Last week, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple Fitness+ was "under review," and now he has elaborated on the future of the workout service.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said that Apple Fitness+ may be merged into a broader new Apple Health+ service launching next year. If so, he said that Apple Fitness+ would no longer be available as a standalone subscription service.

Apple Health+ will also feature an AI-based health coach that offers nutrition planning and medical suggestions, according to Gurman's previous reporting.

Apple Fitness+ launched in 2020. The service offers a library of trainer-led workout and meditation videos in Apple's Fitness app, across the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. In the U.S., the service costs $9.99 per month or $79.99 per year.

Apple Fitness+ is also available as part of the Apple One Premier bundle, with U.S. pricing set at $37.95 per month. Gurman said there is a possibility that Apple will start letting customers pick and choose the services they want in an Apple One bundle in the future, and this might result in Apple Fitness+ remaining available as a standalone service.

If Apple wants to compete in the services market, they need to start taking their services more seriously. They throw things onto the market and then never look at them again. These products require continuous development and evolution, even independent of major system updates. Since the release of Fitness+, we’ve seen only a handful of small improvements to the app, but nothing substantial. A new minor feature every other major iOS update just isn’t enough.

I get it for free via my health insurance, and my my wife and I often do the Yoga classes to supplement our physical yoga classes. Anyway, it seems to be turning into an advertisement for Apple Music, as of the last few days, when logging in it was a huge photo of Taylor Swift. Several classes I've done focus on particular just-released album and keep slipping song names and artists it into the class, and while it's supposed to look natural, t's pretty obvious and obnoxious.

If they start shoehorning AI into it, I'll just quit it altogether. We have Glo, too, which while it's not polished, has much more challenging classes. Fitness+ seems to focus on beginners and never advances..and why doesn't it list levels?! Yoga only has slow or energetic flows.

The middle picture in the above article is Dice. Go watch his previous classes on Glo, and then now on Fitness+, and see the difference. It's huge.

Could these companies PLEASE stop turning every godforsaken thing into a subscription or tiered service? No one is asking for any of this!
I agree. However, life itself, is a "subscription". We all pay a monthly rental fee(subscription), or real estate taxes(subscription) to pay for schools, roadways, police & fire. Getting a consumer digital membership to your grocery store is also a form of subscription. Paying monthly dues for a gym, library, Girl Scouts, social club, etc. are also subscriptions. Health insurance, home insurance, vehicle insurance is a form of subscription too.
Kind'a depressing to think like this but....life is a giant subscription!:)

Same here. Unfortunately, my remaining trial of Fitness+ has ended, so I’m currently using Nike Training Club. Former trainer Betina and many current trainers, including Jenn Lau, Cory, and Nez, are available on the Nike apps. Cory provides the audio runs on Nike Run Club.

I have a different session on Fitness+ for running (treadmill), outdoor time for walking, strength training, HIIT, core exercises, and yoga as a cooldown. I also enjoy the themed holiday and music workouts. I’ll definitely miss it because Nike Training Club, Headspace, and Nike Run Club don’t offer holiday-themed workouts. However, I can still play my own holiday playlist or favourite music from Apple Music while watching the video.

What happens if I stop paying? 😉

Hopefully they’ll just scrap it completely. I’m so tired of these lazy services trying to convince people to pay for subscription for everything. There are tons of free and better workouts on YouTube. If they truly want to convince people to pay, they have to offer something more customised. Perhaps a program that depends on the person progress. Depending on the goal, workouts that adjust. For example if the goal is endurance depending on rest heart rate evolution over time workouts could be adjusted. If the goal is hypertrophic the camera could track body shape and estimate composition and evolve workouts accordingly. Workouts should also account for the fact that people quite often prefer going to gym, so just add machines, dumbbells and barbells to the mix.

I used AF for two years (mainly rowing workouts and mindfulness). I found it good value for money - integration with Apple Watch is a big plus (I had an ipad clamp on my machine), and the rowing trainers were informally graded to easy/medium/hard (by choice of instructor - it wasn't explicit). Switched exercise recently and got a gym membership for work so I stopped using AF, but it's a genuinely good service in my experience.

I really like Fitness+ but it's remained (mostly) curiously underdeveloped since launch.

Where are graded exercises, fitness programmes etc.?

Combining it into a Health+ service makes a load of sense.

Hopefully though as an no brainer added extra ($3.99 or $4.99 extra per month) because Health+ might be useful to those who have other health apps.

Whilst we're at at - hopefully it'll be an opportunity to roll the fitness app into either the watch app or the health app, as it's slightly strange that there are three destinations to check up on your health (Health, Fitness and on the Watch itself).

I literally started my free trial this week and I’m finding it enjoyable so far. Seems good for bad weather days/when I don’t feel like going to the gym. Might be the only one of the Apple services I could see myself using regularly and now I learn it’s future is uncertain lol

Apple has several services they have sunk money into, but not nearly enough to make them compelling. Do something properly or not at all. Fitness+ has potential as there are no overwhelming alternatives, unlike Apple Maps for example, which is unlikely to ever compete with Google Maps.

The problem with dropping services when they are not working out, is people don't bother with that companies services until they know they are successful, which helps make failure more likely in the future. See Google for that. They try so many things and drop most of them, so it is rarely worth getting involved early on.

Sadly Apple fitness is still not available globally, so I haven’t even been able to try this service. More customisation with Apple One sounds interesting but Apple needs to make their services available more globally in English for those that don’t require the service in their mother tongue.

I like fitness+. Currently it is only a gap filler for me though. Every now and then i'll do a HIIT or yoga training, depending on my leftover energy for the week.

But would not want to pay more for it, just because they want to bundle it...

I tried out Fitness+ some time ago as part of a free trial deal, and it’s just not my thing at all. The fake perkiness of the instructors, the weird Home Shopping Network vibe of the studios - it’s all just a bit off somehow. I doubt that shoehorning AI into it will make it more attractive to me.

Whats your problem? I use AF several times a week and I like it.
If you are frustrated with such services then you have other problems.

Fitness+ has a lot of value that's not being extracted by the current leadership. It needs a new head. The app is so poorly organized and the exercises are too repetitive.
