Teardrop never made sense to me—nor anything asymmetrical, like having a larger margin below vs. above the screen. Symmetry is nicer for landscape usage. Screen size? I would tolerate larger (a little, not a lot, please). But I don’t want it—I like the 3.5 size I have now. LTE phones (not all Android phones, mainly LTE ones) went bigger to hide the giant batteries needed! Next-gen LTE shouldn’t have that problem... fingers crossed.

As for picking an iPhone up, I’ve never had a problem. But here’s a tip: form a sucker-mouth like a seagoing lamprey, and suck the iPhone up by the center. Easy!

also this ^
the reason android phones have huge screens is because they need to house bulky chips, batteries, etc.... they have spun it as a feature

Agree and Disagree

I agree.

The 4/4S looks fantastic but I miss how the 3GS felt in my hand, it was more ergonomic. Also, you guys really shouldn't be ragging on this guy. Didn't you read the Steve Jobs biography? Jobs and Ive said in there that they made the edges of the iPad 2 more rounded and smooth so that it would be easier to pick up, or even scoop up, off a table.

Was kind of hoping that the 5 would look and feel more like the newer iPod Touch.

Probably not, but I think it's better to maybe stick with the "S" series of each phone, that way the kinks are mostly worked out of the first version. I got a 3GS then skipped the 4 and went for a 4S...I'm going to wait out the 5 and see if a 5S comes along after everybody brings up their complaints and concerns with the 5.

I too miss my 3Gs form factor and how it feels in my hand specifically weight and form; but sorry my 4s is not at all hard to pick up off of a table. I know exactly what you mean though, it is easier to pick up the pre iP4's off a flat surface and I love the shape of the iPad 2. I really hope the next iteration of the iPhone(5, More than likely) is a shrunk iPad 2 +3G, the mock ups look stunning. Oh multi-touch home button too please!!

Heck, just wait til you see Netflix on a 55" screen! You're gonna hate watching Netflix on that S2. And you're gonna be needing some BIIIIIIIGGG pockets to carry around a TV!

Cool. Netflix was still better on the S2 than 4S. :)

If Apple release the next iPhone in the summer, what will they announce in the fall?
iPods are no longer significant enough on their own, to warrant a standalone event.
Here's how I see the mobile rollout strategy:

Spring: iPad.
Summer: WWDC & new iOS.
Fall: iPhone and iOS release(feat. iPods).

Despite what these boards might lead you to believe, Apple still makes computers.

I seriously doubt this will happen. Heck, you still can't go into an Apple Store or any carrier and just pick up an iPhone 4S. They are still on backorder in most cases.

No chance they release a new iPhone this soon after releasing the 4S.

Dude, 4.3 inch is so 2011. I don't know about you, but I hate watching Netflix on a 4.3" screen, it's so much better on my projector and 100" screen. Heck, when I throw my projector into my backpack and roll up the screen and carry it under my arm, I can take it everywhere I go!

Oh okay. That's good to hear.

I think the 4S delay was deliberate to shift the iPhone release to Fall. With the iPod waning in popularity, Apple needed a new device for the holiday season. Plus, with a March release for the iPad, they have a good 6 months to engineer the new iPad features into the smaller iPhone.

That was my take as well. Apple now has two tent pole releases spaced about 6 months apart with some smaller events/releases sprinkled through the rest of the year. It may have been predicated on a slip in iOS5/iCloud, conversely the feature set of iCloud/iOS5 may have been upped in light of the additional 3 months.

Considering Apple just sold 37 million phones inclusive of a 2-year old phone, a 1 year-old phone and a “disappointing speed bump with no LTE or 4" screen” I just don’t see there being a business reason to expedite an iPhone 5. Demand continues to outstrip supply.

love the stupid, "oh you want a bigger screen on your iphone, get a tv/ipad" comments

yeah that makes total sense

I don't think they should pull the release forward even if it is ready.

I think the best release for the phone is nearer the end of the year like they did with the 4S, gives them time to announce ios.x (if they want) and give it a few months of beta testing before unveiling the phone that will run it beautifully.

Bookmark your post and come back after iPhone 5 release.
The bigger screen is a fact since its on prototype phones.

And to think Apple did not make you sign a NDA before you were allowed in the Apple labs to see the sixth generation iPhone prototype with the 4" screen.

Idts

I don't think so, it's too short of a cycle for the 4S. It does not make good business sense to release the iPhone 5 this soon.

What if the Apple has another item in mind for the holiday season...that would be a big seller also...a.k.a. this mythical TV they are talking about.

So you'd have iPad in March 1Q, iPhone in June/July 2Q, iTV in Sept/Oct 3Q, and big holiday sales with all of them for 4Q

Three tent poles are better then 2...and 1 product for 3 of the 4 quarters means new launches every quarter with the holiday season propping up the 4th.

Apple has said they have some exciting new products in the pipeline...TV is most likely the final leg they are working on of entertainment.

Same rumor, different year.

It would be quite the feat to supposedly push out the iPad 3 and then iPhone 5 so quickly after one another.

I think one good hint will be if we see an iOS 6 announcement event in March/April...without that then I think iPhone 5 will be in the fall and iOS 6 will be announced at WWDC. I cannot imagine them announcing an entirely new iPhone (essentially from the ground up) without a fresh new version of iOS to go along with it.

^^^ This. Apple will announce iOS 6 before they announce the sixth iPhone. Apple has been on 1 year cycle for iOS releases which are now in the fall.

*hint* Iphone5 will be released 3 month after iOS 6 beta.
The reason for iPhone 4S delay was because of iOS5 and iCloud integration.

Lets hope for an iOS 6 beta event in April. Then we will have a summer iPhone.

Apple is a worldwide company focused particularly on growth in China right now. The 4S just went on sales in that region this month through Apple and other authorized channels. Apple is NOT going to short circuit sales of the 4S in China by starting to sell the iPhone 5 in the US/Europe/Japan five months from now. No global business has such tunnel vision.

My current iPhone cuts off the p@rn images above the vag area. Spread eagle images aren't relevant on the phone's screen. So I can't wait for a full size screen! Full screen pr@n!

Aw, I was looking forward to the tear-drop. Really easy and comfortable to hold, but also easy to pick up off a table (try picking an iPhone 4/S off the table).
This is obviously a design flaw by Apple as I too have been unable to pick my iPhone 4S up off a table for weeks at a time. They should produce a tear shaped case for it an provide to all customers free of charge to correct this design flaw they fail to own up to. If they do not rectify this soon a class action lawsuit may be necessary.

I almost never complain about iPhone related things, like upgrade eligibility and such, but if they release a new major step-up like this looks to be (similar to the 3G to 4), i'll be very upset that it came only 6 months after the 4S.

Thta is why I learned to buy just what I need for what I need not features.

Apple is never returning to its traditional (predictable) release schedule. The whole point is to be less predictable so sales don't drop off a cliff when customers start waiting for a new one. The transition was painful last fall but the hard part is past.

I just saw some dummy cnet advice sulu knits advise someone that upgrading her 3G to the 4S would be a bad idea since a new phone was due in the fall. Hello?!? Thats a 3 month old phone you're deeming too old to bother! And the replacement is not due any time soon!

According to most people, if you don't buy the new iPhone during its first month, it's deemed old.

Why would Apple call the SIXTH iPhone release iPhone 5?

You know, a more obvious reason for this is they are just starting early so they can have the biggest possible inventory for launch in October.

I think Apple realizes that the iPhone is now poised to be the #1 smartphone in the world and is right on the edge of taking over market share from Android....therefore they want to have enough phones available at launch....so they start production earlier then expected while continuing the 4s at a smaller of the 2 lines at Foxconn (either brazil or china)

You realize that the Mac line gets updated every 6 months right? It's not that far fetched but again, I agree that they probably won't follow this pattern for the iOS line.

But they could shift it up a month or two if they want to shift something else into a Oct launch (say the TV).
