So there's a chance that useless charging pad in my Camaro will get a purpose? Except that of course, it doesn't have wireless CarPlay, so I guess my wife can use it.

NOT having CarPlay is a huge bonus...when I buy a new car I'm going to make thien rip out Carplay and Android auto or give me a HUGE freaking discount for wasting money on features I will never use. All I need it BT and a speaker system or alternatively an Anker SoundCore speaker for audio and handfree.

It does seem to imply Apple is putting an inordinate amount of effort into this doesn't it? Draw whatever conclusion you will from that but I don't see something that is only on par with Samsung. That much talent and resource isn't needed to pull that off. Conversely it may not be as advanced as some people would like to see.
My guess.
Of course it could be advantageous to have 5 competing groups onto something urgent and radically new, but a well managed process wouldn't have that only a couple of months before mass production.
They should have tested, stabilised and pre-prod. scaled the best method by now - so I am afraid we have another PPP (perpetual pipeline-project) by now if this rumor is serious.

Great. I expect Apple will have at least four different kinds of wireless charger: iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Pro, iPhone SE and iPhone 7s. I figure some might come with USB-C, at least one might come with lightening port and the other might come with micro-USB (to be compatible with Powerbeats 3). Now, where can I send in my resume for a job as an analyst? /s

Of course long range wireless charging would be awesome but what I most want is a smaller phone with bigger screen or 5.5 is fine with OLED curved screen. I can't never have a 5.8 hell naw

I hope that having entertained that idea for a while they just elegantly drop it, as I do not want any charging mats/pads sitting around and even less so having something emitting wireless power & fluffing up my cats.

If they release a charging method that is nothing more than what Samsung has I will personally eat my own head. Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?

There are more miracles I've never seen before like the never ending pipeline of Cook. Surprise me :D

I would be REALLY happy if I can just use my Apple Watch charger to juice up my iPhone 8.

5 groups on wireless charging
20 groups on advertising
½ a group on computers

Funny you say that. We'll see how good the new version of Car Play is. It was ok in the loaner I had last year, but prefer the standard system in my VW.

If they use QI that would be a really great move. Would love for the one wireless charging standard.

I miss wireless charging on my phone. Wish more phones had it!

Apple is widely expected to launch its first iPhone with wireless charging capabilities later this year, but rumors remain conflicting about whether the feature will be based on inductive technology, which would require a charging pad or puck, or a truly wireless long-range charging solution.

Apple recently joined the Wireless Power Consortium, a group of over 200 companies backing the Qi wireless charging standard, perhaps signaling that it is leaning towards an inductive solution. After all, the Apple Watch uses Qi, albeit a tweaked version that only works with Apple's own charger.

Qi, pronounced "chee," is capable of scaling from less than 1 watt to more than 2,000 watts of power, making the standard more than adequate enough for charging any smartphone. Its backing members include Samsung, LG, HTC, Qualcomm, Dell, Canon, Sony, Huawei, Apple supplier Luxshare, and others.

Apple is known to test many different technologies behind closed doors, some of which never see the light of day. Reuters today, citing "a person with knowledge of the matter," said there are still "at least five different groups" working on wireless charging technology within the company ahead of new iPhones.

Just three months ago, Apple was said to have more than 10 different iPhone prototypes under development, so it could be experimenting with different charging solutions for future devices; however, with iPhone 8 production expected to begin relatively soon, Apple has likely already finalized the hardware.

Apple will reportedly begin production of its upcoming iPhones as early as next quarter, so the first part leaks will likely begin to surface over the next few months, which should give us a better idea of what to expect.

Apple is rumored to launch a 5.8-inch iPhone with an edge-to-edge OLED display, alongside updated 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models, in September. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said all three iPhones will feature wireless charging, while some reports have said only the OLED model will be capable.

I just know they're gonna have proprietary charging and it's going to be a pain in the ass if you have qi charging already

Agreed. Apple will have some form of their own unique charging platform. Likely and hopefully more convenient than just a charging mat. Leave it to Apple to hopefully redefine what we have for future expectations.
