It's all downhill from here.
No, really. What kind of name is "Mactel"? It just sounds stupid. When your computers are going to be even closer to the rest of the market, every little helps. Including a snappy name. This ain't it...
I agree. I think they should just call them Macintosh without anything else. They can then put any chip in it (PPC, Intel x86, amd) without having to change the name.

Otherwise they should stick to the current names. Most people don't link the "Power" from Powermac, Powerbook to the PowerPC anyway. So they can keep on calling it a Powermac even with a x86 in it.

So lame

Ok, when we had the transition from the 680x0 Macs to the PowerPC Macs did we call them MacPows? or MacerPC? No, we refered to them as 68k and PowerPC Macs. Now we just need to call them PowerPC Macs and Intel Macs. THATS IT. Mactel, Macintel, Intelintosh are all incredibly uninspired and un-Apple. Since when has Apple done something so utterly derivative? I thought Apple was all about THINK DIFFERENT. If they are tradmarking this so no one will start using it, fine. But for all of you actually using it, you should be ashamed for copying the old Wintel term. Intel Mac. Thats what you call them when you have to differentiate, seriously folks, its not that hard to figure out.

Man ... this whole thing is becoming nightmareish!

Has Steve lost his way with his apparent determination to commoditize the Mac, to take on Dell, M$, who knows, or cares. I liked Apple the way they were

I can't think how I can be here in a coupla years when www.Macrumors.com is an Intel fanboy site

Mactel, rulz ... Steve, rulz

Think I'll hang around to what the train wreck that will be PPC sales, I want to see Steve sweat. I want to see the effect when Longhorn takes off its gloves

MacTel ... Think really different!

...then just have yourself an involutary heave...

hhhhhhahaaahaha

I'm sorry but thats funny. I know that apple files for many names for trademarks, so this might never see the light of day, but its still funny. :D

That there would be a Lanham Act violation. They've got to use it or lose it.

I, and it seems several others, weren't aware of this.

This sucks.

This is more than just a chip change.

All there's left to pray for now is it's for Apples...upcoming...telephone...whatever...

heh. I was thinking the same thing.

Seems like it just takes a little time to change the sugar in the kool-aid before everything will be wonderful again...

Trademark Squatting

Sounds like trademark squatting. Is that allowed?

Actually it's not squatting at all. You can trademark internal names and Mac's with Intel Inside already exist and have for sometime.

Basically Apple does not want to worry about another stupid Tiger or Apple lawsuit.

Whatever!

Let's call them iMacs

God, I hope Apple doesn't use that name for the Intel based Macs...

But what can they call 'em?

G6? Na, that'll be assuming the next PowerPC.... :(

Maybe easier for tech supprt:
"What kinda Mac do you own? A normal Mac or a MacTel?"

I think Apple will have a tough time naming the future Macs.

How about calling them iMacs? Trust me when Apple releases the Intel based Macs, we (the consumers) will be calling them the "new" Macs or the new polka dotted Macs or big-ass 25" screen iMacs or whatever they look like. What did the normal person (not us here) call the G3 iMac, G4 iMac and G5 iMac?

When my sister and brother-inlaw bought their new G5 iMac they were upset that couldn't get one that looked like my mothers G4. And I've been told that alot of consumers felt the same way.

So maybe the next generation iMac will be a compo between the two.

However, I bet they remove the "Power" from the Professional line, but who knows maybe the Professional line with have Power PC's in them.

Whatever!

Would you folks just chill out. They are obviously protecting the name from any use; it will never see the light of day.

That's my guess too: prevent anyone from using the term (since a lot of people will be confused by the switch, i.e. non-tech people).

I'd like Apple to trademark all variations too (such as "Macintel"), so that leechers (i.e. Dell, Microsoft, etc) can't take them.

they are saving 'mactel' as a branding name for when they begin releasing mac clones again!

god I hope I'm wrong... ;)

Well, maybe they are getting ready to launch an awesome telephone service?
Remember iPhone rumors?! Maybe it's not Mac+Intel... but MacTelephone?

A new interface, program, or device/service?
I agree and think the timing of this trademark with the Intel announcement is just a ruse to get people to think it has something to do with Intel.

MacTel will be the telecommunications service (phone, data, video) that runs on some high-end iPods and on all MacPods and PowerPods.

It's all so clear.

:D

lucky these guys are moving

http://www.mactel.com/

I don't know but i remember reading somewhere that you can't register a doman thats a trademark, or as such the company that owns that trademark has first dibbs, What happens if that person owned the doman when the trademark was filed ?!

How about Apple, or Mac...those are nice names

Seriously, why is there any naming at all going on?

Ever heard of a Delltel, Sontel, Intony, Comcraptel, Gatewel, or e-Machel?

No? That's because every time you put an Intel processor in a computer, its not a requirement to dream up some reject concatenation to label it!

How about Powerbook? Thats a nice one.

I'll catch you later, I have to go put a new video card in my HPel.

it's because they are all called wintels! And now that we will soon have mac os on intel instead of windows, people will call them macintels or mactels or whatever...

First place I saw Macintel was on apple.ars infinte loop -- a guy named dannyzumwalt posted it and i thought it was genius.

How about Intac? Which sounds almost like "intact," which they could use in marketing..."Sure the CPU is different, but the experience is still Intac!"

...Or not.

I, and it seems several others, weren't aware of this.

It's a 1(b) application which means they have a "bona fide intention" to use the mark. If they already had it in use somewhere it would be a 1(a).

What that means, is Apple still have the option of abandoning the mark if they think of a better name or change their minds about using it.

For a similar example, Apple put in applications for Zeroconf and Opentalk before finally deciding to use Bonjour as the replacement name for Rendezvous.

In other news, Apple have in the past week also filed for the mark "Numbers", for computer software. Maybe a spreadsheet companion for Pages is finally on the way.

Merger

This just makes me think again about Bob Cringely's article last week. The possibilities of a merger with Intel.

It may sound a little bit odd, but what he wrote has some sense, specially because of the fact that everyone seems to be echoing in this and other forums; and that is the Osborne effect. An announcement of this kind so early in the development could effectivelly kill Macintosh sales.

Unless of course, they don't care about loosing computer and laptop sales, which I regard as highly doubtful.

Note: Please forgive me for any bad grammar/spelling, I'm not a native english speaker so I try and do my best at it (Yes, Cocoa apps have spelling integrated, but I'm writing from my Windows based PC at work and it's kind of awkard to write in Word and then copying/pasting it in IE, sorry).

They very well could just use G6....the G doesn't neccesarily mean its a PowerPC. Of course, the issue is the Pontiac G6, Apple may not be able to use it for a processor name (and jumping to G7 is silly)

I always thought Wintel was a derogatory term invented by Mac users, is MacTel supposed to be a compliment?

Wintel users say "wintel." Its worthy of their creativity.

Anyway, MacTel is a telecommunications service, not an Intel reference.
