...the money Apple gets from their sales goes into funding these services and updates. So the service is not really "free", you already paid for it.


Which, from a consumer's standpoint, is an infinitely better business model than Google's "service is free because you're the product and we're hoarding and selling all your personal information."

Except WhatsApp isn't ad based at all - and that seems to be one of the conditions of the sale that it remains so...

There was nothing in the sale that contractually obligates Facebook to honor Whatsapp's policies. If you think Facebook will forever maintain Whatsapp as privacy-focused and financed solely by a $1/year subscription fee I have a bridge for sale you might be interested in.

Are we conveniently forgetting that WhatsApp charges for service?

That kept the company in the black when they operated on a shoestring budget with 35 employees. How far's that going to take them under the shadow of Facebook and a $19billion acquisition price?
 
Apple should release an ad based Windows and Android iMessage, make some revenue, extend their reach :D
