I just received the replacement unit, but still deciding if I will keep my own phone and live with the problems, or accept the replacement unit. I didn't open it yet, so I don't know if the model number will start with N or F. For sure it won't start with M.

If it was you, would you rather live with your phone that is having problem, or accept a replacement unit?
I’d open the box and compare the two and keep the one I like.

LIkely would start with N if it's a warranty replacement.

For me, I would rather NOT live with the phone that is having issues and I'll take the replacement unit any day.

Well it appears to be the silver model so it's easy to polish those out.
One looks gold one blue.
So many micro-scratches 😶
Indeed, launch day phone.
I don’t like using cases, and the silver on both my watch & phone gets scuffed quite easy.
New Phone feels real nice, warranty support and apple care are lovely. I don’t bother with polishing, prefer replacements instead.
Not too expensive.

I have had express replacements on an iPhone X, an iPad Pro 11 (2018) and both replacement units have been like new. They were both N Model Numbers and I could not tell the difference between them and a brand new unit. I wouldn't keep a defective unit and would not hesitate to keep the replacement device. My experience with express replacement is one reason I keep AppleCare on my devices.

I'm leaning towards keeping the replacement unit.

I noticed one user mentioned "serial-D." I'm curious about this.

I was going to subscribe to the AppleCare, but I forgot until it expired, so I guess its too late for me.

Model number and Serial number are not the same. AFAIK. Usually the 12 and 12 Pros usually come with a serial number starting with either F1,FK or DN Where as the Pro max will either F2, G6 or G0. I have yet to see the Pro max's that would start what a DN, but so far have not.

I would open the replacement phone and see if that resolves my problem. If it does, keep the phone. If it doesn't, call Apple and troubleshoot some more.

The outer packaging (shipping box) was sealed. The inner white box holding the iPhone contains 3 seals. A seal with the P/N and S/N on the front end was intact. The other end (bottom end) have 1 seal with the P/N, S/N, EID, IMEIs is broken. Also on the bottom end of the box contains an "inspected" seal which was also broken. The little tab from the front glass protector was sandwiched between the box and cover, instead of properly tucked under the phone inside the tray.

On hold with an Apple support.

OK, their explanation for the broken seals is that they had to inspect and make sure the replacement is working before shipping it to me.

I was also told that the new device comes with 1 year of warranty. I've only had the iPhone 12 for 99 days as of today. If I exchanged it for the replacement, it only comes with 90 days of warranty. That means I lost approx 6 months of warranty.

Since I missed the deadline to purchase the AppleCare+, I am ineligible to purchase it now.

I know you’re not me, but cut your losses and enjoy the phone until the next one comes out. Then we’ll back here discussing more banter together 😘

I thought the 90 days is if you receive a replacement device when you're original one was out of warranty....

Regardless, just enjoy the phone and don't stress on the serial numbers ;)
