So there's a chance that useless charging pad in my Camaro will get a purpose? Except that of course, it doesn't have wireless CarPlay, so I guess my wife can use it.

What's the point in wireless charging?

It presents the opportunity for Apple to completely remove that last remaining port, I get that - but that isn't happening this year. So, what's the point?

It's simply more inconvenient than a wire for travel, and provides absolutely no benefit in the home.

Assuming proprietary  Charge, of course.

You probably wish phones connected via ethernet too, right?

Until Wireless charging is properly distant/remote it's pointless.

Walk in a room and it charges.

Putting it on a pad is stupid.
1. You can't use it at the same time... ie in bed / on a couch etc. Or as a phone.. unless you want to stick your head on the table.
2. External battery charging won't work
3. You'd have to carry round a pad to charge ( if this was the only chargin method )

They just need Fast charging... give me 90% in 5 minutes. There are batteries in development that charge almost instantly.

Over the air charging isn't revolutionary? I'd say that's a pretty big deal.

And remember that this will just be the first iteration of many. You can't really significantly advance any technology until you actually have lots of products out there and learn from customer feedback, or find problems that wouldn't have shown up during testing.

It's like complaining that 802.11b was not released as 802.11ac, so we should just not do it at all.

Am I the only one thinking that, without a MAJOR scientific breakthrough, general remote charging is just Star Trek sci-fi stuff?
And any startup coming up with this is just a set up by scammers to make quick money from stupid investors and run?

It's not stupid. I love just popping my Apple Watch on the charger and it's charging while I sleep. Would love to do the same with my phone. All other times I can charge with the cable. You can use it and charge at the same time - use a BT headset.

I think you mean "breakthrough." :D

Having the option to put the phone on a  Watch-style puck for charging is a nice option for a desktop where you want to keep loose cable clutter to a minimum, but for most users, it adds little or no benefit.

I think the real challenge of over-the-air wireless charging will be for it to not interfere with Bluetooth, WiFi and NFC. Oh, and not microwaving our brains (or our junk) in the process.

I don't think they will include it this year. They will save some stuff for the iphones to come afterwards..

This iphone will probably sell from the design and display alone.
And new tech is already needed for the new design to work.

But .. but .. I'll have to wrap my personal bits in aluminum foil to keep the cancer out!!!

Aluminum foil isn't going to cut it. You need "LeadWare" brand underwear-with 15mm of radiation blocking goodness!

P.S. Don't believe all that clap-trap about lead being poisonous. It's all lies! Lies I tell you!

THE Apple Watch is charged wirelessly!
Why can't we use the Apple Watch wireless charger on the iPhone?

If they waited all this time to come out with an inductive charging solution with a mat, I will laugh.

Phil Schiller:

This time Apple literally has gone to the mat for iPhone users.

Big market opening up for mobile mat chargers cars, etc. and a mat dongle.

Is wireless charging that hard? Literally everyone else has had it for years!

5 groups ?..how many engineers does it take...

I don't get it. It's a dock. It's not wireless... not fussed about it. I'd rather my wired EarPods didn't stop functioning every six months.

It does seem to imply Apple is putting an inordinate amount of effort into this doesn't it? Draw whatever conclusion you will from that but I don't see something that is only on par with Samsung. That much talent and resource isn't needed to pull that off. Conversely it may not be as advanced as some people would like to see.

See Hump case, Apl Tv remote for guidance...i would not expect greater than Samsung effort honestly

Wireless charging thankfully is pretty pointless, not that hard to plug in a fast USB-Charger , easy in fact 55 minutes later full charge ( never use the Qi built into my 950 its pointless to do so)

Maybe they can combine charger with Alexa-like device.

with Siri? good one.
