I would imagine that they will fix it eventually. What I don't like is how they pretend to be perfect. I'm sure they are aware of the issue...

I must have missed something somewhere. Exactly when did they ever pretend to be perfect? That's obviously a personal perception of an expectation.

She's been off contract for years but doesn't feel like spending another $200-$300 bucks on a phone. Same with the iPad 2. It's more than adequate for her needs and spending another $400-$500 for a new iPad to get FaceTime is crazy.

Once again, we all have multiple choices to make every day. The world will move on with or without us. A very popular phrase many years ago was 'life is a rat race'. It always has been and always will be. We either choose to keep up and stand a chance of winning, or we choose to drop out and loose.

If you roll something out into production (on the server side) that breaks a significant chunk of Apple devices in the world, you roll back the change. Then you spend time finding the bug.

Precisely. Apple just doesn't get it. Too much Microsoft-like engineer culture?

The responses here about FT and iOS6 are tremendously funny. I cannot confirm it but I'm willing to bet more than half of the people here hating on Apple about this FT issue don't even use it or barely have in the past. In a world of bigger issues in Tech people are getting worked up over a small app in iOS when the truth is many people use Skype instead because it's universal.

It's really time users running iOS 6, update to iOS 7.

What for? To slow down the iPad 2 that we bought for my in-laws and that used to work fine?

I have always been an iOS early adopter, but even with my iPad 3 and iPhone 4S, I am regretting very much that I updated. Lots of little things that are broken by design, such as stopping a timer or alarm with a tap instead of a swipe (try tapping with your little finger when using the iPhone as a cooking timer). Different for the purpose of being different, not for being better.

My main "proof" that iOS 7 is less intuitive than iOS 6 is the fact that my daughter could use the iOS 6 iPad when she was one year old (I have videos to prove it). She could unlock the device, scroll to the page with her favorite app and launch it. Now as a 2-year-old, she can't use the iOS 7 iPad anymore without help. Now she can't unlock the iPad anymore, and when she scrolls, half the time the notification and control center keep coming up (yes, I know, I can disable them, but then iOS 7 becomes practically obsolete, except for the new design and slower performance). But anyway, that is a discussion that has happened here many times. I am just quite sick of the elitists who act like there is no reason not to upgrade. As I see it, the best argument right now for an upgrade is a bugfix to Facetime, and that is a rather stupid argument for an OS update.

For an iPad 2, iOS 6 is the best OS. Period. Deal with it. I remember well how iOS 5 practically killed my first gen iPad, and I refuse to go through the same BS again.

Apple must be getting things ready for future products and due to some aggressive timelines, they didn't test iOS 6. I would like to see FaceTime on my iWatch.

That's assuming the change is something that can be rolled back. I suspect the issue here is nothing more than a problem with an expired root certificate, and iOS 7 includes its replacement. In that case rolling back may simply not be possible.

It's really time users running iOS 6, update to iOS 7.

Who are you to tell me what I should upgrade to? iOS 6 is working perfectly fine for me on my iPad 3. I have no desire to put that crap operating system iOS 7 on it. People should not be forced to upgrade to anything! If it works for them, that is all that matters.

It got an update to iOS 6 (and bug fixes through February 2014). A lot of people didn't think it would make it that far. It only has 256MB RAM, and no device supported by iOS 7 has less than 512MB of RAM.

The original iPad has similar hardware and runs quite a bit faster, but was dropped at iOS 5.1.1.

Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. I don't want iOS 7 on it, I just want the features to keep working, for a normal amount of time - and seeing as it's not even a year out of production, I think that's fairly reasonable.

The fact is something worked one day, then didnt the next. I'm not going to be forced to upgrade to a version of iOS that makes my device run slower (10-20% slower) just to get that feature back. It's definitely not a "technical" issue, as FT is working on iOS 6.1.5/6.1.6 devices.

He was making a general statement and it was not directed at you. Calm down.

On the other hand, "you're holding it wrong" was a pretty arrogant response to Antennagate.

Not always - if they role back maybe IOS7.1.1 FaceTime may break as there could be adjustment in the protocol - iOS 7 may not have the problem as it's compatible while ios7.1.1 has to have the improvements maybe? It's too late to pull an OS back so they just have to fix what hey got!

How very thoughtful and considerate of Apple to break/scupper FT for millions of iOS6 users right on the Easter holidays when we were clearly too busy eating chocolate eggs to waste time connecting with close family members who live far away.

Apple is a forward moving company. I don't expect them to support hardware that's beyond 3 years old. However, if they continue to sell a product with features no longer supported/working, then they need to update this information before selling it.

Considering there was multiple stuff broken over the week (FaceTime, Apple TV 1 not connecting to iTunes), most of which was fixed already, I don't see any reason that they won't fix this as well.
It seems that in order to fix this, Apple is pushing out client updates and not just fixing it within the FT-service itself.

For devices running iOS6, a client update would mean an upgrade to iOS 7.1.1 as that is the only update officially available. The way Apple handles iOS upgrades, it is simply not possible to upgrade to anything less than the newest version of the OS.

Likely the iPod4 will see an iOS 6.1.7 update as it doesn't support iOS7. but similar to the SSL bug, that release will not be available on other devices.

iOS6 SLA:
"Apple and its licensors reserve the right to change, suspend, remove, or disable access to any Services at any time without notice. In no event will Apple be liable for the removal of or disabling of access to any such Services. Apple may also impose limits on the use of or access to certain Services, in any case and without notice or liability."

Something to keep in mind next time Apple introduces something Magical...

My wife uses FT almost daily and it's frustrating that it hasn't worked on her iPhone or iPad in days. She's still on iOS 6 and doesn't want to upgrade to iOS 7 since she has an iPhone 4 and an iPad 2. I think upgrading will just slow her devices down even more than they already are.
I'm on an iPhone 4 and iPad 2 with iOS7 and it's better than iOS6.

As an iPod Touch 4 owner, this really sucks. The iPT4 never got an upgrade to iOS 7, and was heavily marketed as an inexpensive way to FaceTime. Thanks, Apple!
I also have an IPT4. When it wouldn't take iOS7 I moved it to a secondary role and got a new device for front line duty. It doesn't bother me because it's four years old, I don't expect it to run everything forever.

You remind me of a friend of mine that's pi$$ed because Microsoft won't support his XP box. Let it go dude.

yes the sit on your hands method apple implements really is the best by far.

considering facetime needs an apple id (ie an email address) for signup and login they could you know email the people affected.

An email to their customers, (they have their emails for their iTunes account) apologising to their customers for the inconvenience, and an assurance that engineers are working on it?

I was hoping that Apple would be more forthcoming with this. Upgrade is not a fix, it's a workaround. It was working fine previously, so why not now. At least tell us why it's not working. My devices are up to date - iOS 7.1.1 but my parents' iphone isn't. Since they don't live near where I am, I can't check on their phone. Facetime is definitely not working because every time we tried to call each other, it won't connect although it says 'connecting ..'. Upgrade is a chore, especially for older folks who had never use computers in their life. It's easier said than done.

:apple:: fix this!

Upgrade to iOS 7.

I'm on an iPhone 4 and iPad 2 with iOS7 and it's better than iOS6.

The benchmark tests posted here a couple months ago indicated otherwise.

I did upgrade a couple iPads in our office to iOS7 to evaluate. It was a slow, laggy, unreliable, obnoxious, and garish text adventure and turned the iPad from a professional peripheral into a childs toy. I replaced them with iOS6 models.

...If iOS 8 is a marked improvement in both functionality and aesthetics over 7, I'll upgrade our iPads, but if Apple continues with this atrocious UI, they'll do so without our support and we'll look into other suppliers going forward.
