Silicon Alley Insider reports that a "plugged-in source in the mobile industry" has indicated that Apple is building some form of Facebook integration into iPhone OS, with a possible introduction next month at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference.
Our source tells us that Apple is at least going to build Facebook contact syncing directly into the iPhone software, so you can pull Facebook contacts into your iPhone's phonebook. This is a no-brainer, and is already a feature that some of Apple's competition offers, so it makes sense to include on the iPhone.
Other possibilities include syncing of Facebook photos, Facebook Connect integration, and perhaps Facebook messaging.

Apple has added support for minor Facebook integration to several of its products, including photo uploads in iPhoto '09 and information sharing in iTunes 9. Apple has also been rumored to be adding more Facebook integration in iTunes by deploying Facebook Connect, which would increase possibilities for social aspects of the platform.

Love that feature on the Palm Pre; but like MMS, that feature was available since the Pre's inception. So, it's bittersweet to know Apple is catching up.

thecartoonguy, I was just thinking that yesterday. Arn, where are all of the "Mac" rumors? Not your fault, but it's iphone/flash overload lately.

Sigh.... Does Apple make computers any longer? Or am I the only one who is growing tired of the iPhone?

Can I remove facebook. Link my twitter or something. I don't even remember the last time I signed into facebook.

This could be cool as long as it's

a.) optional for those who want to disable all facebook connectivity
b.) used where it makes sense, and not just plug everything into facebook.

I'm not sure if I would use it or not, as I like Facebook but I also like to keep it well controlled.

I hate this Steve

Open Web Open Graph what a bunch of bunk. You guys will all be Zucked in the near future if not already. I would rather give all my information to Google and than share anything and everything with Mark and his out of control web dominance plans.

has Jobs not sniffed the wind?

the zeitgeist is to run a mile from faecebook as moriarty zuckerberg sells privacy porn... and apple wants to *further* integrate with faecebook? time to take a stand. oops. forgot. this is apple, they already went to the dark side last year.

I vote no way!!!! I resist all things Facef@ck, Twitter, and Flickr, and resent Apple telling me that some 3rd party garbage that stupid people (sheep) all over the planet feel the need to proliferate because they can't think for themselves needs to be part of the core OS or have designated buttons in any of my desktop apps.

They just released new MacBook Pros. You should check them out.

Also, if you read their SEC filings, you will be pleased to hear that Apple makes oodles of money selling computers. I'm talking LOTS of money. I'm a shareholder myself. You should also check this out.

Apple hates flash and wont let you have it... but they want to put the privacy lacking Facebook right on their phone for you.

Apple is really going downhill.

Is it just me or is everyone else feeling Facebooked out? Considering the average attention span, I'm surprised we haven't moved passed it yet.

Wow, what a bunch of haters! How does this affect you if you don't use Facebook? Please, tell me. I want to know why you're so incredibly dense you can't see that this can only be a good thing for those who use Facebook, and will never even need to enter the minds of those who don't.

I personally like this idea quite a bit. I would love to have my Facebook contacts synced (with available phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses if possible) to my computer, and this may give me a two-step process at least. If it works well, I'll be quite happy.

Eventually Facebook will have it's own OS. All your "friends" will know every webpage you visit during the course of the day.
The next step after that will be to integrate the webcam so that people can see what you're doing 24 hours per day.
On the iPhone the GPS will enable all your friends to know where you are 'round the clock.
Yay for more Facebook!

It depends on the level of integration. If there is something in settings that very explicitly turns facebook integration on and off, most people could live with it.

If it's ubiquitous facebook integration like what has happened to the front page of cnn.com and other things where you can't tell if it's interacting with facebook, it is a huge problem and something that would make me reconsider the entire OS.

Apple are just playing catchup now. The integration of facebook, twitter etc in android blows the iphone os out the water.

Ugh, Facebook. It's okay popular douches have to have an excuse for being egocentric, but I don't need, like, or want Facebook anywhere in my life.

If it wasn't for Facebook, I would have not met my brother. So while you may not want/use social networking. There are millions of people that use it everyday. It makes sense to make it part of the OS on a phone. And like other things, I am suse there will be a turn off button, but if you don't have an account with them, there is nothing to integrate.
