Why? It is just advertising. The "gift" generated views and clicks, increased exposure for Apple products, and was way cheaper than paying for the same amount of exposure via traditional advertising placement. It's not altruistic, it's just a numbers game.

Why? Because a kid who's super creative and has a ton of potential received some equipment that might very well change his life and foster future career opportunities. His future is incredibly bright.

I understand it feels good and provides a rush to stick it to Apple with your cynicism.

Some people with a good heart create and do some amazing things. Others, well, just go out of their way to find darkness everywhere they look.

That's nice of them, but really he just needed an external hard drive.

My cousin's husband has MS, and my cousin was diagnosed with lupus. He loves music, and producing his own music helps him get through all the stuff he needs to deal with and gives him something to look forward to. They have a young daughter which I'm sure makes it more challenging.

He's using much worse gear than a 2018 MBP and they don't have the money to buy a new Mac. His computer died and I gave him my old 2012 MBP where the wifi doesn't work anymore, nor does the iSight camera. His wife's computer died so he gave her his (my old) MBP and I found an old 27" iMac that was vesa mounted to the wall at work but fell and hit the ground. The screen was broken and the chassis had a big dent in it so so the iMac sits on the floor and he uses it with an external KVM right now.

They are both such super good people and despite everything, are still very positive and caring of others.

This, in my opinion is someone in need.

FWIW I edited a documentary on a 2017 MBP last year. I had enough storage, but it was still quite difficult due to processor and memory limitations, visual artifacts from the graphics card, a defective touch bar and a failing battery.

When I finally got my hands on a new Apple Silicon MBP, I took the 2017 model to a shop for a battery replacement, but that screwed up the keyboard and I ended up selling it for parts. That was the worst Mac I ever owned.

He said his was a 2018, but he might have had some of the same problems.

The butterfly keyboard MBPs were the MBPs we'd all like to forget, especially Apple. It's during this time I went back to PC for a year or so. I eventually bought a refurbished 2015 that my wife is still using to this day.

Is a 500GB 2018 MBP trash now? That's basically what I work on. I mean 256GB on my machine is closer to 500 than it is 0.
My daily rider is a 2012 MBPr, barely keeping me a float. What's funny, I have the latest gen sitting unused because I am a lazy procrastinator that I need to find a good weekend to transfer and reinstall everything.

So, he didn't upgrade the SSD and instead got a new laptop?
Yep, replacing the entire computer has been the "new normal" ever since Apple removed the ability for end-users to upgrade internal storage and RAM...

And, yes, while he could've just as easily attached some external storage to get around the lack of internal storage, that wouldn't have been the marketing opportunity that Apple and Jared were looking for.
