The iWatch is so bad, it will fail and samsung will make a much better iWatch.

Just joking.
If an iWatch comes its unique features will be an enormous amount of sensors.
Think nike fuelband, with some heartrate monitoring.
Cook said that sensors is the next big thing.

For sure iWathc can work as an extension to the iPhone.
The new notification api is destined for it (or why else should be there an api that allows to get informed about all notifications and a mechansim to forward them with bluetooth).

For sure the new today screen in notifications is a perfect iWatch/Siri implementation. Especially if you realize how much more effort it is to create a text describing weather, traffic informations and calender informations if some simple icons would be much faster to implement.
For sure there will be an option to read this aloud.

Think also about the new text2speech apis in ios. You don't need it for standard usecases if the user sees your screen. You need it if the user doesn't see your screen.

The most important thing for apple with iWatch will be
-> tell a good story to tell you how it improves your digital life.
-> the story must be good enough so that devs jump on the device and extend it (because hardware is nothing after a specific amount of time, software is the only thing that matters)
-> have it usable and easy connected into the apple ecosphere.

And i am sure that apple can do this, mostly because of one thing, apple can take as long time for it as they need. They don't need to rush like google with glass (wich is at least for now a big fail), they will instead take longer time to make it as perfect as possible so it is a big step for copycats like samsung and google to copy the overall experience.
And only IF they can do it so much better and IF they see there is a big hurdle for copycats, they will release it.

They will not risk another android copycat so easily

If I can call my car over to me using it that would be good. Although making the iOS iWatch interface with the Google car might be an issue. Although Knight Rider had all this sussed ages ago!

The most important aspect for Apple is to ensure the design is attractive to multiple generations of people and adds something the other sport bands and smart watches do not already do. (The Pebble is cool, but clunky looking and cheap feeling, and the Fuel Band is good, but not great and incomplete so Apple already has good entering points.) If they do that everything else will follow.

Probably not call your car... yet. It's just learning how to parallel park itself. BUT I wouldn't be too surprised if carmakers that support iOS allow the iWatch to be used as the car's fob so the driver no longer has to carry a separate one around.

If you have a car w/ keyless entry and ignition you know how big the fobs can get. The current BMW Comfort Access fob is about the same size as the original iPod shuffle.

I use my iPhone and don't waste money on a watch.

Yeah, that's what everyone says when they see my watch and ask me the time because they don't want to bother pulling theirs out of their pocket (or purse). Watches are still incredibly useful, even for those that don't wear them. I love wearing a watch, feel naked without one, this whole concept is interesting, I can't wait to see how it all plays out and what the functions and features they might include in something you strap around your wrist.

So this iWatch could be the total and complete interface for ie your iPhone; hardly any need to get it out in the open anymore. No more fumbling trying to retrieve your iDevice from pocket or purse, while out and about. Practically hands-free. Neat!

I'm warming up to this idea.

Getting a phone out of your pocket is such a hardship....

Not really, IFTTT does the job simply and well on my Pebble. It texts me the hi and low for the day and the next day as well as current conditions and tomorrows conditions. All the info fits on the screen. As for calendar, I get notifications on my watch about upcoming events (reminders set to 2 days prior and 1 day prior) all in text form from my app.

I only use Breitling ;)

Actually, not to sound snobbish ;) But this is my biggest issue, I have a gorgeous top-end Breitling that was an engagement gift from my wife, and I'd be in the doghouse if I took that off for an Apple device. She'd probably take off her engagement ring, LOL.

I'll still buy one if they make it tho

Actually there was mention of several car manufacturers turning towards Siri integration during the WWDC keynote. So we may not really need to worry about interfacing with Google cars. And speaking of Google cars would some have the latest version of Android and others not? Personally I like On Star. It works and you get a live person to talk to.

It's not that taking a phone out of a pocket is hardship. That's being quite melodramatic, no? It's that -- as technology has always done, it presents an easier, more efficient way of doing the same task. If an iWatch can do that then it will be a great gadget.

Also, there are times when it's impolite or not practical to take a phone out, a watch solves that issue too.

Don't hate technology just because it's not what you are use to now or because it sounds like something you rejected in the past, even though it's different than that particular item. You'll sound like a grumpy old 20 y.o.

I was in a similar situation when the Fuelband came out. But my S.O. was more than happy for me to leave my dress watch on the dresser if it meant a leaner, healthier me, which the FB has helped me motivate myself to do. I only wear my good watch to important meetings and evening social events. Otherwise it's just me and my FB.

ULackFreakingVision

iWorshipApple, anomie, an Apple fanboy talking. ;)

Even without any knowledge of 'what' Apple will come up with you call this "vision". In my profession good ideas and vision comes along with creativity and concrete presentations, not based on rumors.

So yes, I don't give a damn about rumors, I'm more interested in what Apple will come up with, and the "vision" of the watch was founded in the 15th century.

:apple:

Can we just allow them to release the thing first before we make judgment on something that doesn't even exist yet? I wonder how many of the clowns who are prematurely saying the iWatch is rubbish are also the same ones who said the iPad was just an over sized iPod and would never sell... we all know how that turned out and I guarantee 90% of those people now either own an iPad or a tablet of some kind.

You know the name of the site you are on?

Interesting posting. Personally I think an Apple iWatch should be not about gadgets but about simplicity together with a strong focus on what an watch primarily function is: showing the time.

If it will be a gadget where you can play videogames on I'm not interested, it's for kids and apple fanboys but not for me. If it will be grand looking and showing the time without giving to much light in the dark like normal watches don't do as well I might be interested.

Secondly, I, of course, think that because it's an electronic devise it should be able to do more then just show me the time. But whatever that might be, like pulse measurements and maybe an option to "feel" some kind of vibration when some-one is calling you then it's extremely important what the battery life would be, an iWatch that you need to recharge each single day is a no-no for me. I even find is quite frustrating that my iPhone 5 needs to be charged each single day.

Time will tell.

but more importantly its killer feature: how will Apple convince people that this is (will be) the must-have wristwatch.

I already know some of the features I need in a must-have wristwatch. Nobody has created it yet. If Apple creates it with the features I want, I'll buy an Apple wristwatch. It has nothing to do with Apple advertising.

For example, the Pebble is great, lets you see texts and notifications from your phone to your watch - but it doesn't include speakers or a microphone! I can't answer a call on it! Actually, I can - just you can't talk until you bring out your phone.

The Pebble doesn't have the technology of the Jawbone Up or the Nike Fuelband either. If I could monitor biometrics (my sleep time, heart rate, how many steps I walk in a day, my nutrition, etc) these are other things I'd like for a watch.

Don't hate technology just because it's not what you are use to now or because it sounds like something you rejected in the past, even though it's different than that particular item. You'll sound like a grumpy old 20 y.o.

Grumpy or not, the watch all ready exist.....for a long time I may add. The only relevant question that remains, will it be something entirely different?

how will Apple convince people that this is (will be) the must-have wristwatch.

Probably the same way it convinced people that the iPod was the must-have music player; that the iPad was the must-have tablet; that the iPhone was the must-have smartphone: by making an attractive, easy to use product that enhances people's lives. 90% of Apple product user are not techie gadget freaks, but they do embrace products that make doing their day-to-day tasks easier.

So what does Apple have to do to get people to buy an iWatch? Be Apple.

In other news, people are already thinking an iWatch will fail even before it is announced.

Same with the iPad. People are already thinking the iPad would fail even before it is announced

Grumpy or not, the watch all ready exist.....for a long time I may add. The only relevant question that remains, will it be something entirely different?

Not in the form that people want. I wear a watch every day and it doesn't do everything I want a watch to do yet. The Pebble watch is closer, but not there yet.

Grumpy or not, the watch all ready exist.....for a long time I may add. The only relevant question that remains, will it be something entirely different?

The watch has existed...not the smart watch. The "dumb" cell phone existed for a long time too. Would you have made the same argument about smart phones as you do smart watches?

If Apple wanted to come out with a "dumb" watch then there is no tech barriers there. Heck I had a calculator in my watch 30 years ago. Obviously that's not what Apple would be bringing to market. I think you know that.

Are you seriously going to talk to your watch out on the street and then holding it to your right ear to hear what the other person replies? (when you're wearing it on your left hand that is) :D:D:D:D

I think it would be more handy to let the iWatch display things you like to see quickly so you don't need to find your iPhone which might be in your suitcase or within you jacket.
That's for now the only thing I can think of that would be nice and handy...

- when running you're able to see quickly how far you've run so far and/or how hard you're walking, hack, maybe even see a turn by turn direction to the street you're walking to.

- see the time (obviously) and mayby it can warn you how much time you've left before going to the meeting of any kind...

- and I can imagine with the knowledge of pulse measurement, heart-rate and stuff it will be able to send an warning to someone or let your iPhone call 911 as an option. It could be a lifesaver literally when it summons an ambulance when you have an hearth attack.

Other then then, nah...
