Apple Extends iPod Touch Trademark to Include Gaming Devices

I would love to see apple focusing on gaming. An Apple TV with the power of the A12x can challenge every other console. Not necessarily as string in graphics, but the combination and size would offer a good alternative for people not focused on high end gaming. An iPod could be a perfect hand held companion to a console.

Hopefully they're keeping this thing around. I remember it being a great introduction into the iOS ecosystem when I was a kid, and using the iPod as a game console evokes a sense of nostalgia.

In fact, after learning that Epic was removing the Infinity Blade trilogy, I dug out my old 3rd generation iPod and synced massively out-of-date apps to it from the old family PC. It now serves as a shrine to gaming on the App Store circa 2008:
LOVED me some trainyard.

That was the first game I alllowed my son to play on an iOS device. He didn’t want anything to do with any other game for a long while.

Hmmm, let's see, how can we re-purpose all of this crap we have left over when people didn't buy the iPhone..?

I know, we will leave out the phone stuff and resurrect the iPod touch.

Splendid...splendid.....
We will make it.
And we will call it fancy.

Apple is going to acquire Nintendo.
I'm not sure Japan would be happy with losing one of their most universally recognized symbols of success right before the 2020 Olympics.

Plus, while I love the Nintendo Switch, and think it's a very well designed console, I'm not sure what the purchase would bring to Apple. If Apple is fully embracing USB-C, then making the iPad Mini 5 and iPod Touch game centric devices, combined with the 4K Apple TV and their own gaming devices and Beats branded gaming headset? That's a very strong and competitive gaming ecosystem.

I do miss skeuphormism...

Very tough to compete with the Nintendo Switch which has better development and games selection. On the premium end there's the upcoming SMach Z for running PC Steam AAA games which is the ultimate.

"so it's unclear why Apple has waited until now to extend its trademark coverage to include the area."

faster processor? eg.. iPod touch can now more easily be merged into the same gaming category as the rest thanks to better specs? iPod could play games before, but if you really wanted a lead, buy the later iPhone's but now perhaps that 'difference' is decreasing?

I think Apple could have a hit gaming device if they did what would be necessary for it. But I just don’t think they’ll make the changes to make it a true replacement to say the switch or even DS type consoles. They’d need to, primarily, figure out something more than solely touch based controls. They’d also need to partner with game makers to ensure they have a large library of games that people enjoy elsewhere too. Nintendo sells consoles with their first party games, Sony and Microsoft sell them with their hardware and obvious library of games that will be made for them. Apple doesn’t have their own games, Apple doesn’t have true gaming hardware, Apple doesn’t have all the standard games, so they’d really need to do something to make a splash.

With that being said, if they wanted to keep a small screen device I think it may just make more sense to do a device the XR size, call it iPad nano and call it a day. I get wanting to hold onto the iPod name, but even if they focused on gaming the name doesn’t sell that to me. At least with iPad they could market the games they would hopefully be getting on the devices as playable on iPad, choose your size. Idk just a thought. I would hate to see the touch outright die. I never owned one myself, jumping on the iPhone from the beginning. But it’s had a place in a lot of people’s lives, I still think it could if they do it right.

I can't find the source, but some one did these a few days ago. And there was even one without the FaceID, front camera and using only Passcode for auth.

I would love to have one for gaming. Even the Max is just a tad too small. ( Constantly pressing the wrong button )
iPad Mini Screen Ratio isn't that good for gaming. And before people said 7" are creeping into iPad size, the have different aspect ratio. A 7" iPod touch only has 60% of an 7.9" iPad mini Screen area.

Give it the right specs, the right price and none of the latest Apple c..p and this will be a HUGE hit. It could be for gaming what the original iPod was for music!

I really think that this is a product that could revolutionize portable gaming if done right! Now if only I could talk to Ive and pals, i could have few suggestions.... but unfortunatly there's no way to talk to them D

my first thought when I read this plus the rumours about a new iPod touch was that Apple might be impressed by the success of the Nintendo switch and might try to go in a similar direction with the new touch, maybe in combination with a new Apple TV or even Macs ...

I find these good for listening to music whilst exercising, saves taking a big, expensive plus sized iPhone with you and risk breaking or losing it, or getting it all sweaty or dirty. The 6th gen is still more than adequate for this but I’d probably buy one just for a fresh battery (particularly if they could eke a little more runtime out of it). If they can find a niche like gaming for it to occupy to help secure the line in the future then all the better

It is possible to use Apple iPod Touch to interact with Apple TV so user can play games on their TV?

Or is this old news?
Yes:

I have a 5th gen i use at work all night to listen to podcasts;
it's only on iOS9, so some games are slow/buggy,
but everyone complained about the short battery life on the A8 powered 6th gen,
but i was thinking about getting 2 6th gen iPod touches as backups,
now rumors start lol
i hope there's a new one!!

Sure, why not?

Apple had the potential to do this for years, they had the CPU Chip, The Device, The credibility, The App Ecosystem yet they didnt do anything and then they lost to Nintendo Switch in this section which has a bad low end CPU, i hope Apple still picks up its act and give us a compelling Switch Killer. Switch is not a Indie friendly device most open source game engines cannot output to Switch nor as an individual game dev can one get access to the SDK. I hope Apple Changes that becomes more Developer friendly and Open. But Apple has to really convince the game companies, Indies and other game Developers to start writing/porting game titles for Apple Devices.

The screen is too small to use for gaming while iPads would be a more appropriate sized screen. iTouch is ideal for those who want to use it play music. However, Apple have not been good at providing iOS updates on a longer term like they do with the iPhones.

They also have the same potential against home consoles. Now that they are a bit long in the teeth they probably have SoC advantage.

But there is no will, focus or whatever to tackle the gaming market. I have more hope on an headless expansible desktop Mac.

You also stated this in another thread, and I corrected you there. This is false, the A5 powered 5th gen received all updates up to and including iOS 9, just like the iPhone 4s, iPad mini and iPads 2 and 3. The A8 powered 6th gen is still supported on iOS 12 and I would fully expect it to be supported as long as the iPhone 6 series, and iPads Air 2 and mini 4. The iPod Touch is treated exactly the same as any other iOS device on the same chipset generation as far as receiving updates goes.
