I don’t thing it will be a generation or two. If it gets really bad there will be massive stimulus and rates will be cut back to or near zero.

This is the typical boom and bust economic cycle and we have been long overdue for a recession.

They are hard and they suck but we will get through it.

2008 wasn’t that long ago and that was pretty terrible. 9/11 and dot com busy before that. Plenty of bad stuff in the 80’s, 70’s had stagflation. We made it though all of this and much more - we will make it though this too.
I don't know much about what happened in 70-80 because I was a kid, and my parents never appeared to be in trouble, but today is way worse for us than any other time as adults.

A hiring freeze doesn't actually cut costs, but it stops them from continuing to balloon.

Remind me what the outrage is about again?

It’s not like Apple is planning to suddenly axe half their workforce. They have simply decided that they are not going to hire any more for the time being, but otherwise, it’s still business as usual.

I have a hard time seeing why this is evidently a bad thing. Apple will hire more people when they see a need to, and not hire anybody extra when they don’t see the need.

Or are people suggesting that Apple take on a whole load of extra manpower on their payroll as a form of charity?

You and many others are not able to comprehend the absurdity of Apple's statement they need to 'cut costs'. I seem to remember briefly seeing an article today that said Apple had overtaken Amazon, Google and Meta as being the wealthiest company this week and yet Apple bring out a press statement that they need to 'cut costs'. Apple do not need to cut costs in hiring because they obscenely wealthy and they will continue to be obscenely wealthy.

The ONLY reason Apple would need to cut costs is so they can maintain their profit margins. 'Sorry we cannot hire you right now because in doing so it will affect our yearly profits'.

You didn’t answer the question.

What’s wrong with Apple opting not to hire any more people during this time?

I didn't answer your question because it does not warrant being answered because if you understood my post in the first place then you wouldn't be asking your question. Or you did understand my question and your just being obstinate.

Your point seems to boil down to “Apple is making a ton of money, so they can afford to splurge on hiring extra people they may not even need in the first place”.

I fail to see how the two are related. I can be very rich, while still being very careful / prudent with my spending. Just because I have the resources to keep an extra 1000 people on payroll doesn’t mean I should need to.

So I think I understand what you are trying to say, but I don’t understand why you think that Apple is evidently obligated to behave the way you think they ought to?

And in case I wasn’t being clear, I am genuinely curiously. Not being deliberately obtuse (I don’t do that for arguments / discussions).

That's an odd use of the term fiduciary.

I think it’s far more odd to bring up climate activism into a discussion about shareholder value. Let me know which decade the world will end cos activists have been making that claim every decade since I’ve been alive. According to AOC, we have 4 more years left.

I find it amazing how scientists who can predict the earth’s temperature a 100 years from now, down to the degree, can’t tell me what the temperature will be in 20 days. The planet has been getting warmer for a very long time and no one knows how much man has contributed to it.

A lot of global warming “research” is driven by corrupt grant money driven by fearmongers like Al gore who’ve gotten very rich peddling junk science and fear; if it’s so real, why are they buying up beach properties and flying around in their private jets and generally have the highest carbon footprint?

Al Gore - recent purchase includes $8.875 million 1.5 acre Montecito property with ocean views.
John Kerry (current climate czar) - owns 6 homes, 2 yachts, 12 cars, private jet. Recently purchased 18.5 acre waterfront property in Martha’s Vineyard.
Obama - $12M waterfront mansion in Martha’s Vineyard.
AOC - thinks no one should take planes according to her green new deal… except her.. how very typical of socialists.

I won’t even get into the hypocrisy of celebs with their multiple homes, yachts, and private jets lecturing us on how we need to consume less fossil fuels.

You sound to me a lot like them. Maybe if you didn’t buy products from the very company you accuse of harming the environment, I might take you a little more seriously. Better yet, you can help the capitalists who are working hard to solve these big problems; whether it’s tech that take carbon out of the atmosphere, or organisms that “eat” plastic in the ocean, cleaner and more reliable renewable energy, etc.

Al Gore? Hah!

Here's what's happening. There is increasing damage spreading and happening all across the planet. Snow crabs is one rather large recent incident.

The climate is not going to slan the door and we are dead. What will happen is what is happening, areas will have freaky mass die offs, and areas will experience incredibly bizarre weather. The weather trends are becoming hard to miss, if you look for them. Here, we've had more massive wind storms than ever, and first snows that came in October and November are coming in December and even January. Warm trends used to start in March and even mid-April, and now we've had temps over 50 in the end of February, and March. The winter is shrinking, but we have more below freezing days, and more ice storms. Last winter/spring we had something like 5 weekends where the temps were well under 0, to warm up for the week, and plunge for the weekend again. Bitter cold. And last summer we had days/weeks of temps over 100 degrees, and then have massive rains and flooding. All strange weather patterns.

But the data IS out there, and what I say isn't going to change people determined to not see the damage being done.

Eventually the planet will be unable to support life, but it's not going to be 'you wake up tomorrow dead'. Well, unless it's a fire, hurricane, tornado, etc...

But could humanity survive on the planet for eternity? Even if we did everything right, eventually the planet would see the effects, but it wouldn't be in my, or your lifetimes... *shrug*

I don’t understand Apple these last six months. They are panicking and scrounging and penny pinching as if they’re about to go bankrupt, and now this.

Aren’t they a luxury brand worth trillions?
Well, they don't stay rich by being careless with their money ;)

It’s not about being careless. It’s about their positioning in the market and brand identity. Apple was a luxury brand that did things like include chargers and didn’t nickel and dime people. They were “above” that so to speak. But now they are not, their brand identity is eroding and they are slowly tilting towards becoming like other brands that are almost hostile to their customers.

Actually the hostility began when Apple went 'closed box'. They have been flirting with it in the early days. (I remember the most popular repair was the caps on the Apple II floppy adapter that would pop because Apple didn't include a small cheap plastic piece to help make sure that the user plugged the cable in properly) Then the original Macintosh, fully closed. The second Macintosh, fully closed. The Lisa wasn't 'closed' per say, but I don't remember there being many add-on cards for it. Then the Macintosh II line with NuBus and there were more cards available, but how many people used the slots. Then the 'residential Macs' and most of them were closed too. There is no reason for ANY vendor to fully close down a notebook, and make part replacement a risky procedure, even locking certain parts to their hardware so swapping storage can't be done with off-the-shelf parts.

But my point is Apple has been 'user hostile' for quite a long time, and even though people get burned, Apple still sells boat loads (literally) of their stuff. They haven't had to listen to their users in a very very long time and have faced no backlash which has emboldended most vendors now to copy them in locking down everything they can. Maybe with this sales downturn, a 'dry spell', the industry will listen to users? Yeah, that'll happen, for sure 'this time'... :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Yes Al Gore… I laugh too and cringe at the fact that he’s an Apple board member.

Data exists to show that earth has been warming for centuries/millennia but no definitive data exists that shows how much people have contributed to that. Does it seem like global warming is accelerating? Yes. But the speed at which the universe is expanding is also accelerating (which have confounded scientists) but I doubt man has anything to do with that.

And unless you believe in God then it doesn’t matter if we all disappear… Earth is just a spec of dust within the universe and there’s nothing special about people… no better than a grain of sand.

If you do believe in God then none of this should come as a surprise since it was prophesied 2k years ago…

“The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire. They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him.”

Here’s the bottom line… people should do what they can to help but everyone is a hypocrite, so no amount of virtue signaling and lecturing will spur others to action.

But never underestimate the ingenuity of people to solve very tough problems. Capitalism isn’t the enemy, it’s the solution… potentially.

If climate collapse will get people's attention, then I just hope I die of natural causes before it happens. I'd like to enjoy my 'life liberty and pursuit of hapiness' for as long as I am able. With cancer rates skyrocketing, and their 'cures' being often worse than the disease, who knows how long any of us have on the planet.

You sound like a young girl with a good heart/intentions. I wouldn’t worry too much if I were you. There have been and always will be fear mongers looking to gain power/money at your expense. Fear has always been a favorite tool of tyrants to control the populace, btw… look how Xi Ping is using Covid and lockdowns to gain emperor like status.

Your life, liberty, & pursuit of happiness is far more likely to be taken away by the same socialists who are engaging in fear mongering and promising utopia through social justice and equity (ask the Chinese, Cubans, Venezuelans, Californians, etc.) so be sure to arm yourself with knowledge, don’t engage in party politics, read a lot of Thomas Sowell, and don’t trust the mainstream media, and I’m sure you’ll live a long, happy life. :)

Seeing as to how Twitter and Facebook recently just laid off a ton of employees, I wonder if Apple might be able to use this to push people to return to the office (which I maintain is necessary for Apple to continue operating at peak efficiency).

I remember many people here saying that Apple engineers are extremely talented and would have no problems finding employment elsewhere. Well, the question now is – find employment where exactly?

Anywhere else? That's because Twitter and Facebook/Meta aren't hiring, doesn't mean there aren't other companies looking for talented software engineers and alike. They're not limited to "big tech".
