Apple TV+ subscribers have begun receiving emails from Apple letting them know that they'll continue to be credited $4.99 for each month they've been charged for the service from February through June 2021.

The credit will be applied to a subscriber's Apple ID and can be used for games, movies, and other Apple services.

The last time Apple issued credits to Apple TV+ subscribers was in November 2020. On that occasion, the credits were deposited monthly through January 2021, so Apple is effectively extending the credits for another five months. As before, expect the amount to vary based on ‌Apple TV+‌ pricing in other countries.

Apple's email suggests the credits are being given to allow subscribers more time to check out the latest Apple original content, but it initially described the deposits as a thank you to users for subscribing to the service.

Back in October, Apple TV+‌ subscribers who have free access to the service through an eligible device purchase beginning in September 2019 had their one-year trial extended until February 2021, and in January, Apple renewed free trials until July.

I checked my account and I have zero credit on my account and was supposed to have had this applied for the last 3 months. I bought an album off Apple music and use £4.99 but 2 months worth seem to be missing from my account. It looks like you might lose it if you don't use it within a month of receiving it, although that is not mentioned anywhere of course...

I haven’t received yet, and my free year expires in February. I will watch a few documentaries and then cancel my subscription, as I’m not interested in their fiction.

Does anyone know about a good streaming service with documentaries? Thank you.

Cant complain. This reduces my Apple One plan to £15 which I was originally paying for the Apple Music Family plan.

Apple must have a plan here. They arent known to give cash away. Still amazed they havent bought MGM which isnt badly priced and surely the sale includes the new Bond film.

Where did you find this information? I do not see the expiration mentioned anywhere.
I haven't read it anywhere and is a guess on my part. I have only used £4.99 so far and my credit is currently zero after 3 months when it should be £9.98. Either the credit isn't being applied to my account or Apple are time limiting it and keeping very quiet about it.

To me this sounds like tv+ isn’t going as well as they hoped

I tried a bunch of stuff. Not for me.

cancelled already

They basically can’t churn out content quickly enough given the pandemic. Refunding the cost of it is the least they could do for the people who would have benefited from the free trial but had otherwise migrated over to Apple One. Else, they would actually be paying more for all the services as a bundle compared to if they had subscribed to them individually.

I think ATV+ is destined to remain a niche service. In typical Apple fashion they’re doing their own thing: some TV shows and documentaries with progressive societal themes. And some movies. Definitely quality over quantity. While I very much do like their content, I’m afraid most people will not be compelled to subscribe and pay.

Surely the credit is being used to pay for your Apple TV+ subscription, no?

Possibly or maybe it’s just not doing well. Everything I watched was bad IMO.

In my case Apple simply changed the due date of my free year trial in my subscriptions. Can be seen under Settings/iCloud/Subscriptions. No mail notification or whatsoever.

Everyone saying this means Apple TV is failing are possibly missing the point.

Apple may very well be doing this because large parts of the world are in lockdown and many people are having to stay at home. This could be a way of them helping people cope, by giving them something. Each time they have set a date when it ends, it has always roughly been around when each lockdown has been scheduled to end. This time it takes us into summer when a large portion if not all of the 1st world’s population will be vaccinated.

Possibly. But Apple never leaves money on the table. I’ll stick with my opinion.

Does this not apply to anyone who started a year free trial during 2020? Still have my original end date.

Watched quite a few shows now and have to say I’m enjoying most of them. I’ve seen far worse on Netflix.

Which shows did you try?

Ted Lasso is probably the best show released in 2020. See and For All Mankind were both great. I also enjoyed The Morning Show. I have not yet watched, but am very much looking forward to: Defending Jacob, Truth Be Told, Servant, Mythic Quest, Greyhound, Fireball, and The Long Way Up.

Also looking forward to Foundation.

Which of them have you tired/watched?

CuriosityStream is quite good. Use Promo Code “ReneRitchie” and you get a year of Nebula as well.
