More like this is what I hope to see from Apple; not just more of HBO/Netflix content.
I really think Apple has the right people an spirit to create great content.

Honestly? I'm still not understanding why they're restricting their content to family-friendly only. Is everything seriously going to be G to TV-PG? No MA content at all?

What are they trying to prove exactly? Who is their target audience? Do they not see how popular Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video are?

Is there anything to suggest this show is designed for families? It's a drama. A show focusing on a woman in a Japanese historical setting has...lots of potential room for intense themes and events.

Just from reading a quick review of the book, which I've never read, it appears to contain war, prison, and torture for starters where adult content is concerned.

Well that would be the problem here.
All but 1 of the proceeding 25 post seem to know or directly correlate anything about the book.
It’s easier to react than to investigate.

Same here. I feel their content will be similar to Hallmark or Lifetime networks. Not saying this is bad. Just not my cup of tea.

You do realize that Netflix nearly got laughed off the internet when they announced they were producing their own shows, right?

I just finished reading the book. I can see why Apple picked up the book for a series.

The book chronicles 5 generations of Koreans living in Japan, spanning 79 years and 3 major historical events, Japanese occupation of Korea, World War II, and Korean War.

I am not sure how Apple would approach it but the book is fairly graphic, not just in violence but also sex. This is not Downton Abbey. It's hard to pinpoint what the book is most similar to, but it has ambitious scope that should interest a wide range of viewers, especially international.

Read the book… it's not family friendly in the least. Rather, extremely hard hitting, at times violent and sexually explicit. The book is definitely MA in its take on the horrific struggles and discrimination Koreans went through in the 20th century. I'd have expected Netflix to pick it up for the darkness.

Also, the review above is messed. It's not the town's minister, but a well-to-do young pastor from Pyongyang who decides to marry Sunja in order to save her from dishonour.

I think Apple just doesn't want to do a bland "T&A" show. Or a T&A show with violence.

They want it to have a meaning. They want it to be thought-provoking. Intellectually challenging.

I think it is possible, but difficult. The resulting shows may be better in the end, though.
