Nobody's forcing you to use Safari any longer than it takes to download Firefox/Chrome/Opera/Camino/whatever. You can deal with it.

No-one forced you to use Internet Explorer either, but Microsoft was still forced to now offer you an options screen.

Seems like a better target would be the App Store's arcane (and whimsical) approval policy. If something's not made with the iPhone SDK, Apple could just reject it.

I believe once an inquiry is launched they will look at everything and not just the original reason for the inquiry.

I honestly don't see the Anti-Trust argument... The fact that neither agency can figure out which would be responsible for the investigation should show you the answer.... no case here, IMO.

Apple making statements like they are the largest mobile manufacturer certainly don't help.

Why? This isn't like Microsoft in the 90's. Just because Apple sells the MOST, doesn't mean they have a monopoly. Look at the competition....is there some? Yeah....a LOT. Apple will NEVER have a monopoly over the smartphone market.

People need to stop thinking of it in terms of how much they sell, or how big their market cap is, this has nothing to do with being a monopoly.

Apple has been acting like a d*ck lately so it comes as no surprise. They seem to think that they can do anything they want.

I think this like the flash debacle, the iPhone storm troopers breaking down the door of gizmodo and the like is that they're no longer the media darling.

Simple answer. If Apple somehow loses, they need to badge Flash apps as such, which tells me me:
a) Developer is lazy and depends on hardware to make up the difference for their poor programming.
b) Oh yeah, right. I'll never buy that app. Ever.

I don't get it...they make a device. They say "if you want your software to run on this device, you have to follow these rules, if not there's plenty of other devices/computers you can develop for". Apple is hardly the only game in town. They're not a monopoly.

No-one forced you to use Internet Explorer either, but Microsoft was still forced to now offer you an options screen.

Microsoft didn't get in trouble for bundling IE. They got in trouble for illegally abusing their monopoly position to prevent competition. The browser choice screen is simply a remedy for their ill-begotten gains.

They've been acting like a monopoly.

Very interesting. I hope that nothing really amounts to anything though. I really don't want flash on my device or have to hear every wacko out their complaining about how flash has reduced their battery life to nothing. Flash has lived past its Golden Years and now needs to be retired.

I love when people argue without any clue what they are talking about

This is NOT about flash on iphone or ipad, its about using flash or flexbuilder for that matter to build native iphone apps. If an app compiles as an iphone app it should not matter what tools were used to build it. Personally i think flashbuilder is a MUCH better dev tool than apples own mess of a dev environment. I think apple is way off base on this one and hope they lose. I love my iphone, ipad and every mac I have ever owned but their attitude lately is horrible and they are my like MS than MS these days.

Yes :)

If justice exists in this world it should smack Apple's botty rather hard here!

What kind of "justice" are you referring to? The kind that the government keeps taking away from everything by meddling in far too many regions of the economy?

Apple spent billions in R&D, Apple developed the product, the OS, the hardware, the marketing, etc. How is it remotely JUSTIFIED for the government to step in and say what they can and cannot do with their OWN product? IF it was the ONLY smartphone, and developers had NO OTHER PLATFORMS to develop on, and it was killing the economy then maybe they should look into it.

As of right now, this is just another complete abuse of power by the government. When will Congress realize that they're just not that important?

And don't go citing Europe's choice to hose M$ over IE, that's a stretch of justice in and of itself.

Hardly.

The police executed a Warrant - not Apple.

This is good. If Apple loses the support of the developer, it will be 1994 all over again (crappy software support for mac, that is)...

... there's more to mac than the iPhone, Steve.

The New York Post reports

This is typical FUD from the Post. Most of the tech community is not from NYC, so I don't expect you guys to know better.

How is Apple liable of violating antitrust laws when there are more BlackBerries in the market? You have to have a monopoly in a market before being accused guilty of any antitrust statute.

Don't worry true believers. I live in New York City, and trust me the paper is a rag that my dog won't even poop on. This is just link fodder. It has the lowest circulation of any of the dailies here and is owned by Newscorp.

Enough said.

Ohhh, now we get to see how many posteres here understand the difference between the Flash compiler program ban and just having Flash run on the iPhone.

I hope it's a small percentage, but I'm not too optimistic...
Based on recent forum activity, I'd say it would be 2-3% tops.

There's a huge number of brain-damaged fanboys and haters here who basically know nothing about technology, despite being gadget-crazed lunatics.

Apple is getting ridiculous. Apple is getting Horst with this attitudes. For me the new Microsoft is apple do know what i men.

Some they day they start to ban applications on mac too. apple you get what you choose.

Let us decide

It would be nice if we had a chance to decide if something is substandard or not. If it is, people will not buy the product, as easy as that. Apple could even display if the app is a native or using adobe's builder. This way, people will know before buying that they are in risk of "substandard" user experience.

I like this lot more than them just banning the whole thing. Same with the flash player. I want to be able to browse the whole web, and if the Flash Player drains my battery faster or slows down my iPhone, I will turn it off.

Why do people feel the need to make stuff up? If you really feel that they original action was bad, wouldn't saying what actually happened be enough?

What does being a "media darling" have anything to do with this?

And I hate to tell you, but Apple has every right to choose how they want to run their phone business. It's their device. It's their rules. They are in no way forcing you to buy the phone or use the phone. Within AT&T you do have many other choices.

As long as there is competition, Apple doesn't have much to worry about. All Apple has to worry about is whether customers or developers stop buying their phone.

The day you walk into an AT&T store....or a Verizon store.....or a T-mobile store and look left and see only Apple phones...and look right and see only Apple phones......is the day you can start to worry about a monopoly.

Anti-competitive, sure; Anti-trust?!? no.

1st, they would have to show that Apple has a monopoly on mobile development ( which they do not ). Without the monopoly their can be no anti-trust and therefore no crime in their actions.

Sure it's anti-competitive, anti-adobe, and it may even be dumb but not criminal by any degree.

Great! I love Apple, but I think they're taking the Adobe hate too far...

Don't think they hate Adobe at all And I am sure they had talks about what works and what doesn't and Adobe can't or doesn't want to re-write Flash.

This is about the Apple user experience.

When outside forces diminish it, Apple stops it from happening.

It is the job of the outside developers to make their products compatible with Apples devices if they want to sell their technology via Apple, not the other way around.

They are free to chose not to do so, but then don't come and cry.

This is a non event in the Antitrust world.
Wish the government would spend their time and money better.
We have bigger problems than Adobe Flash

SOO many of the comments are generic enough that I just can't tell. I can't put a number on it.

I can tell that at least some of them get it, which is good.
