Shoot, at this point I will take a fully compatible MS Exchange client over a 970 powermac. What is all that speed worth if I still have to run a windows box for corp email.
You...you're right! This is all a sham! Apple has been leaking rumors of a 64-bit OS and created an elaborate hoax with IBM to make it look like they're going to go with a new architecture when really...really we'll just be waiting for the G5......even if it......never comes.......

🙁 oh....oh, god, I don't think I can hold on any longer......I feel so sick....ohhhh god....I.....I guess me and my iMac will just....die together I guess...if only......hey! maybe, maybe the new version of iMovie will be really good! 🙂

OH, WHO AM I KIDDING!!!! IT'S ALL OVER!!!! 🙁 🙁 WAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Hi Folks,

Nice community here, some good folks. But here the question: I am a to be switcher, and im looking into what kind of apple i want. I often see people refer to 'events' at which i am lost to their propose/frequently and stuff like that.
In this thred people have referred to Macworld and WWDC, what are these things, why and when are they?

(hope this is kind of a clear question)

Boy, that's a toughie Cuckoo. It all depends on your wants, needs, and budget. As you may have noticed, in the Mac world, your budget makes a huge difference.

My reccomendation: WAIT. The next gen of mac processors and OS is coming and you don't want to be a recent switcher who has last year's (Q1-2, 3?) hardware, because there is going to be a huge difference, if you havn't picked that up already.

WWDC stands for World Wide Developers Conference. With a free membership to the Apple Developers thingamagig you can buy a ticket for $1200 or so. Then there's the Macworld Expos. These are basically just big opportunities for Apple to announce their Big New Things. The thing is, this year those Big New Things are getting hot.

Or maybe there'll just be enhancements to iLife, who can tell? 🙄

Someone may add to this, but just sit tight. The worse that will happen is you will be forced to buy something bottom of the line for $1500 or more less than what you'd be paying for the same thing now. When the bombs drop you'll know it...

Why be a pessimist?

Why are so many people being so pessimistic?

Think about good things in life:

-Apple will release new 970 Pmacs (w/ 900Mhz FSB, 200GB ATA/133, 1GB RAM, SuperDeDooper Drive, OS 10.3, New Pro Mouse & Keyboard, Quad 2.5Ghz Processors, etc...)
-Apple will also release the new tablet-like devices
-Apple will also release new PPC 970 iMacs & PowerBooks (up to 2.0 Ghz
-Apple will also release a major update to AppleWorks, which is fully compatible (not through MacLink) with MS Office
-Apple will release a video service (similar to music service)
-Apple will release an iMovie update that makes it much faster
-Apple will release a Safari update that upgrades your internet connection to T3 (or maybe DS3)
-Apple will release audio editing software that blows away Pro Tools
-Apple will release some cool sunglasses that replace the ones I just broke... 😎

🙂

Announcements

Hello,

I hope that Apple includes Serial ATA.

The speeds and throughput would help alot for video and audio manipulation.

Well this is of course proof of the quad 970, new tablet, and 10.3 shipping that day free for anyone with a license for 7.1 and up! Woot!

I think I want a SuperDeDooper Drive. Yes, I will have to get one. 🙂

From what I've read about Serial ATA the performance gains won't be apparent until hard drives get faster. I guess in a RAID setup you would see some advantage but I doubt it would be much over a regular ATA RAID config.

Nice list. Maybe Steve will see this (we know he reads rumor sites!) and decide why not and unleash everything in the R & D labs on the unsuspecting public. Since we all know they have all the 970's ready to go in a warehouse underground in Cupertino.

'coming in 3 months' or something like that they could pretty much guarentee that sales would fall off the charts until the 970 was actually available for ordering. Who's gonna buy a G4 if they know when the 970 is coming? Nobody.

who's ordering a g4 now anyway (let alone in 3 months)? especially when an intel machine running whatever u need (linux, xp, redhat, etc.) can do it faster and cheaper?

bring on the 970 and bring it on now!!

Really? I have yet to see a PC with these MTOP numbers:

http://forgetcomputers.com/~jdroz/09.html

Not to mention Apple's machines are known to give you better productivity because of their ease of use and troubleshooting compared to PCs. Speed of processor isn't everything. There are many other factors. It is not to say the 970 isn't holding people
from buying G4s. But if you need a computer that performs, the current run of G4s are more than adequate.

More Optimism...

I forgot to add:

-New Super Xserve (with 5 terabytes of internal hard drive space)
-New Enterprise Xserve (with unlimited multiple processors and "Ultra FireWire Enterprise Edition" w/ 50 GBps throughput)
-New iBook (with Apple's new iLife x2 edition) with 10" screen, weighing in at 1 pound
-New Wearable display (think sunglasses) with a microphone on each side (remember the patent) for speech recognition and surround sound headphones
-ApplePC PC compatibility card: put an AMD Opteron processor in your computer w/ up to 512 MB RAM & no fan!
-New Apple Pens (I lost my old one and can't find any new ones)

😛

Yea, Keynote is super compatible. Oh wait, it ISNT compatible if you remotely use it any sort of power user context. Doh, bummer! We all went back to PowerPoint already in my office. I can only imagine that 'Document' or whatever the rumors say it will be called will be the same way.

Besides, why rebuild apps that already exist and work 'well enough'? I really do not understand this logic. Fill the voids that are empty and then go back and rebuild stuff that already works fine later. I'd give back Safari and Keynote to get one viable MS Outlook Exchange compatible mail/calendering client. Then I could finally ditch my damn XP box.

I hope all this new cool stuff comes out but there are basic needs that have to be filled before the mac can explode out of its single digit market presence. I fully believe in Apple and love my macs but I am not blind to the strange decisions they seem to make. Who knows, they must have some super cool business plan up their sleeves! Doesn't seem like it from my view but I am not an exec at Apple.

970's? Tablets? Not likely.

Especially the Tablet thing. Thats just lame.

go home you M$ poo! if you are a PowerPoint "Power User" then you earn that title... what do you really contribute to the world with PP?? get a life!

no one's forcing you to use any apple product, hardware or software... iApps are there to perform as an "easier" and "better" alternative to M$ buggie software... if you want better M$ Outlook / Exchange compatibility then you should whine to M$, NOT Apple - you idiot!

sorry for getting carried away, but this guy is such an idiot I had to flame him!!

hehehe...good point 😛

What exactly is a PowerPoint power user? 😀

I used to hate getting PPTs at my old job. Waste of freakin space and time...except for the funny ones. I much preferred my PDC emails. But I digress....

Geeze, why are you people like this? Someone says something that you dislike and you immediately insult them professionally and personally. Its kind of ridiculous.

Yea, everyone hates PPT, you hated getting them. Bummer, its a common tool of communication, life goes on.

Look, if PowerPoint is a waste as you seem to think it is then you even MORE validate my point. Why does Apple waste time on building Keynote when its (A) 'Waste of freakin space' and (B) A perfectly good waste of freakin space already exists.

Just because I criticize Apple doesn't mean I don't care. Let me get my credentials, yea, Mac users since 1988, apple user since the early IIe days. Keep your 'M$' comments in the closet.

why?? do I need to re-type what I just wrote? ok, for idiot like you I will as its Sat and some free time on my hand >>

"iApps are there to perform as an "easier" and "better" ALTERNATIVE to M$ BUGGIE software"

Its NOT re-inventing the wheel as you like to describe it, but to make it EASIER and BETTER for us MAC users who's sick n' tired of having no choice BUT to use MS's BUGGIEWARE, and facilitate those poor buggers like yourself another option - and if you don't like it, then DON'T use it, but just don't mock it because "Power Users" like yourself are so far up M$'s ass that knows nothing BETTER and ultimately don't deserve anything BETTER!

Dude chill out, I dig my G4 powerbook. I use it religiously however I work in a corporate environment. Not ever Mac user lives the Myth of The True Switcher, the one true job where nobody else matters and there are no established standards.

I do whine to MS, incessantly! They don't care anymore then Apple does. Fact is, Corporate IT lives and dies on Exchange. Exchange is a crappy product, we all know this. Anyone NOT compatible with this product is in for a ****ty time in most corp environments. MS wants this, its Apple's job to fix it and get more users.

MS has no incentive to be kind to Mac users. Apple has EVERY incentive to make the Mac platform as compelling as possible. I know at LEAST 15 people who have wanted to move to a powerbook and ditch their XP laptops but the minute they found out 'No exchange calendaring' they stopped dead in their tracks.

Not every person who wants to use a Mac wants to use Photoshop. Sales folks, biz dev folks, execs, yes, even engineers like me, we love the Mac and what it stands for but in many cases we are dependant and must interact with 'Crappy Buggy Software'.

All I am saying is 'Hey Apple, make me iOutlook so I can friggin keep my meeting schedules straight.'

Geeze, you guys are nuts about this stuff! I dig some of the iApps, I just think if Apple is serious about the Enterprise they need to get serious about corp communications tools.

I'd end this with a pithy insult, but I imagine it'd be lost on you.

Hahaha, ok sure..

I'll let the clients that I interact with 'Hey, look, I know that the PPT I sent you last week by your request did not open for you and or opened and looked like total crap but thats your fault for using Buggy Crappy Software.'

Yea buddy, you betcha. People don't care WHAT it is or IF its buggy, they just want it to work, reliably and cross-platform. You export PPT out of keynote and it barely works half the time.

iApps are fine, Keynote is NOT an iApp, its designed as a PPT killer and it is, except when it comes to interacting with the majority of PPT users on the planet.

I am sure you'll just curse at me again, ignorance is bliss like that.

I repeat: Key Note is there as an ALTERNATIVE for us MAC users to do presentations just like PowerPoint was designed to do. They could of very well not build the import/export function and just let it be a stand alone software, but then that'd be M$ like and don't give you the option, if it does import/export crappy PowerPoint presentations perfectly as you wish, then A] KeyNote IS a buggieware B] it's re-inventing the wheel as you described earlier.

Of course we all know it doesn't do a PERFECT import/export job, and its not a programme designed so that - if so, why not just make a PowerPoint plugin which adds all the better functionalities like transparency for example? because PowerPoint is flawed, yet sadly enough most of the "Power Users" that you INTERACT with are mostly managerical type who has to justify their existence
by doing PowerPoint presentations which most of people fall a sleep to.

To "Think Different" and to achieve the similar goal with a BETTER experience and MORE functionality without all the bug is what Apple stands / renowned for... so maybe its time for the "Power Users" to switch and see the light - and maybe pull other people out of the darkness - us MAC users are LEADERS, not sheep-like FOLLOWERS [i.e. wake your fellow PPT users on this planet UP - there's a better solution!]
