Right now I think the problem is going to be the heat; with the integrated chip, my machine's CPU will reach temps 0f 95 C when I'm pushing it. Putting a dedicated chip in there would really heat things up.

Plus they like making that extra 600 bucks -_-

Steve said cooling wasn't necessary as long as it looks nice.

I hope these don't have the same low color gamut screens that the MacBook Air's have.

And again, Apple would never give you better graphics cards on a laptop in lieu of an optical drive because they would rather just make it thinner. Same with a better battery. I know you people like thinking these wonderful "oh man, with the optical drive gone, I can...!" fantasies, but I hate to break it to you; without the optical drive, the MacBook Pro will be much like the new Mac mini, vacantly lacking a drive where you could easily fit one in even still (even on the model with the AMD Radeon graphics). Still though, it's a nice pipe dream. While we're at it, let's wish for bipartisanship and maybe a better economy! I'm sure Steve will deliver.

I very much disagree. You do realize that the dvd drive is half the size of the 15" mobo? That's a lot of space. Lets just assume though for a minute that the GPU takes up 1/4 of the DVD drive's size, which i doesn't (much smaller), they'll still have a ton of space. Lets also assume they add an ssd 1/2 of optical drive. So you have 1/4 left. Shrink down the batter, which they will, ditch some of the ports (save some space on mobo). My guess is they might ditch the fw800, and possibly the ethernet. But I wouldn't be surprised if they keep the same ports. Personally, I wish they'd just have 1 usb port, i hardly ever use any of mine on my imac. also, once 3rd parties come out w/ TB hubs, I think they for sure can take off ethernet, 1 usb, and fw800.

Point being, in the 15" MBA/Slimmed down MBP, I expect to see discrete graphics, upgradeability to 8GB Ram... not sure if that will be replaceable or not, and possibly slightly less battery life.

To all the people who think hanging a bunch of external devices off your MBA is an acceptable solution, may I remind you of something?

Funny how what used to be scoffed at is suddenly embraced, just because The Steve says so.

I think you're over exaggerating it a little bit :)

Apple would never lower their battery life. 5 hours on the Air is teh lowest they will go. 7 hours for any other is their staple.

As strong of a selling point it (they always dedicate a slide to it when they announce something), lowering the battery life takes away one of the key features people consider when getting a MacBook Pro.

Ask anybody, "Why did you get a MBP?"

"I like the fact that the battery lasts all day."

Just go to any college or university where a lot of students have MBs. You don't have the luxury of sitting down and actually plugging in to charge. Battery life, build quality, and the OS are the key features people look at when choosing M products (notebooks anyway).

Definitely does for me. Ever since the Macbook I first got, the convenience and power savings of good battery life was a big factor for me. I mostly run my laptops without them being plugged in. If a thunderstorm comes rolling in, I don't even pause to think twice.

But once I'm on a machine that I can use almost all night without plugging in, my power habits change considerably. Even more so for the iPad. It was not that way with my Gateway laptop.

Exactly. I don't make much use of it now (summer break so I just hang out around the house; maybe a friend's house or Starbucks once in a while) but when I'm spending the day on campus and have 3 lectures per day, I don't have time to simply sit down and charge my laptop.

Even if I don't use the laptop in the lecture (science major so I hardly will), I'll be able to do whatever I want, wherever I want between classes and while eating.

It was a lot easier last semester when I lived on campus because I could simply go back to my room and rest, however, this time I don't have that luxury.

The sub 5 hours stopped me from getting an upgraded MBA (which I so very wanted). After some rational thought though, I realized that the Pro (which is cheaper) is upgradable and will ultimately last me a lot longer than the air.

When I first heard that Apple were going to be removing the optical disk drives I wasn't too keen on the idea, but I'm gradually starting to come round to the idea. When I think of how often I actually used the ODD it wont be that much of a loss. My only problem is at the minute I have no way of purchasing anything from the App Store or iTunes as I have no debit or credit cards.

I can buy an external ODD and connect to my Airport Extreme, it's just a bit of shame that I'll have to move myself from my bedroom to my living room to use it lol.

Can't you just go out and buy some iTunes cards?  :D

The sooner they delete the optical drive the better. I have an ultralight, thin, external optical drive that works perfectly for the few times I need it. There's no longer a need for it to be built into the laptop, as least for my usage.

Agreed. I never use it anymore.

Yes, yes I could. lol. Tbh I never really thought of that. Just goes to show there's a work around for everything.

You can also get prepaid debit/credit cards using cash. Completely untraceable if that's what you're in to.

I'm pretty stoked to see how this plays out. Part of me thinks this is the new 'MacBook' since we have Pro and Air it seems strange not to have a MacBook.

Hi All,
Long time reader first time poster
Fat Mac! if it was fatter had all the connections ,esata ,CF card reader etc ,most powerful processor i would be happy.
Apple could give us the the choice of optical drive or second SSD/HD in the space that the optical drive takes up, of course you can do this yourself but they are missing a trick here.

This is really bothering me and I just have to ask:

Where is this coming from? I can't find a September MBP release date anywhere... did I miss something? Can somebody link me to some confirmation that Apple will release new MBPs next month? (I need a new laptop!)
