A23** is used on the M1 MBA and MBP that were released in 2020, so I think A26** could just signify that these are 2022 releases.Well A24** is used on all the M1* devices. Does this suggest M2?

Agree. Drop “air” completely - save for AirPods I suppose. We had this occurance in iPads and they seemed to do fine.
”I can buy an A14 iPad Air? 14 is more than 12…or I can buy an A12z iPad Pro.“ Perhaps we will rely on product names more this generation? MacBook Pro with an m1pro will be faster than a regular MacBook with m2, type thang ? Perhaps this is the time they clean up their product Names and remove the air monicker
I'm a big fan of the utility of the Mac Mini, but it has never really been event-worthy.
Thats a fair point. We had this occurance in iPads and they seemed to do fine.

as much as it hurts, I think you are rightThe model numbers don't really say anything about what hardware is in them.
Since we can expect that they would file something like this well in advance (sometimes there's 6 months between filing and release) I think this confirms my hypothesis that won't see any new machines before WWDC.
Plus, and I keep saying this, and might as well be wrong with it: M2 will be based on A16, not A15. So it's unlikely they would release it before they released the new iPhone with the A16. Also releasing an M2 machine the same time they release the biggest M1s doesn't make sense.
So, I stick by it: iMac 27(+?) with M1 Pro, Max and 2Max (Extreme?) aka Jade-2C Die at WWDC, plus a ... Mac Mini Pro / Mac Pro Mini, whatever it'll be, but I'll bet a Mac Mini Pro without the 2Max. Then with or possibly after the new iPhones we'll see the new M2, A16 based MacBook (Air?). Last time they dropped the A15 iPad Mini alongside the new iPhones. Wouldn't be too bad to bring a nice and affordable consumer focused Laptop this time around.
And no, we will not see annual updates to any Mac. They haven't even done that when intel basically provided drop in replacements year on year. The market just isn't there for those (at least not compared to apple's other markets).
Apple typically files new products in the database, as required by law, near a product launch.
Apple occasionally registers devices with the EEC several months in advance, so this filing isn't a guarantee that we'll see three new Macs at the spring Apple Event.
Perhaps the worthiness revolves around something to show that is tangibly different. There are abundant rumors of a brand new case, probably thinner, possibly some new colors, possibly 2-tone. Mini case has largely been the same for- what- about 10-12 years now?
Perhaps the worthiness revolves around profitability for Apple? Mini has generally been priced down at the low end- the "bargain" zone if there can be such a thing in Appleland. However, this is the higher end, higher spec Mini... and rumors going back many months have it getting PRO & MAX... which should come with PRO & MAX-type prices... which should mean Apple gets their premium too. Thus, there can be plenty of profit motivation to shine a bright light on this device... the first of the desktops to get M1 PRO & MAX power.
A little later, Apple can do it again with an iMac perhaps getting the rumored DUO and then again with Mac Pro Jr or whatever getting the rumored QUAD. Or perhaps either of those getting M2 PRO & MAX, DUO or QUAD?
So between a significantly new shell and latest & greatest "guts" (AND the profitability likely to come from pricing it accordingly), this Mini certainly can be rationalized that it should get a good slice of a "show & tell" event.
Besides, if iMac "bigger" is actually delayed, what else do they have to show at this event? There was a rumor a few days ago that implied it could be only a smaller iPhone and a new iPad. Nobody seems to buy an event for only those 2 things... especially when the PRO & MAX Mini was rumored hard to launch WITH the MBpros months ago. Conceptually, these have been ready since then. Perhaps the first deliveries will have a bit of storage dust on them where they've been sitting on a shelf since the Fall?
It's not a knock - the Mac Mini just isn't a show-stealer, even with a redesign. They just don't sell that many. If Apple had a monitor they could sell with it that might change things, but at the moment it continues to play second-fiddle to the iMac. That's not a knock either - the iMac is the reference Apple desktop computer.
Always been my impression as well. Set the diehards aside and most consumers opt for the iMac, while a lot of businesses opt for the Mini. And the businesses would obviously be more interested in utility than looks.I always thought that they sold more mini because they have a lower entry cost and that a lot of companies buy them to use as servers. They are attractive in that you can keep your monitors when you upgrade your computer but the iMac is a very neat and tidy package.
“it would be strange to see MBA with M2, and then iMac with M1 Pro/Max in the same release.”Most likely. Apple would be releasing new processors each year, just like they do with the iPhone. Sometimes, there will be some small improvements, but other times we can see more substantial redesign of the silicon with improved architecture. Previously, Apple had to rely on Intel which conditioned when new Macs could be released. Now Apple could decide its own refresh cycles. I suspect that M2 will be 10% more powerful than M1 in CPU and 20% in GPU performance. In any case, it would be strange to see MBA with M2, and then iMac with M1 Pro/Max in the same release.
Another alternatives is that we see iMac and MacMini with M1/Pro and a new Mac Pro with 2 and 4 CPU M1 Max configurations, and then push the M2 chips for later in 2022, when all Macs are duly upgraded to first gen Apple silicon. This makes most sense. MBA with M1 does not need refresh currently while these other Macs need it more urgently as they are running on Intel.
Not so soon after the MacBook Pro. The M1 Pro and Max are still new.Looking forward to see what we get as far as new Apple Macs go. Hopefully Macs with a new M2 (Pro) or (Max) processor.
that could mean Macbook Air, iMac, Mac MiniWell, there actually is some small info on the computers.
One of them (A2681) is said to be a "portable personal computer" (read "laptop"), and other two are just "personal computers" (read "desktop").View attachment 1958689

Not any stranger than the iPad Air having a14 and the Pro having a12Z.
M2 devices will definitely ship before the Mac Pro which is M1 based.
Could be low end and high end miniUsually the mini only has 1 model number though. The other could be the 27" coloured iMac.
Who says they can’t release an M2 before an M1? Everyone knows the Mac Pro is getting updated last and it’s going to be M1. It’s only a matter of which M2 Macs come out before that, not if.Those are entirely different situations.
The Mac lineup is a well publicized 2 year architecture transition. The iPad Air is scheduled refresh of an existing product.
There was never any legit rumor of that.I haven’t been following the news lately, but last year there were some talks about a 15” or 16” MacBook Air (again… i know… ?)
Was there any update on that? Is there a marginal hope that we will get a big screen MacBook under 2000$?
The MacBook Pro is redesigned too compared to the current one.My guess is it is the lower end 14" MacBook Pro + 2 models of Mac mini....if the MacBook Pro is coming now, it suspect it may still retain the M1...seems odd to debut an M2 in that machine and not the redesigned MacBook Air.

I understand wanting to take a stand on principle, and there may be some specific apps that you are waiting for, still it looks like around 68% of apps have been recompiled for AS.M1, M2... who cares. I'm still waiting for key software vendors to properly update their software to accommodate Apple Silicon, so I can use my M1 Max effectively, without running through a Rosetta emulation. I refuse to install Rosetta on a matter of principle.
Come on, guys, it's 2022 already. It can't be that hard, surely.
It is likely that the M2 will use the A15 cores from the iPhone 13 so it could launch before the next iPhone.I haven't been following the rumours, but a M2 chip released before the iPhone? I personally can't see that happening. But who knows... not me.
One cause is that Covid infections impacted production of basic machinery used in chip production and also directly in chip production. That is not just main CPU/SOC chips like the M1 but in many support chips like memory controllers, power supplies, i/o chips. There has been a chain reaction of delayed deliveries. It’s like in a freeway when a car slows down and cars behind it slow down more and soon you have a traffic backup. It takes a while for that congestion to work it’s way through the system.Apple said 2 years to transition but that was before the chip shortage hit pretty much every industry, especially computers.
I don't know if I have heard or seen an actual explanation of what caused the chip shortage in the first place and why it has lasted for over a year. I have guesses why it lasted but not why it happened in the first place.
You are spot on there for everything but the iPad line.Agree. Drop “air” completely - save for AirPods I suppose.
iPad mini + iPad + iPad Pro
MacBook + MacBook Pro
Mac mini + iMac + Mac Pro
Seems easily digestible, distinguishable nomenclature. The name, alone, sets expectations of the device capabilities.
It's unlikely that Apple would accelerate any new AS SoC release before other products using M1 Pro/M1 Max are out the door.It is likely that the M2 will use the A15 cores from the iPhone 13 so it could launch before the next iPhone.
