Stunts like this are what cause company's like Apple to leave and go to other countries that are happy to have jobs for people just saying .
Yep, pretty sure Apple will be in Russia or China ten years from now. 🤪

I am betting the government will lose, they don't have a good record. They don't have a great track record and if Trump wins they next DOJ can just drop the suit, so it is political too.
My impression was that Trump doesn't exactly like Tim Apple.

If you have the "if you don't like it, build your own" take, save it.

You don't understand anti trust or why it exists.
Or maybe some of us do, but disagree with how it is used to force companies to open the platforms to those that had no financial interest in its development.

Will be entertaining to see what needle they thread to apply this to Apple and not other companies. Apple’s already been found to NOT be a monopoly, so maybe they’ll do the whole made up “Gatekeeper” thing the EU did?

I’m curious if “Making a product better than competitors” will be one of the illegal practices :)

...as long as Apple's terms aren't (illegally) unfair and anticompetitive - which they've been found in the EU and the US.
No one has demonstrated anything illegal with Apple’s terms (that’s done by judges, not the EU commission, that can only fine).

It’s okey if the EU commission thinks Apple’s terms are unfair; they just don’t have to make us all agree with what they think, and prevent them from building their product and us from buying it.

And finally, Apple has a very low global % of market share, they can’t be anticompetitive even if they wanted to.

Man, I hate this garbage. Sure as a consumer, it be nice to have some of this stuff more open, but this is Apples product. The government attempting to control how they operate it is insane. It's not like there isn't an alterative to iOS and the Apple Ecosystem. If I ever created an incredibly successful business like Apple I would want to be able to operate it how I please. This is nuts.
Agreed. I’m so tired of this garbage. None of this is an antitrust violation if you can simply choose Android or, dare I say it, a flip phone.

Can't you see the pattern down the road? You might laugh now but if this bullet list continues to go on one day you will be forced to be an Apple Bank customer in order to pay for anything on their devices cause they would not be accepting payments from any other bank issued card. That's exactly how taking advantage of monopoly works.
Are you kidding? Some folks here would readily welcome such a scenario. "You don't want to use Apple Bank? Go buy an Android. yOu hAvE chOiCEsss!!!"

Then I'm sorry that you don't understand why markets need regulations, including anti-trust regulations.
It’s not about understanding/believing. We can have different opinions, and it’s absolutely ok as long as we don’t force each other to act as one wants.

I wonder if the government also gets upset that you can’t put BMW parts on a Mercedes vehicle? Seems to me like crying over nothing, or perhaps Apple doesn’t bend over to give them unlimited access like Google, etc does.

It's only antitrust because Android is such a terrible ecosystem.

The best android tablet can't even touch the capability of an iPad from 2014. Proper app scaling, forget about it.

Want a watch that doesn't really work? Google's got you covered. Oh, and it won't pair with an iPhone either.

Want lossless music (1980's CD quality), nah just listen to youtube music where a 12 year old uploads a copy that clips and is encoded at 64 kbps with youtube.

Want 4k video with dolby atmos? That'll be extra.

Want MFA autofill from both text and email, with auto delete so your messages app and inbox are clean? Nope again.

Want to backup your phone to your computer, allowing a full bit-for-bit restore? No way José.

Playing a song on your phone and want to transfer it to your speaker, just tap the speaker and apple's ultra wideband has you covered.

No additional charge MFA, keychain has got your back with passkeys and OTP.

Want to unlock your computer with your watch, you can with Apple.

Would you like a real biometrics, based on face depth and not just an easily faked camera image?

Lidar sensor for pro apps and an accurate measure app. Yessireebob.

Would you like your messages encrypted with post-quantum cryptography?

Zero knowledge, real e2e encryption, just turn on advanced data protection.

Want to run a phone or tablet for 6-8 years and run the latest OS. Of course you can.

(I can go on with hundreds more of these features)

Yeah, there are individual solutions to the above, but they all don't work together like the apple ecosystem.

Each year android will laser focus one useless feature like "120 Hz refresh" or some ultra high megapixel count camera, or 6 cameras but completely miss the bandwagon on what people want. (read: we don't want 3 different mail apps, carrier bloatware, 4 browsers and 6 messaging applications that all seem to step on each-other.)

  • How the Apple Watch works better with iPhone than other smart watches do.
    • agree, they should make Apple watch independent of the phone
  • How Apple locks competitors out of iMessage.
    • this is just a messaging app, there are other options like whats app, not really monopoly.
  • How Apple blocks financial firms from offering tap-to-pay services similar to Apple Pay.
    • agree.
  • Whether Apple favors its own apps and services over those provided by third-party developers.
    • agree
  • How Apple has blocked cloud gaming apps from the App Store.
    • no idea what this about.
  • How Apple restricts the ‌‌iPhone‌‌'s location services from devices that compete with AirTag.
    • agree
  • How App Tracking Transparency impacted the collection of advertising data.
    • is Apple benefiting from this then yes, if not good option.
  • In-app purchase fees collected by Apple.
    • this is Apple's store, i think Apple should be able to collect small %.
    • If Apple is guilty here then Xbox, Nintendo, PS3, fortnight are all guilty.

Because it is within the national interest to ensure a healthy marketplace, which means ensuring competition exists. This isn't a new concept. The government has been going after monopolies since the 1890s in case you weren't aware.
you can take healthy market place even further and say Apple should allow Android/Linus to run on iPhone.
Sell A/M series chips to competitors
iOS is monopoly on iPhones
MacOS is monopoly on Laptops and desktops.

why should the government tell a company how to operate?

why does the government know better than the people purchasing the product(s)? if people don't like it, they can vote with their wallets.. as they do with LITERALLY every other company.

don't like something? don't buy it.
It's really entirely and completely this simple.

Yeah because Apple is going to leave its biggest market.... Apple would lose money doing that.

The DOJ is just trying to shake down a company that has been enormously successful and make things crappier for us, the end users.
Yes, that must be it. Someone at the DOJ is saying, "hmm how can I make transpo1's life just a little bit worse." This obviously has nothing at all to do with ensuring markets are properly regulated...

It’s not about understanding/believing. We can have different opinions, and it’s absolutely ok as long as we don’t force each other to act as one wants.
Sure, you can believe whatever you want. No qualms with that. Just like the guy above apparently thinks the DOJ is just trying to make people's lives worse, because reasons. However, if you understood the ramifications of an unregulated or underregulated market, then you wouldn't have the opinion that you do.

The EU commission has - and "Apple has been ordered to implement ‌App Store‌ changes that will allow developers to use metadata, buttons, links, and other calls to action to direct customers to purchasing mechanisms outside of the ‌App Store" by a U.S. judge.

And finally, Apple has a very low global % of market share, they can’t be anticompetitive even if they wanted to.
More than 50% of consumer spending isn't "low".

Global marketshare doesn't matter for individual jurisdictions, and you don't need 50%+ to be found anticompetitive.
