Not surprising to see Apple exploring plans with other chip manufacturers. Might take a year or two for the first chip once a deal is reached.

Can Intel make 5nm much less 2nm?
Last year Intel opened its Fab 52 at its Chandler, AZ campus on the opposite end of Maricopa County from TSMC's fab complex in Anthem. Fab 52 produces its 18A chips (Panther Lake), which are competitive with if not exactly more advanced than TSMC 2 nm, which itself is not made anywhere outside of Taiwan yet.

Yeah but this is what I don’t get… Intel years behind Apple Silicon, especially with TSMC in the mix. And if Intel actually has the know-how, why don’t they just make their own version like an Intel M5 or something?
Because you’re talking about chip architecture vs manufacturing processes.

The chips are completely different but would have been designed to be built on the same very expensive machinery.

Apple has invested the money to design their own chips but not the facilities to build them.
