Apple Giving Some Mac Mini Customers a Free Upgrade

Apple has informed some customers who recently ordered a Mac mini with an M4 chip that has yet to ship that it will be upgrading their order to an equivalent version of the new Mac mini with an M6 chip at no additional cost.

Apple's email to customers:
Thank you for your recent Mac order. We know you're looking forward to receiving your purchase.

As you may know, Apple recently announced the new Mac mini. Since your order has yet to ship, we automatically upgraded you to the new Mac mini at no additional cost.

Given the Mac mini now starts at $899 instead of $799 in the U.S., some customers are effectively receiving a $100 discount on the new model.

One customer on social media was delighted to learn that they would not only be receiving the new Mac mini at no additional cost, but also saw their delivery estimate bumped up from October to September. On the other hand, a student emailed us to complain that their delivery estimate was pushed back by several weeks as a result of the free upgrade, as they said they need the computer imminently for their studies. The student said Apple did not offer them a choice to accept or decline the free upgrade.

Apple announced the new Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro chip options this week, alongside a new Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra chip options. Both new Macs are available to pre-order now ahead and launch on Tuesday, September 22.

The previous-generation Mac mini was released in November 2024.

Maybe should have ordered in plenty of time for the semester to start, like back in June.

With how detail-centric Tim is I’m surprised they sell Macs like this now instead of showing that the M4 is out of stock. With paying M4 prices Apple is making less money.

First couple of years I was in college was at a community college and they had a sign hanging up in the registrar’s office.

“A lack of prior planning on your part does not constitute and emergency on our part”.

So many people don’t understand this. Things happen. Orders get delayed. Traffic. Flight delays. It happens to me this morning on my way to a Dr appointment. Since I left the house an hour early, I was still 45 min early for my appointment.

Better to push yourself up front and get your stuff together then to sit around and wait at the mercy of others because circumstances dictated terms.

FWIW, I DID order a computer in June with a September delivery window (Granted, this was for a Mac Studio, something most students wouldn't have on their shelf, but still).

I would like to say “well that’s surprisingly kind and a move of integrity for Apple”… but it’s probably to help soften the PR blow of a $300 price increase for base 256gb SSD and no RAM bump along with (as someone said) to help prevent a return process hassle.

I wish I could be more optimistic about the current practice guidelines @ Apple lol

Clearly M4 Minis are in short supply at least partially because they shifted production to the M5s. So it's not a huge surprise they'd just shift some outstanding orders to the units they have more of -- and head off exchanges in the process.
 
How weird is this?

  • Original Launch: The M4 Mac mini originally debuted as a massive value hit at $599 for 16GB/256GB. [1, 2]
  • The Storage Pivot: Apple temporarily discontinued the 256GB option, raising the effective entry-level price to $799 for a 16GB/512GB model. [1, 2]
  • The Price Hike: The 16GB/256GB configuration was later brought back, but due to component market shifts, Apple adjusted the price upward to $799 for the 256GB base model. [1, 2]
Went from $599 to $799 for m4 Mac mini, but that extra $200 got you +256 for a period of time (parts shortage?)
Later they made it 256gb again, but kept the $799 price hike 😀

I haven't kept up.

People who were totally willing to pay $800 for an m4 16/256 in latter 2026 deserve (but are not owed) the free $100 off for m6 base (that would be $899 but is now $799 given the free upgrade) IMO.

it's also weird to me they sort of announced a month in advance the new Mac mini. I guess being OOS they want to make sure people are aware the product line isn't on the chopping block or something? Cool product to debut the new 2nm M6 in, too.

Apple didn’t start back to school promos until mid July and some back to school sales tax holidays didn’t start until later July. Some people have also been saving up for a computer.

We don’t know the specifics for this particular student — they might’ve simply procrastinated or were waiting for these other benefits. Personally, I planned the head with a computer purchase in May for a college age child but not everyone is in that situation.
 
Apple still can walk the prices back, years ago when purchasing a G5 and cinema display Apple lowered the price for the display and they sent me a check for the difference.
It’s possible Apple could do this again and restore the $699 price at least.🙄💰
That would go a long way for restoring customer relations.

Better than dealing with a bunch of customer order cancellations and returns.
