I hope that Apple fixes this, but I can see why it is such low priority. Only iPod Touch 4th gen users have a FaceTime capable device and are stuck on iOS 6.

It got an update to iOS 6 (and bug fixes through February 2014). A lot of people didn't think it would make it that far. It only has 256MB RAM, and no device supported by iOS 7 has less than 512MB of RAM.

The original iPad has similar hardware and runs quite a bit faster, but was dropped at iOS 5.1.1.

i hear your pain....just get iPod touch 5

All these latest outages remind me at the beginning of all those messaging services. Quite unusual to see them coming again.

Apple's Fix For FaceTime??

FaceTime used to be a secure form of communications. Maybe the NSA made Apple build them a "BackDoor" into this and that is why Apple felt it needed to screw with something that was working JUST FINE!

Just A Thought!

Who are you to tell me what I should upgrade to? iOS 6 is working perfectly fine for me on my iPad 3. I have no desire to put that crap operating system iOS 7 on it. People should not be forced to upgrade to anything! If it works for them, that is all that matters.

You remind me of that friend that has an XP box and complains that newer stuff won't run on it. You want the latest and greatest? Upgrade. Want to stay on an older system, fine but be aware that there will be stuff that won't run on it. It's not just Apple stuff either. You'll start seeing more Apps that require iOS7 or, by the end of the year 8. That's life.

As far as iOS7 being a "crap operating system". That's just wrong. It took some getting used to, for me about ten minutes, but I like it better than iOS6. It fixed a lot of weird anachronisms and bugs. Is it perfect? No but no software is. Overall it's a big improvement.

These stubborn old IOS 6 users! :)

Those crazy "change for the sake of change" iOS 7 lovers! :)

----------

As for it being crap... I used it for 45 minutes on an iPad Air at an Apple Store. It crashed even the Notes application, repeatedly, doing SIMPLE things, and the GUI SUCKS. You think inconsistencies were fixed? I found nothing BUT inconsistencies in iOS 7.

Yes, it's crap. The very few convenience features added to it that are new can be cool, but they don't compensate for the GUI disaster or lack of basic reliability I experienced in my 45 minute demo. Also, it slows down iPhone 4 dramatically. Why the hell would I want any of this??

Did you try it back before 7.1? It's vastly improved. I can tolerate my i4, now. But my actual phone is a 5, and it is still on iOS6 for jailbreak.

Incorrect. As the AppleCare support terms and conditions clearly states:

4.2 Technical Support. The Plan does not include:

(ii) Issues that could be resolved by upgrading software to the then current version.

So, based on the issue at hand, they owe you nothing. iOS 7 fixes the issue, therefore, you cannot harass them to fix older software. PERIOD.

It also states:

To receive service or support under the Plan, you agree to comply with the following:

(v) Update software to currently published releases prior to seeking service.

Therefore, BEFORE YOU EVEN CALL THEM, you agreed to update to iOS 7. If you don't agree to these terms, too bad. Stop using your device. You originally agreed when you opened the box and turned it on. Stop whining and get over it.

FaceTime Audio

If they're going to make one last update for iOS 6, I'd like to see FaceTime Audio enabled on older devices.

After all, if they can get more people to use FaceTime Audio, what's the problem?

As an iPod Touch 4 owner, this really sucks. The iPT4 never got an upgrade to iOS 7, and was heavily marketed as an inexpensive way to FaceTime. Thanks, Apple!

Your mistake was believing that anything 'apple' would be inexpensive.

Forced upgrades are apples business model.

Unless you live in Australia or Europe in which case consumer rights are guaranteed even without AppleCare. You do not need to upgrade to receive support when the product fails to perform as-advertised.

The benchmark tests posted here a couple months ago indicated otherwise.

I did upgrade a couple iPads in our office to iOS7 to evaluate. It was a slow, laggy, unreliable, obnoxious, and garish text adventure and turned the iPad from a professional peripheral into a childs toy. I replaced them with iOS6 models.
I guess I must have a special iPhone 4 and coincidentally iPad 2 because my iPhone 4 with iOS 7 is definitely better.

I've noticed that iOS 7 is slower than iOS 5 (or even iOS 6) with certain apps but that's because the same apps since iOS 5 have gotten bigger/more processor intensive requiring better GPU etc. This can be said for the system performance too. Some functions/UIs are simply going to require better GPUs/CPUs to match the newer requirements.

This is most noticeable with apps like FaceBook, Twitter CPU hungry camera apps etc. FaceBook is a whore when it comes to performance requirements on the iPhone 4. Nuts.

But there is no performance advantage with iOS 6 over iOS 7 in with my iPhone 4. I did install a new battery and did a factory restore as I did with iOS6 but doubt that has anything to do with my phone's iOs 7 performance.

They may be present. Try enforcing them in court, however. No terms or conditions can override your statutory rights. You clearly missed this in what you quoted

I also have an IPT4. When it wouldn't take iOS7 I moved it to a secondary role and got a new device for front line duty. It doesn't bother me because it's four years old, I don't expect it to run everything forever.

You remind me of a friend of mine that's pi$$ed because Microsoft won't support his XP box. Let it go dude.

There's a difference. The IPT4 may have been four years old, but for a simple software patch (it's literally as simple as changing one server address in a system file) that's already out for jailbroken iPods, by the way --- it's not too much to ask. Or Apple could fix the server that ran the old versions of FaceTime. XP is like 13 years old. It's also not 4 years old, it's just over 3 years old. Big difference.

Microsoft, infact, supports your friend's XP box. He can buy and install Windows 7 or 8.1 and get the same features that he once had. I can't do that with my iPod.

Jesus - Apple's biblical followers are the worst. I've been using Macs since the iMac, and have had literally a dozen iPods and iPhones... But when Apple "dun goofed" like this... I get upset.

The support document says any devices not capable of iOS 7 should upgrade to iOS 6.1.6 which is the iPod touch 4th gen. Is that firmware having the FaceTime issue? Because it mentions that devices on 7.0.4 or 6.1.6 are exempt from the issue.

When the issue occurred I posted on Apple discussions about ios6 and the iphone4s. I added a comment that the timing was perfect to effect a cyclization of all the old users to newer phones. Apple responded by saying it was a rant and removing the post. Makes me convinced the bug which is fixed for the iOS payload on older devices which just not fixable for now is not an accident.

The best way to solve the issue is to contact apple directly to voice your concerns http://apple.com/feedback. This is where apple engineers review suggestions. If the issue is important enough, which I think it is then something will be done about it if enough people voice their concern to the right place.
