And I’m predicting a sun rise for 2 days ago.

There is no avoiding a recession. Plenty of lagging indicators are still giving the impression the economy isn’t that bad.

But when I had to pay $800 to little more than half full my heating oil tank for the winter, and groceries are through the roof? That’s money that would have been spent elsewhere like on a vacation or on gifts.

Inflation will be gone soon. All the slack in the supply chain is gonna become taunt like a dog leash about the same time everyone is broke and unable to borrow because of the interest rates. Then EVERYTHING will be on sale. Everything.

The coming recession is going to be one that rivals the early 80’s. Most of you chillin’s who are in your 20’s and 30’s now have never seen anything like it. Ever. I was a teenager at the time and I remember my parents being broke. All. The. Time. Mortgage rates were insane and car loans sucked too.

People are in for a HUGE shock in the next 6-10 months. There’s no stopping it now. The Fed is purposely crushing the economy to stop inflation. First thing companies do when they need to cut costs? Layoffs.
I don’t disagree. However, I have read some theories that layoffs may not be as bad as people fear because it has been so hard to hire / retain talent. Only time will tell.

I do think there will be at least some moderate layoffs. I also think companies will use the recession as an excuse to force people back into the office.

Yes it’s going to get ugly for a while.

I don’t understand Apple these last six months. They are panicking and scrounging and penny pinching as if they’re about to go bankrupt, and now this.

Aren’t they a luxury brand worth trillions?
Maybe they know something about the likelihood of Taiwan being invaded and global supply of many parts they need severed. That would be a real long storm to weather.

You have to laugh at their press statement '......to cut costs'!!!! They are the richest company in the world, they make billions upon billions a year making them a Trillion dollar company and they say they have got to cuts costs!!!!. What an absolute riduclous thing for Apple to say. Just goes to show you just how ruthless Apple is with all the profits they make they are not prepared to take an dollar loss anywhere.

Remind me what the outrage is about again?

It’s not like Apple is planning to suddenly axe half their workforce. They have simply decided that they are not going to hire any more for the time being, but otherwise, it’s still business as usual.

I have a hard time seeing why this is evidently a bad thing. Apple will hire more people when they see a need to, and not hire anybody extra when they don’t see the need.

Or are people suggesting that Apple take on a whole load of extra manpower on their payroll as a form of charity?

Apple has over $2 trillion to buy Microsoft? That's news to me.

It was wishful sarcasm, and a throwaway comment. And reading that Microsoft was apparently involved in the creation of an app that supposedly can predict which young girl will be pregnant in their teens. One factor is whether their home has 'running hot water'.

TO me, that should have an effect on their earnings at the least. It seems silly and Orwellian. And I still don't know if it means a girl in a house with running hot water is more or less likely... Good grief...

And the moment Goldman Sachs figured out a way to have massive profits in a 'down market', it's been down markets almost ever since.

And the rich can write off their losses too. Either write them off in one year, or spread that loss over successive years thus losing is winning, and they can avoid paying any taxes for years. It's what used to be called 'cheating', but it's a tactic to help 'shield earnings'. But like BDO, and other companies that advertise their ability to warp tax law, they spend money to save money and screw the country. It must be interesting to be so rish you project a reality distortion field and people bend at the waist to worship you. *shrug*

Spot on!

So many people, who apparently have difficulty reading, reflexively jump to the conclusion Apple will be firing loads of employees.

Apple has a demonstrated track record of being one of the best managed companies in the world. That has especially been borne out during a world-changing 2+ year pandemic.

Life goes on, Apple will continue to do well, and another 600,000 iPhones will be manufactured and sold today, as is the case with every other day (on the average).

You are likely right, but history is not always prologue. How many corporations have died after a history of success. But Apple, being Apple, just means it would take a really huge massive issue that could take them down, but it does not mean they are impervious from a self inflicted fatal wound.

Yes, anything could possibly happen. Including the sky falling someday.

Some people live for that. Others do something creative or constructive instead. Life goes on in the meantime.

Anything can happen.

The onus then falls on these critics to elaborate on why they think Apple will fail. And thus far, I can only say that their track record on why Apple is doomed has been pretty poor, because it typically boils down to “Apple isn’t doing what I like”.

Which could also just simply mean that they are wrong, and Apple was right all along.

Anyone here willing to even entertain that possibility?

Brace for a bumpy ride. Looks like this is gonna be a decade of turmoil.

I just don't know why it has to be though. These things called financial markets and capitalism are artificial man made things. My recommendation was just to pickup from where we left off in January of 2020. Just act like the past 3 years never happened. Everyone has to be play their part though. End the work from home policies. Go back to the office every day, 9 to 5, fill the downtowns again, buy stuff on credit, buy from the food vendors, Take Uber rides, go to kareoke, carnivals, take vacations, fill hotels, just do it if you don't like it. Go into town every weekend, plan a vacation every 4 months and go to small towns. We just have to go back to the way things were. Its the only solution I see.
Sorry Mr. Dee, can't say I totally agree with that. But I don't totally disagree either. I don't want to say it's never going back to Jan 2020, but it'll take at least a generation or two before the downtown commutes are fully back again. Thankfully, I'll be retired long before then. Won't buy stuff on credit to help the economy, even if it means holding onto the phone or computer an extra year or two. But I won't stop the vacations either. I'll just be smarter about it. More road trips in place of air travel. Visit more small towns and cities in place of bigger ones. There's so much to see in our own country without spending a month's salary at Disney or Universal. I will continue buying from those food trucks, though. Love those street tacos!

It seems even their price hikes didn't help ...
I know a ton of people who would always buy the latest Apple stuff annually or upon refresh, myself included to a degree. But the price hikes here in the UK mean I haven't bought anything since my iPhone 13 Pro in late 2021. Plans to update my MacBook Pro, iMac & iPad Pro won't be happening.

Loads of my friends haven't bothered to upgrade anything for a year or two due to UK pricing. So I am sure many people will have been put off spending on luxury hardware when they are still trying to figure out how they will heat their homes this winter.

On behalf of all Wake County, North Carolina residents, my god I hope this means they abandon their plans to turn North Carolina into East Cupertino.

But it's like the chants of 'Tim Cook is going to kill Apple'. Like where does some of that hysteria come from? Sure, it's possible, but not very likely. Not so far. Sure there have been missteps, but Mac Cube?

I think they are being prudent, but possibly pushing the panic button a little early? Stay tuned...

I was following along until you said “ karaoke,” then you lost me. I just can’t do that. Gotta draw a line there.

corporations are built by law and charter to maximize profits to benefit the shareholder. don't see anything about this as panicking, they're just in a spot where it makes the most sense to hold on new hires to cut future expense. nature of the beast. #america
