It surprises me how many people are posting about how 5 FREE gigs aren't enough. It's not a service you're entitled to. The whole strategy is for customers to use up the free amount quickly and then feel like they need to pay more for the features it offers.

Because Microsoft , Dropbox , and google offer better services...
I have 25gigs free with skydrive

Aside from (inflexible) device back ups, I don't see what iCloud storage is good for.

iCloud backups are cool, but... I found out today some of the servers used had a problem last October, and may have issues restoring backups. I found this out because my iCloud backup isn't currently restorable, so I'm running off a 6 month old backup. Which is an absolute pig. Hoping that Apple third line support will be able to sort the issue, but every day that passes is a day of new information, and less useful.

Moral of the story - do an iTunes backup regularly, personally I'm right out of trust for the iCloud services.

(I managed to not rant at the Apple Store staff about not telling a customer that their backups may not be working. And I'm doing my best not to rant here - needles to say - not communicating this type of *potential* issue to affected customers is rather poor. Are *you* affected? How can we know?)

(As per others - I had the storage email, but without any real file access abilities, and with unreliable backups making that not worth it... well, it's not really worth the electrons it's wasting, in my opinion)

That's because of a lawsuit against Apple.

Do I care? I payed for push mail function back then and I have not seen any compensation for that actually...do I care that Apple did infringe on those patents of Motorola? No! Do I think they should just pay the royalties or find another work around? Hell yes!

A lot of Bitchy McBitchertons here.

I upgraded on the 28th for additional 50 GB, so all I am getting is two days for free, i.e. from September 28th 2013 till September 30th 2013.

Big deal, thank you Apple...

You aren't getting charged then. At all.
Geez. How many times do we have to friggin' say it?

I love complaining, when I actually have something to complain about. In this case, I think I'll just avoid speculation on how it is that Apple can do what they do, and just accept the fact that this change costs me a total of nothing, and gives Apple (et al) time to incorporate more services into the cloud as they work out the wonkiness. I get 25Gb for another year, hurray!

If you think the options from 3rd party storage options are better for your needs, use another product. Apple is not going to become another company because you wish it, and your ulcer-inducing anxiety is likely to actually cause an ulcer if you don't just relax and move on to the product that makes you happy.

Buyers remorse is no excuse. Do some research and be an informed consumer before you buy, rather than a whiney consumer following an uninformed impulse purchase.

An excellent point, I totally agree with this. Perhaps apple feels like because their service is baked into their device software they don't need to make as much of an effort to hook people in.

If you break it down Apple certainly has the worst Cloud storage, but it's the most convenient. If ICloud offered all the options that its competitors provide, it would be the top dog in the name of storage.

Apple probably doesn't have the storage prowess to handle all that data right now unfortunately.

Whining ******

I cna'y believe how many Apple fans have become shining wits ... I mean whining Sh**s.

Apple gives something for nothing and they still complain. OK it's not the biggest gift in the world and it probsbly doesn't cost them that much but they didn't have to do it.

If you want iDisk then email Apple and let them know through the official way of giving them feedback. Hopefully if enough people do it they may actually implement it.

If you have a kid, you can easily accumulate 10GB in video and pictures in a year.

And for every vacation add another 2GB.

1.6 GB? You're working too hard - take a vacation. :D

I think the concept here is that there are two kinds of iCloud users. Those who use iOS devices combined with a PC or Mac and those who are "PC Free".

Those who use it with a PC or Mac can offload their camera rolls to their computer for permanent storage. From there you can back up these items as you normally do with your computer. If these items are offloaded to your computer regularly, you won't use a lot of space for your iCloud backups--if you use them at all.

PC free users are more reliant on Apple's cloud backup strategy. They don't have a machine to offload these items to so naturally they're going to need more iCloud storage space. These users will need to upgrade to more storage at some point and there will likely be a cost associated with that. Unlike the PC/Mac users, these folks aren't spending money on computers or backup drives so the cost really isn't a bad deal.

They built a ginormous data center and they shipped a few petabytes of iOS/OS X apps and iTunes content while I typed this sentence. They seem to be handling that spiffingly.

DropBox, a company with 200 employees, can manage free online storage for 50 million users.I'm not buying the "awww, be patient with poor Apple, they're the little guy on the block" excuses from the <5% market share days. They were the #1 company in the world last year. They're worth more than Google and Microsoft combined. They should have iCloud services (and maps, ahem) that are better than Microsoft's and Google's offerings combined.

why are they doing this?

I'd guess that they've been getting beaten up a lot lately in the tech press over Maps and whatnot. If they killed this extra data when they planned to, people would lose data. Those people would be upset, it would create another negative buzz and that would be unpleasant for Apple.

I'd imagine that a lot of users are like me. I've got 25GB of iCloud storage from the transition and I use maybe 1GB. While some users probably take advantage of the extra space, it's unlikely they're the majority. All taking the data away would do is create problems.

This one sentence alone sums up why this country is going to hell in a handbasket. We 'Mericans sure do love doing the opposite.

I rarely, if ever, have anything worth complaining about. Hence, I rarely complain. If one reads further, the point was actually engaging in a solution.

Conversing via platitudes isn't helping "this country" much either, maybe you should travel more? :)

BOT, Apple is giving us another year of 25Gb, hurray!

Apple gives something for nothing and they still complain.
Uh, it recently became a free service. For several years Apple wanted money for cloud services similar to what others already offered for free. MobileMe kinda-sorta flopped, so now they (reluctantly) offer a free thingy called iCloud. And since it's Apple they of course want more for less if you want to upgrade -- 50GB on iCloud is $100/year, 100GB on SkyDrive is $50/year.

So excuse me for saving my gratitude until they start reasoning along these lines: "Hi user! Welcome, and thanks for buying an Apple product! Since we sell expensive premium products which are part of a seamlessly integrated ecosystem that we are quick to brag about, we'd like to put our money where our mouth is and offer you the best, most versatile, most advanced, most modern and most generous cloud service package out there. Here's 20GB of free space for you to use as you see fit -- file storage, photo streams, iTunes-in-the-cloud, whatever. Oh, and for each new iOS device or Mac you buy, you get another 20GB for free."

And we all know why there's no 'normal' storage on iCloud. It's because anyone can get an iCloud account, even if they own zero Apple products. They can use the mail via their browser and they can sync bookmarks between their Windows PCs, but the 5GB storage is only meaningful for syncing iLife and iWork documents, backups, and photo stream (all of which require that you're an iOS or OS X user). You can bet that's why they dropped iDisk.

How are people using so much space? My iPad backup is 1.6GB (18 months of accumulated data) and my iPhone is 82MB.

It's quite easy, we were using the extra space for something other than iDevice backups, which is why this is so dumb. Without an easy way of accessing the space (let alone the lost public-facing web feature, I used my extra space for a few small home-built websites), we really have no means to make use of Apple's "gift".

I got the email and have another year with 25Gb of iCloud storage. Now if only I could figure out how to take advantage of it. If only iCloud was a bit more like Dropbox or Skydrive, I could actually upload files to it.

Geez. How many times do we have to friggin' say it?

my back account says that I have paid 80 euros to Apple, and the iOS or Mac iCloud storage plan say that on 30 sept 2013 I will be charger 80 euros, so?

Apple is space efficient! The complainers aren't using it!

If Apple is able to backup my 64 GB iPhone with only 15 GB, and back it up completely, obviously Apple is being extremely efficient with space.

Think about it, if 5 million people own the app angry birds, Apple doesn't need to keep 5 million copies on their server. Apple only needs a list of the apps and songs you have in your phone and then a very small data file to show where you have them and things like top scores and accomplishments. In this way, Apple is able to completely restore your iPhone in the event of data loss by using this method, and do it for some people with less than 5GB of space.

Those that are griping about a free gift of 25 GB don't realize what a blessing this is. I had just cut down my backup from 16 gig 14 gigs to save myself $20 in the coming year, but now I can have my iPhone completely restored with a 16 GB backup, and I save myself $40.

And for those that are wondering why Apple is doing this, obviously they screwed up when they gave MobileMe users an extension through 2050, so in this way they give these people a free year of service, and come out the winners in the PR department.

What's more interesting to me is they ran their date change script in the production environment without first testing it in a lab. Makes me wonder if shoddy IT practices at iCloud Central are behind recent outages, and some new iPhone 5 purchasers discovering rather unfortunately that their iCloud backups are no good.

They offer different services. Since Apple currently doesn't offer any iDisk replacement, there is really nothing to compare against. That makes "better" a bit meaningless. Current iCloud storage is more or less like storing files in GMail attachments if you want to use it for arbitrary files.

However, since you brought up your "25gigs free with skydrive" right after "better services", making it sound like the amount of free space is crucial: You are conveniently leaving out that Dropbox is only 2GB for free (without participating in pyramid schemes or spamming your social networks etc.) and that new SkyDrive users only get 7GB. Like Apple's 25GB now, the bonus don't apply to new users...

Every single time you wonder why apple does anything, remember that there is only one reason:

They figure that it will increase total profits. :p

Exactly. We figure out how to use the extra space... fill it up... and then be forced to pay for the upgrade when it expires
