The problem with advancing gaming that far, is that it's increibly expensive, and the more you push it, the smaller the target audience that can enjoy your game.

And frankly, "enjoying" what is essentially a tech demo for a game engine is a bit of a stretch too. I don't play games for graphics, I play games for games.

Initially I was pretty worried about Battlefield 3, all they'd talk about was "Look at the pretty Engine, look at the pretty lighting, look at the pretty shadows, look at the pretty shadows, look at the shiny graphics, look at the pretty destruction".

All the way through all of their presentations I wanted someone to stand up and ask "But is the game fun?"

Thank goodness the Multi-player is fun because the single-player was awful.

And some of the best games in history had stunningly good graphics. Yes, a game has to actually be enjoyable for it to be good, but with better graphics, physics, audio, I think they can be more enjoyable still.
