There is no doubt these keyboards have an issue. I have had three of them...one was replaced for keyboard issues (bad H key and space bar), then that was replaced for other unrelated issues but the keyboard sporadically acted up on that one too. Now I have a third after they replaced the entire computer (at my request since they had to change the keyboard, display and then the logic board went on the first one). The replacement computer which was a brand new 2017 version also causes occasional issues. These computers are basically crap. Battery life is nowhere near what I expected, keyboard sucks, and dongle hell is ridiculous.

This keyboard has been a huge leadership failure on Tim's part. Obviously the engineers worked on it and worked on it, and because of all the work they put into it they thought they could release it.

But the keyboard is still just horrible, from both usability and reliability points of view. A leader needs to have the guts to say that despite all the work, the butterfly keyboard is terrible and should never be released.

I don't think Steve would have let this keyboard see the light of day.

Own 2013 retina 15 inch(purchased in Jan 2014), never bothered to upgrade as they start knocking ports, removed magsafe etc...

In 2018 we are still talking about fixing keyboards, common! I use BT keyboards while connecting MBP with external monitor, most of the times!

Got the TopCase of my 2016 replaced twice, last time with the 2017 model and everything was perfect for months. Recently problem returned, although much less prominently: it’s only very sporadically noticeable, but definitely still not always working as it should.

Same for me. The replacement happens about a year ago. My "enter"-key is already soft to press on one site. -.- And the problem with a heated keyboard and its clickiness is also prominent. :/

Apple already had a fix, which is the gen 2 butterfly keyboard. The lawsuit is certainly warranted in this case as Apple could've put the gen 2 keyboard for units with the gen 1 keyboard, or make units that had gen 1 keyboard with gen 2 keyboard, not keep making the failed gen 1 keyboard when they already fixed it with gen 2. I say Apple asked for the lawsuit. And I had thought why people didn't sue Apple earlier.

Don't think they redesigned the keyboard for the new laptops being released in a few months, It's unfortunate as I am in the market to buy a laptop.

Am I the only person that has ZERO issues with the butterfly keyboard on the Pro? Was it a process getting used to it from my old Air? -Yes. Was it difficult? -Not really. Granted I've only had my new Pro for a little over a year, but I have not experienced any issues with the keyboard at all. I also eat constantly while using it so chances are crumbs are dropped all over the keyboard almost daily. I guess I'm lucky?

I have a 2017 15inch from September of last year. No issues so far. I type on it every day. Yes it took some getting used too because of the depth. Now when I type on my 2012 15inch the keys seem smaller (they are) and mushy. I think they need to add some depth but keep the same key size and fix whatever is happening to those impacted. I always get Apple Care. Come June of 2020 if I am having issues it will be fixed by Apple.

I wish Apple hadn't done what they did and gone with the 12" Macbook type keyboard in the Pro to make up for the battery space they lost when they put the useless gimmick that is the touch bar... However that's what they did and now they're (deservedly) reaping what they've sown.

For their sake I hope they come to their senses and get rid of the gimmick and the garbage keyboard in the next version, but I'm not exactly counting on it. It's a big part of the reason why I went with a second hand machine from before the gimmick was added rather than a new machine despite easily being able to afford even a top-of-the-range machine. Form over function is something Apple has always had a tendency for and going back on a dysfunctional design choice isn't exactly something they're known for.

I haven’t yet upgraded from my 2015 pro despite being a regular upgrader because they removed all the ports and didn’t offer a non-touchbar 15” - saw no use for it. But I feel really bad for the people who took the plunge and got burned by something as basic as a keyboard. I hope Apple do the right thing although they have already left it too late.

About time.

If Apple had put its hands up, admitted failure, and taken measures to treat affected customers fairly, I'd be ok with a company ring an occasional mistake.

Instead they took me through months of pain, hassle, expense, and treated me with contempt.

I hope the punishment is significant.

My story - in the end the UK legal system got me my money back in full:

So honestly, that is why I got the original retina 12" MacBook to start with - because it was much lighter and thinner than a MacBook Air - closest Mac to an iPad, perfect for travel, using in bed, for my wife to cary in her purse.

Being thin has benefits that go far beyond appearance.

That's fine for a glorified netbook posing as a vanity product. It's cretinous for something that purports to be a tool for professionals.

I'm sorry, but a consumer cannot blame a company for the consumer not purchasing the extended warranty. If you chose not to extend your warranty, then its on you.

You shouldn't have to purchase an extended warranty ever. If Apple were more honest and advertised its Pro line as "Good for one year" it would get the sales it deserved.

Other companies that take a genuine pride in their products and their workmanship give multi-year warranties. Apple has always been about the bare minimum. It has always been about the Benjamins whatever nonsense Ive gets dredged up to witter on about.

This has happened to around 4 of my keys now. It makes the computer unusable at times, especially when one of the affected keys corresponds to a character in some of your passwords!

Haha. This all sounds familiar...

"Now, should we initiate a recall? Take the number of vehicles in the field, A. Multiply it by the probable rate of failure, B. Multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement, C. A x B x C equals X. If X is less than the cost of a recall, we don't do one."

I don't know if the issue's entirely been fixed. There are even reports of the 2017 MacBook Pro (The Gen 2 I'm assuming) having the same issue. I even returned my 2016 MacBook Pro due to keyboard issues for a 2017 and still if dust gets underneath a key I will have an unresponsive keyboard. Sigh.. miss the reliable keyboards. Looking forward to the upgraded keyboard a patent was filed for!

Well, if you were using an iPad Pro instead of that dinosaur laptop, then none of these problems would occur. What is wrong with you people? What more does Tim Cook have to do to get you on the right path? Did you not see the photo of the great man seated in his office using nothing more than his iPad?

I keep my keyboard clean and never had a problem. Some people have spunk, poop and other debris, I would not touch it.

If Apple doesn't introduce new keyboards this Fall, I'm not sure what I'm going to do. My GF needs a new laptop as her 2010 Macbook Pro is quite slow at this point. But I'm not going to suggest she buys into these style keyboards.

He can get replaced to start with. Than he would do just fine.
