Apple Fitness+ Appears to Be Incompatible With AirPlay

But Apple would never half-bake something on Apple TV 😂
In this case they kinda did it. On iphone, in the Fitness app, you can see your full history of all fitness+ workouts and any other workouts you’ve done on your own using just the apple watch. On iPad or Apple TV, although the Fitness app can use your Fitness+ workout history to proactively show you new workouts similar to what you’ve done before it won’t let you actually see your full history like the iphone app does.

100% agreement.

I did purchase the Apple TV for Fitness+ and it absolutely felt like a slap in the face. It's especially aggravating because my daughter says the iPhone version of the app has more features than the Apple TV one (something about saving workouts?).
Your daughter is right. The Fitness app on iphone lets you see the full history of all the workouts you’ve done before, both the ones using fitness+ and the ones done on your own using just the apple watch. The Fitness app on iPad and Apple TV can only use your Fitness+ workout history proactively to recommend new workouts similar to the ones you already did, but it won’t let you actually see your full workout history like it does on the iphone.

Only got my subscription in the last hour and very disappointed seeing this thread about mirroring to the tv. I was hoping there was an app I could download to my fire stick in the same way as Apple TV+

14.4 just got released. Can someone confirm whether or not it solves the problem?

I upgraded my phone and Apple TV. With screen mirroring the screen on the TV still goes black once the workout starts. However, when attempting to AirPlay from within the workout I am allowed to select my Samsung TV, which I don't think I could do before. But, I get an error on the phone when trying to make the Airplay connection.

-- EDIT --

Nah - it's the same as before. I was just confused. So, no progress at all.

nope. It doesn’t fix anything. Judging by how casting to a tv fails selectively only to/from certain devices but not others and by Apple’s absolute silence on the matter despite all the grousing, I think this was done intentionally and is not a bug.

Not sure if this confirms Airplay disabling is deliberate or not but if you download a Apple Fitness workout to the iPhone, turn off WiFi and Bluetooth (pop up confirms watch is not connected) then play the video via Apple AV Lightning Adapter to TV it’s still audio only.

what confirms airplay disabling is deliberate is Apple’s silence despite the complaints, and the fact that they did it selectively: wireless airplay only works if you’re casting to a 4th or 5th gen apple tv (which is useless, since those apple tv boxes actually can run the Fitness app natively), but not to any other devices including earlier models of apple’s own apple tv, and casting with an HDMI adapter and cable only works from devices with a USB-C port (3rd and 4th gen ipad pro, 2020 ipad air), but not from devices with a lightning port (all other ipads and all iphones).

It reminds me of when Netflix had disabled AirPlay through the iOS app for “technical” reasons. So is Apple doing the same within the Fitness app or just putting DRM on the all the full workout videos?

This does seem very silly by Apple. I don’t want to work out whilst straining my neck to look at an iPad

Apple Fitness would have been the one and only reason why I would have subscribed to Apple one. I guess I won’t be bothering

Apple is worse. Netflix disabled wireless AirPlay, but they still let you cast their videos to a tv using an HDMI dongle and cable. Apple disabled both ways of casting (though they only did it specifically for the Fitness+ videos, not for everything else). It doesn’t seem to be related to DRM, if it were they’d have to disable airplay for everything, not just Fitness+.

Glad 14.5 update will let us use airplay 2 for fitness+
Too bad 3rd gen and earlier Apple TV boxes are only compatible with AirPlay 1. They're still out of the question even with this update. However, the article posted about it here on Macrumors does clarify a bit the reason for this limitation: it is indeed related to the Apple Watch metrics overlay that's displayed during the workout videos (the article says smart tvs will now be able to get the video, but still won't get the Apple Watch metrics overlay).

14.5 & Watch Os 7.4 it doesn’t work with Apple’s original HDMI lightning connector, Still sound on a black screen.
At least now we know why: it must be because of the metrics overlay. According to macrumor's article today, the smart tvs will now get the workout video image, but still without the AW metrics overlay.

Still won’t let me airplay on my airplay 2 TVs
Not yet. The update that will fix that is iOS/iPadOS 14.5, but it hasn’t been released yet. It’s in beta (and only for developers right now, not even public beta yet).

Yes I’m running iOS 14.5 and watch os 7.4 and it’s still not working

I’ve tried twice to do a workout using my iPad. It’s just not worth it. and is probably prime to injury Straining my neck to look at a tiny screen as I try and do the exercises.
I won’t be paying for it until they allow it to work on the tv. So that rules our Apple one too

In case anyone on this thread hasn't seen the announcement: https://www.macrumors.com/2021/02/01/apple-fitness-plus-airplay-2-support/

With the watchOS 7.4 and iOS 14.5 betas, Apple is adding AirPlay 2 support to the Apple Fitness+ app, which is a feature that Apple Fitness+ users have been hoping for.

Apple-fitness-plus-feature.jpg

As noted by TechCrunch, Apple Fitness+ workouts will be able to be streamed to AirPlay 2-compatible television sets from an iPhone or iPad, allowing workouts to be viewed on a larger screen by those who do not have an Apple TV.

Audio and video will be able to be sent to an AirPlay 2-enabled TV or set-top box, but Apple Watch metrics will not be able to be displayed on the screen.

Activity rings, workout time remaining, calories burned, and burn bars will not show up on the television set over AirPlay 2 and will instead need to be viewed on the connected iPhone or iPad, but this should be a welcome change for those who want to be able to watch Apple Fitness+ workouts on a larger screen.

The optimal way to use Apple Fitness+ is with an Apple TV as the service is built into the Fitness app on the Apple TV, but there are many people out there with an AirPlay-compatible TV and no Apple TV set-top box to use with it.

I felt strongly that they would address this, and they are.

They will starting with iOS/iPadOS 14.5, which is still in beta for now.

Does that allow screen mirroring? I can’t work out if my tv has airplay or not, but I can mirror from the iPad to fire stick using a third party app on the stick
