If you keep your Mac clean, the keyboard doesn't have any issues. It's the people with food and cat hair all over their computers that are having keyboard problems.
Many are perfectly clean and still fail. Apple wants them to look like that though so they can blame the user instead of the design. I’m sure many have unknowingly fell into that trap.

So honestly, that is why I got the original retina 12" MacBook to start with - because it was much lighter and thinner than a MacBook Air - closest Mac to an iPad, perfect for travel, using in bed, for my wife to cary in her purse.

Being thin has benefits that go far beyond appearance.

Of course, you'd think that a nearly trillion dollar company could, you know, offer options, like a model, let's call it "Pro", that could be thick enough to include a keyboard many of their customers didn't hate with the fiery passion of a thousand burning suns, while still offering one or two models (MacBook, Air?) thin enough to require a more limited movement and less reliable keyboard design?

Customers having options? Being able to choose between multiple product lines what form/size/features they valued the most based on their use/needs? The most expensive model not including the crappiest keyboard? That would be insanely great.

22,000 signatures huh?

These never go anywhere because they are just normal when you sell 20M Macs per year. The vocal minority doesn't mean there is something fundamentally wrong with the engineering.

As usual, many people are overreacting and extrapolating.

- The IBM Model M is a membrane keyboard. And it is so amazingly good.
- All the backlit black keycaps on laptops are painted black. If the keycap were painted from the back, the keycap would be milky white with no legend in the daylight.

- What is the relevance to the post that the M is a membrane? The membrane does wear out, unlike the capacitive Model F
- The keycaps could be doubleshot but no doubt that'd be too expensive for them to bother

We are talking about this yes? From Ms Smooth Talking, Let's Make It Thinner Man ?

LOL, so much for "stability" XD (like really, what did they mean by that?)

My Apple wireless keyboard from 2012 is working PERFECTLY, and I eat at my desk, it gets pretty crubby sometimes. Though I try to clean it once in a while.

I guess we should all use our Macs in perfectly sterile, clean rooms with air filters, no windows as to not let dust in, (basically a lab) right?

Didn't realize Apple started making keyboards with rivets instead of screws that are nearly impossible for the end user to self service. Have always taken for granted that keyboards are user serviceable from the 1980s Apple II series Alps key switches that can be removed from base, disassembled, cleaned and retensioned to recent bluetooth keyboards with double-sided adhesive that can be disassembled with relative ease with a hair dryer.

Wow!

This is one I can get behind. I’ve had my keyboard replaced twice within a year because of it. I hope they change the keyboards on these and repair the old ones.

Considering my MacBook Pro had an issue with a sticky tab key the other day and it took me a LOT of canned air and messing with it, I would be all about forcing Apple to make a fix for this out of warranty.

Ah. How much stock do you own? ;)
In the thousands.

Doesn't matter though...Apple is killing it and these never go anywhere because it's frankly not the norm. Apple makes great products and supports them above and beyond. Maybe there are some keyboard issues for some customers. What's the big deal? I'm sure millions don't have any issues and the few that do will be taken care of.

How's that battery one doing?

Entitled much?

2) You could have waited for Kraby Lake, you chose not to.
3) You didn't buy AppleCare, thus your fault. Apple warrants for 12 months. All that is required.
4) If you took it back before AppleCare had expired, they would have been more than happy to replace the keyboard for you. Two friends have had their keyboards replaced under warranty, and the issue has never returned.

#1: Entitled? You bet your rear on that. I spent nearly 3k for my MBP and for that money, I shouldn't have keyboard issues.
#2: 2017 models have similar issues.
#3: All that is required is a pretty low bar. In Europe, it's much longer by law. Perhaps we should lobby congress to extend the law if Apple is going to be so cheap on such an important piece of their ecosystem. MacBook Pros are for Pros by design, after all.
#4: Mine started acting up at month 15.

How's the ebook collusion lawsuit going? Oh wait, it's a done deal with $450m settlement in favor of consumers.

Don't think you realize that big corps don't care that you're kissing up for them.

Hope all you people suffering from this can meet a solution soon, our personal machines were all returned within 3 days of purchase, you could tell they would break sooner than later, the rest of our professionals are dealing with these issues daily, this has been the most frustrating MBP release ever, granted.

It's great if you love it and works for you but it's design is flawed and lacks any kind of QA clearly by the rate of fails vs. life cycle of the products.

Don't buy stuff on day 1, wait for release, go to the store and try it for yourself because if you blindly buy their stuff, it will empower them to get away with downgrades/flawed designs like this (magic mouse charging port on bottom, etc).

Again, if you love it and works for you so be it, but don't think you are free from the issue much less don't come lecture people with fairy tales about your kitten's hair when many are experiencing a legitimate disappointment.

Wow thousands in stock! You should post on Forbes and maybe on ebay, bid for a brain who knows..

I meant thousands of shares, if that changes your snarky attitude. Maybe you have tens of thousands of shares, but I doubt it.

I have the late macbook pro 2016 model and the problems with the keyboard started about a month ago, weirdly enough
3 of my keys starting working poorly at around the same time.

"K" has to be clicked hard to register and the "," and "O" types out twice about half of the times.

I don't kiss up...I live in reality and own shares, so I have an interest in understanding the degree of meaningfulness of a lawsuit in a company I own.

Oh wow, was that a whole $450M? It came up to something like $1.50/book and was a rounding error for earnings. Apple brought in $1B/day in sales during Christmas and probably just agreed to the $450M to make it go away. Fine, they did something wrong and wrote a small check.

Again, these don't matter for either party. It's too small to impact Apple and consumers get a couple bucks. Big waste of time.

It seems to me that the number of complaints regarding the butterfly keyboard of the 2015-2017 12” MacBook pale in comparison to the number of complaints of the 2016-2017 MacBook Pro butterfly keyboard. I wonder if it’s simply because there are more MBP’s sold/being used in the world as compared to 12” rMB’s or if there is some fundamental difference between the two keyboards/models causing the rate of keyboard failure to be higher on the MBP’s?...[/QUOTE]

I have used computers for 35 years and the keyboard on my Mac Book Pro is the worst, including the rubber keys on my Sinclair Spectrum from 1984.

It started when I bough it, the Shift key was broken so i had to return it (DOA), Then keys started to get stuck after a year. I tried all kind of things (recommended on youtube and by Apple), which made it slightly better, but eventually the problems came back and I now have 10 keys that don't work properly. I have stopped using the keyboard all together, instead I bring a wireless keyboard with me all the time.

PC folks are laughing at me and my $3000 Mac that doesn't work.

I remember the iPhone 4 antenna gate, and this is much, much, worse.

Growing trend... We started off with the battery lawsuits... And now this now....

Apple are replacing affected models but that is obviously not enough.. Users know they have a hook in. so look out for the thing in future Mac's to go wrong,.

This will be never-ending now. Particularly when the first rule of thumb won't even apply. The lawsuits are much better way to get someone's attention than just "perhaps if we replaced it, it would go away"

You never hear that ever.

You become a huge business success by cutting corners, what ever it takes, that is what they all say up there isn’t it? Make sacrifices for the bottom line people. Thinner and lighter doesn’t have to mean crappier and crappier, charging 4K + for a luxury laptop as these are and then telling your VIP clientele that they’re “typing all wrong” ? Common now hahahahaha. Everyone who purchased a MBP between mid 2016 up to current, should be given an inconvience check at least 1800-2500 USD in the States and 3000CAD in Canada, regardless, knowing eventually this will happen to all those machines, no? What is a MBP without a keyboard? Just an aluminum cafeteria tray is what it is !!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAHAHAAA !!!!

Further if Apple knows about this defect and continues to sell machines they know are defective, then it is going to get messy for them.

Of course they know about the defect. They've already patented a revised design that would address this very issue, published on March 8th, 2018:

http://pdfaiw.uspto.gov/.aiw?docid=...html%25252FPTO%25252Fsrchnum.html%2526r=1%252

https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/9/17100594/apple-patent-dirt-debris-liquid-snacks

https://9to5mac.com/2018/03/10/macbook-keyboard-crumb-proof/

From Page 12 of the patent filing:

For example, keyboards typically involved a number of moving keys. Liquid ingress around the keys into the keyboard can damage electronics. Residues from such liquids, such as sugar, may corrode or block electrical contacts, prevent key movement by bonding moving particles, and so on.

Solid contaminants such as dust, dirt, food crumbs, and the like may lodge under keys, blocking electrical contacts, getting in the way fo key movement, and so on.

What can Apple do even if this lawsuit succeeds? If Apple keeps replacing the keyboard, it will malfunction again. We must also consider the downtime when the MacBook or MacBook Pro is sent for repairs.

~

I am disappointed to say the least and do not see a viable solution coming in the form of repairs, repairs and repairs.

I suspect a repair extension program will be announced, covering the replacement of the top case assembly for 3 to 4 years from the date of purchase, where owners can take their computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider to have the keyboard assembly replaced.

The replacement keyboard assembly will be prone to the same defect, and the issue will reoccur again at a later time, at which point the customer can choose to have the computer repaired again and again until such time the machine enters "Vintage" or "Obsolete" product status and replacement parts are no longer available.

Exactly the same as the 2011 MacBook Pro GPU issues, 2011 iMac GPU issues, 2012 MacBook Pro HDD Flex Cable issues and 2012+ iMac Stand Mechanism issues, among several others.

You don't know that... Once something has been replaced, you have no idea when (or if) it will fail again ever. You may go though 12 month and not happen, or only 6..

Perhaps we all are getting confused over the reason why keys will stick and the fact tech will fail 'over time' which is a separate issue, its not related.

It only appears that way because its better to bring several issues into one.

I had to pay 1400 cdn a month after I got my MacBook Pro last fall since the number 6/7 key were acting up like they detailed. My AppleCare didn’t cover it. Would have been nice to not have to pay for that....
