we've seen hints that the 970GX already exists (though they've been denied). So, is it just a matter of the nay-sayers saying that there won't be a G5 PB until Apple announces one, or what?

Date set for educational movie store ...

Actually the 30" G5 TabletMac Video iPod PDA acts as a remote for the iHome (which accepts video streams from Airport Express Extreme which supports AirVideo from the new iClips Movie Store)

On October 3 Apple will unveil the educational version of "iClips", dubbed "eClips". It will sell historical documentaries and offer free downloads of 1950's PSAs to help us all in case of nuclear attack.

October 3, 2005. Mark the date. So says my source at NASA.

I think Paris is when Tiger is being released.

Think about it, it totally makes sense.

And of course, Paul Thurott will still describe the release as rushed and buggy and a direct copy of Longhorn.

That's already "enough said," but if you need more data to support it, read the other 900 threads about Tiger being released this month. ;)

Lol there's a LOT of inaccurate weird random speculation on this thread... I think I read "i've not heard much on the G6 but..." as well as "tiger in paris"... Paris is SEPTEMBER... that's 2H 2005, Tiger is 1H 2005!!

I'm annoyed it's so late in september - my academic term normally starts around the 17th...

not too far from it's original purpose, but with some added goodies...like a PVR (Mini-Media)
What the heck are you guys on about? Why would we get a mini in HD? we dont even have $2000 powerbooks in HD yet and you think a $500 mini will have HD? next
PVR built into the minis. i know apple has put tv tuners in computers before but it was a big mistake and theyve learned from it. only a small percentage of home offices even have a TV jack nearby, let alone have users that want to watch tv on their computer. (fyi: i have an eyetv and i love it). anyway, jobs has said in a bunch of interviews and speeches that the tv and computer will not meet because theyre opposites (computer turns your brain on, tv turns it off, etc). and finally, have you ever seen a lower end apple product get a feature that the higher end doesnt have? why would they put PVR in the mini if the imac doesnt have it? like putting a color screen on the ipod mini but not the ipod.

thats my rant

IF there's going to be a media center Mac, the Mac mini seems to be the obvious choice. It has the most cross-appeal with Windows users and an entry-level price point. There's no display. A Mac mini -- or pretty much ANY recent computer -- is technically capable of acting as a DVR. It's a question of marketing, i.e., whether Apple wants to go the media center direction.

say 20% of the market wants a media center. if wintel has 90% of the market, and they make a media center, thats 18% of the total market that a wintel based media center will hit. if apple has 3% (being generous), thats .6% of the total market that theyre aiming at.
now im no business major, but i think thats not a wise venture. leave it up to eyetv and those good open source boys at centerstageproject.com

Ummmm ... why would 90% control over mostly-corporate desktops translate to Media Center sales domination?

What would Tivo be going after, 0%? It has no PC market at all!

Media Center is not the same thing as "PC with a video in". Media Center, as a concept, is far more about a small set of tasks (video recording, searching, cataloguing; photo capture and display; music playing, recording, etc; perhaps even basic internet tasks if you are a real masochist). Desktop dominance does not, by and large, equate to media center dominance. The ONLY case where desktop dominance gets MC buy-in is in gaming. Which is a big deal, of course, but if you're going to be gaming on the low res HDTV screen, you might as well do it with a PS2 or such ...

Apple could create a real killer media center, and take the market by storm, just based on the value of their iLife software. Problem is, how much of a market is there for them to take? Can Apple grow it by providing something more than a PC with a 10-foot interface option?

Different markets, so these numbers don't really work.

To calculate this nascent market, it would be expected buyers and what would be your fair share, high and low penetrations.

With that said, this is one area I really hope open source cracks. The cable and media companies are killing the Tivo's of the world with asinine restrictions.

ok so what youre all saying now is that its not going to be a mac mini at all, that its completely unrelated to the mac mini apart from the logo on top. if that is the case, sure apple could pull it off, break into a new market (ipod), its not like they haven't done it before (iTMS). but as for a media center dumped on top of a computer, apart from being a bad idea, it does bring in the factor of brand (or OS) loyalty, and in that case, apple would loose. am i wrong?

Hmmm

I have a VERY hard time believing all that. Guess we will have to wait and see.

I think the Powerbook G5 is a good bet but if not then by January 2006. However, I think a lot of things regarding High Definition will come into play or be emphasized. That is the timeframe that blue laser players etc should be hitting the U.S. market and I would like Apple to be at the front of it.

Time will tell

I'm not sure what you mean by HD, but I assume it means High Definition. Again, I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the Powerbook not having it. The only things Powerbooks are waiting for is a G5 processor, not the ability to display HD. All Apple computers can work with HD content and the Mini doesn't come with a display, so all it would need is a graphics card capable of displaying it; the card is comes with already supports DVI so it's not impossible they could put a PVR combo card that could handle HD; that's really not needed in a Powerbook. What we're suggesting is that the Mini platform could be expanded into a variation on a theme; rather than a replacement computer, a small PVR device for recording TV shows and, since it doesn't have room for a larges hard drive, a special Mini RAID device that only does storage.

Consider Apple's other product lines. There is a Pro line and then there is a home/personal line up. You have a Pro app and an Express app. You have the Powerbook and the iBook, the Powermac and the iMac, ect. So, on the pro side we have the Xserve and Xraid, why not a Mini media server and Mini RAID? It seems logical to me and would be consistant with how Apple has expanded and defined their other product lines. I believe they will "evolve" the Mini and expand it into other functional areas; and the fact that others are suggesting the same thing makes it even more plausible; because if we are thinking it, Apple engineers are thinking it too. Jobs never said there wouldn't be a media appliance or PVR, only that this wasn't the right time. So your comment about they tried that before is irrelevant. Times change and so do people's wants and needs. As far as TV goes, the key is to get the media from your TV satalite/cable box to a hard drive where your Apple comptuer can work with it...easily and simply.

I think a joint venture might be in the works with Sony. I heard the overtures of that in SJ's comments at the keynote; whether Sony wants to play ball or not is another matter, so it might not happen, but it would make sense. Perhaps the gaming or graphics job posts could be to write Mac games that would work on the PS3, which will be running the cell chip, a chip Apple may use in their computers, ect. You could see how this might go. The new console gaming platforms may be the product of choice for consumers who want a convergence device for the living room. A stategic partnership with Sony makes the most sense to go against M$. Perhaps Apple would agree to licesnse their DRM to Sony to work with the Walkman? Or even more tantalizing, a Sony branded iMac. Sony has a music division too and could become a more aggressive competitor. But, sony also has the VIAO computer line they are vainly marketing with their video cameras, TVs, digitial cameras, and cell phones; all which are used and could benefit from Apple's software prowess. Maybe as sales of iPods become less important and the sales of iTunes music store becomes more important to Apple's bottom line these kinds of strategic partnerships might begin to happen. Time will tell.
