So you're saying Steve was responsible for all the innovation? You do realize there's a huge team working on products and one man just cannot run a company. Steve no doubt was a great man but saying he was responsible for everything at Apple isn't right. And btw Steve had planned products for years ahead, Steve was involved in the products you see today.

Yes I hereby give credit to the other apple employees. Yes Steve probably had his hand in some of these recent products. However the man is dead and there is a new CEO. Hello Tim Cook. So anything Steve may have wanted, would be overridden.

Agreed. I never accused apple of completely ripping us off, nor do I think the mini is 'bad' or defective. Hell, I might even buy one bc I would like smaller portable device so I can carry it everywhere w me. Apple is a business and they want to make money, simple as that.

I concur...

It's only my long standing, decades old enthusiasm for Apple that drives me to report my actual experiences of recent times. Calling them out on obvious money grabs, component & feature selection issues, and letting product quality slide when they could easily maintain the stellar quality of years gone by.

I have no problem with premium pricing, as long as we get a premium product, built to a high quality standard, not just smoke and mirrors marketing.

agreed and that is why there is no retina display on our mini.

There isn't one because the screens in that aspect ratio and PPI simply aren't being manufactured fast or well enough yet. Yields are still low for retina screens, especially ones that aren't in the horrible 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio.

You all saw how long its taking to get up to production with the rMBP's and how long it took to get acceptable screens for the 9.7", why in the world does everyone in this forum think that the tablet market is just taking screens that already exist? These tablets (the whole gamut) are tying up the entire production capabilities of screen makers while at the same time pushing the tech to the max. IGZO is the next breakthrough but look how hard it is to produce them in sufficient quantity.

You basically think apple could not attain the high volume of retina screens needed. Unfortunately in today's society and it being a recession, money talks. Apple can almost command whatever they want. If after all that, apple should have just waited until the spring to release the mini. They've waited SO long already. We all pretty much thought there wasn't going to be a mini anyways.

You have your opinion and I have mine.

Yes at one point, Apple stood for putting out the BEST possible device they could. Now, everything is driven by time or money. They now have billions, how about they 'give' back to their customers now.

Because they don't exist.

Yeah, tell that to the PowerBook G5.
If after all that, apple should have just waited until the spring to release the mini.
So you're saying they should have released nothing and missed out on millions of sales to perfectly satisfied customers...just to wait around for LCD technology and prices to fall on a single spec that no competing product offers and most people don't consider a dealbreaker? All while leaving anyone who wants a smaller tablet left with only Android as an option? Worst idea ever.

Thanks for your opinion. I'm not going there again with you. Nothing you say will change my mind and no argument I give you will change your mind.

Pointless now.

Yes at one point, Apple stood for putting out the BEST possible device they could. Now, everything is driven by time or money.

Once again, you are romanticising the past. No company is only interested in making the absolute BEST device, there are lots of other considerations.

The first Macbook Air in 2008, fantastic looking device but it wasn't as powerful as the rest of the line, people moaned about that.

What about all the other MP3 players that did video years before the iPod, or even added a colour screen, people moaned about that.

What about the iPad 2, everyone was expecting a retina screen, but it didn't have one, people moaned about that.

How about not offering a Super Drive in portables for years while they were available for the desktops, people moaned about that.

Obviously I'm a fan of what Apple does, they release great products, but there have always been compromises.

CUPERTINO, California—October 25, 2012—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2012 fourth quarter ended September 29, 2012. The Company posted quarterly revenue of $36.0 billion and quarterly net profit of $8.2 billion, or $8.67 per diluted share.

Ummm, that doesn't look like 400% profit...

Since you like numbers. Here's this article:

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57512904-37/iphone-5-may-cost-apple-$167.50-to-build-says-one-estimate/

iPhone 5 which is far smaller and light than the iPad mini and can obviously do everything that an iPad does costs only $167.50. The iPhone 4 cost only $112. This probably based on what components cost individually.

Apple is approximately making 400% profit off of each BASE model iPhone 5. The 32g and 64g prob only costs $20 more.

Apple would NEVER want it released as to what 'discounts' they're getting from china. People would be outraged if they really knew how much apple was making on each device. Everyone knows it costs a small fraction to manufacture products over there.

400% profit per device.

refer to my earlier post. people just don't want to believe how much money apple makes off of us.

400% profit per device.
Again, no. It's one thing to have that opinion going in, but when confronted by the math, to continue repeating this nonsense is downright crazy.

It is mathematically impossible for Apple to make 400% profit on the iPhone and post a 22% profit at the corporate level, with iPhones accounting for roughly half of their revenue.

Carriers pay Apple less than $200 per device in upfront subsidy. The guy who thinks that corporations can get anything for a few cents if they buy a lot somehow believes that cellular carriers are paying $450 to Apple like a schmuck off the street?
people just don't want to believe how much money apple makes off of us.
The number's right in front of you. $8.2 billion on $36 billion in revenue. 22.7% for the quarter, 22% for the year. About the same as Google.

You just don't want to believe how off-base you are.

They have been predictable in their upgrades, but beoming erratic in other parts, for example: their release schedule, ipod touch pricing and iPad names.

Being predictable is not necessay a bad thing, depending what you are talking about, apple predictability in release schedule is what made them great.

I am guessing what the OP really wants to say is apple is getting boring, with no innovative ideas, just incremental spec upgrades, which is mostly true, but for now the it doesn't matter to apple because people are still buying into the spec upgrades alone. Whether they will do that in the long run is a different matter.

Between 2001 and 2007 Apple put out iterative products.

Between 2007 and 2010 Apple put out iterative products.

Game changers don't come around often, so you can't expect it every year.

Like the bolded statement says, there is too high of expectations set on Apple, and they can't revolutionize their product lineup every single year.

Yes I hereby give credit to the other apple employees. Yes Steve probably had his hand in some of these recent products. However the man is dead and there is a new CEO. Hello Tim Cook. So anything Steve may have wanted, would be overridden.

Actually only under the last 2 years of Steve's reign there were some products with lower margin or better value like the iPad 2/3 (lower margin than the iPhone), MacBook Air 2011 (lower margin than the MacBook Pro / old MacBook Air). ;)

And now, with the stock price in the stratosphere, Apple wants to increase their margin again, e.g. MacBook Pro Retina 13", iPad mini LTE or any storage larger than 16GB, iPhone 5 (unlocked price +10% in some places like Hong Kong), lightning accessories (e.g. the Camera Connection Kit has been split into 2 with even higher price, i.e. price more than doubled), 2012 Mac mini's non-server higher config (no more discrete graphics), no more self RAM upgrade on 2012 iMac 21". :(

It does seems that way but you never what ios7 might bring.

Especially since they gave Forstall the boot we might actually see some decent UI changes that they won't bless the current mini with. "CPU A6x and better" LOL

Yeah would really like an "oh sh@t moment" like the iPhone intro.

Seems like revolutionary products died with Jobs.
