dust under the display on these 2014 iMacs are a significant concern. Took my iMac in over the summer and the repair was going to be $600. So free would be such a good thing.

I hate the glossy monitor but I prefer to have matt screen - much easier for eyes & least of the reflections.
iMacs are desk fixtures and can be easily aligned to avoid most glares in a regular office space. So long as glossy screens are not positioned directly at lights or busy doorways, they always look better than matte displays. Of course laptop displays are a different story.

They're not necessarily 4+ year old though, these computers were sold until 2017, and are still sold through the refurbished store (or at least they were until recently). Some of these model are therefore still under warranty.
That's irrelevant. They are supporting 4 year old ones too, so they support very old hardware.

In my humble opinion, Apple would prefer you to buy the newer iMac with $600 discount. Just like when they told my daughter when they said they don't fix logic board and we have to buy a new iPhone. Then later on Apple announced that they fix logic board on certain iPhones. I guess they're not doing well on the new iPhone XS's but they need your money they're really begging donations right now. Apple fanboys we need to help this company because they desperately need more money right now, we don't want them to go broke.

Not at all. They're required by law (California and various countries), support contracts, and EPEAT certification to support hardware at least 5 years after last sale. Dell, for example, will sell 5 year support contracts, 3 years being automatically included for business hardware.
Support can have many meanings and would be laregely different than what Apple does. In most states, they don't have to do a damn thing anyway after that long.

There’s something missing here. Free repair for damaged display?? In or out of warranty.
Is the display prone to damage in normal usage? i.e. faulty/dangerous?

If so, a $600 trade-in, for what should be a Woking computer is insulting. That Mac should have years of life left in it. Time was, for a defective Mac, Apple would swap it for an equivalent refurbished model with apologies.

The zillion dollar hippy not only jacks up prices each year for Macs and iPhones, instead of offering newer tech for the same price (as it had in the past), it now offers trade-ins on defective devices, instead of replacement units. Cook’s Apple is all about profit & appeasing the stock market. Rejecting that basic Apple tenant will erode what little good will is left with their community, leaving only ‘customers’ with no loyalty and frankly, no good answer when someone asks, “Which computer should I buy?”

Let’s hope everyone with a defective iMac happens to have a stantdy just waiting around so they can endure the 3 month repair period, or the get a taste of the new improved stock market driven Apple ‘satisfaction’.

Apple's EPEAT certification requires them to have spare parts available 5 years after end of production (4.4.3.1), as well as offer a service agreement for a minimum 3 years.

Read the standard yourself.

Why? It's a nearly perfect, minimal design. However, I do wish they'd have some fun with the Mac and offer them in different colours.

Let's start by reducing the bezels. An inch in today's world looks giant. It should be 3/8" at most. Let's also have a 32" size. With small bezels it wouldn't take up that much more space than does the current 27". Let's also make it height adjustable. Tilt is great...but incomplete.

Why wouldn't they, they practically only update Macs every two years as it is, so these are only a couple cycles behind at most. It would make more sense if the article mentioned the price of an out of warranty display repair. I am guessing replacing the display out of warranty costs about the same $1200 that they are discounting the new one to judging by how much parts for the MacBook Pro 13" non touch bar cost (still in warranty). I am pretty sure the display for my MacBook Pro was a $600 part (Canadian) when I had it replaced
iMac and MacBook Pro have been updated every year since 2008, with one sole exception for the iMac.

But a 2014/2015 iMac could hardly be considered old, especially considering the relatively small increases the in the performance of Intel processors during that time. If this were the 1990s or even the 2000s it would be a different story.

Definitely hoping this points to an October update, and with a changed display assembly. Both models going even halfway into their bezels with screen would be a substantial step up, it's not just a vanity on a desktop, on the 21 in particular that's a significant increase in space both ways.

Bonus hope would be ditching all HDD options to get the iMac Pro-like dual blower design. Really quiet and much higher TDP.

Please no!!, Apple "redesign" usually means taking something away or replace it for something less functional.

Actually the current design still looks modern and for me is s till the best all-in-one design. Surface Studio looks nice but I'm not a fan of the zero-gravity hinge. Let0s see what Microsoft announces today.
all the aluminium macs (post 2007) are so gorgeous they're timeless. However, there are lots and lots of ways to explore with new designs.

The iPhone 4 was gorgeous and Apple didn't stop there. Imagine if they did.

Yep, that can be done easily moving into correct position or angle but end up neck pains in some case. The whole point to having the glossy thing to grab your attention this is an Apple product.

Shortage is because Tim Cook still thinks iPad Pro will replace the PC (personal computer), and Apple didn't plan accordingly.

“I think if you’re looking at a PC, why would you buy a PC anymore? No really, why would you buy one? Yes, the iPad Pro is a replacement for a notebook or a desktop for many, many people. They will start using it and conclude they no longer need to use anything else, other than their phones.”
It’s really not surprising Cook is not a fan of PC purchases, given he sells Macs and iPads (and iPhones) lol. And Jobs also thought far fewer people would need desktops or laptops; I’m sure you remember the truck analogy.

You may not like it, but tablet computers—or even iPhones— are replacing PCs and Macs, whether notebooks and desktops, for many, many people.

That’s not a prediction, it’s a fact. Since the iPad came bursting in to the scene, desktops and notebooks have been in decline. Combined, they sell about a hundred million fewer units than six or seven years ago. Apple sells more than twice as many iPads as Macs, for many years now.

Macs have actually bucked the trend, pretty much maintaining their unit volume against an overall contracting market, so Apple has actually increased its market share with respect to PCs.

How about my late 2013 model Tim. fix it!
Our 2013 monitor went bad in just under 3 years. The non-retina lcd cost $600 for just the part with no warranty. So I got an ASUS on craigslist for $50. It looks stupid with a monitor in front of a monitor but that’s Apple’s all-in-one for ya.

I doubt this means we will see new a design of the iMac. Because if they did the iMac Pro would have an old design less than a year after being introduced. Tim would not release the iMac Pro just to have it redesigned a year later. Waiting for a new iMac design is like waiting for the G5 Powerbook all over again....

There are no rumors of a re-designed iMac for this year. Ive doesn’t have nearly the problem with the bezels on the iMac (or MacBook Pro for that matter) that some MR forum users do.

That said, Apple designs do have a life cycle, and both the iMac and MBP are nearing the end of theirs. I expect both to be refreshed over the next year or two.
