Oh and lordthistle, it's not my fault how customer service or any form of service and agreement differs from country to country, but in the UK a company that sells you defective products are by law suppose to replace them until they are fit for purpose.
As you know, we all are in the mighty EU. And we share many commercial laws. The true difference between here and there is made by the people. And that's why I said that I wish I lived there.

You're asking them for $800 because you had some bad luck. You know, they could just take the computer in and say that they will repair whatever issue you are having and not give you a replacement, or an upgrade for that matter.

I've worked out how much it will cost, and to upgrade with the student discount from the base model 15", I will need to pay around an extra £400. I replied to her email saying that the price of the 17" is a but pricy and that I shouldn't have to upgrade in order to get the ' Pro ' features ( poor quality screen ), but she hasn't replied yet.

I completely agree. That sounds a little greedy.

Where have I said that I EXPECT or SHOULD get it for free ? NO WHERE ! I can't belive some people, really I posted this thread asking wether or not I SHOULD PAY £400+ to get the 17", even though it is pricy. I have not said Apple suck they are breaking the law, and they SHOULD give me it for free.

I suggest you re-read the post and get your facts right, before accusing a far less than rich hard working student who asks for nothing, of being greedy !

They are asking you the difference in price. That's it. If you don't like the screen on the 15", be aware that you're not the only one. Concerning the screen on the 17", you cannot know much because no one has ever seen one. Considering the screen on the 15" and what apple is producing nowadays, I would not add money.

And your decision is not that difficult to make. Considering that you wrote:
"I can afford to buy the 17" and still keep the 15", but I don't want to pay all that money for a Laptop ( not expecting it for free either ! )"

If you don't want, don't. If you want, since you can, buy it and then decide which one to keep. There are other people for whom the only 15" is a lot of money: since you can pay both, buy them both and sell the one you like less.

It's so simple...

I never said it was hard, I just wondered what other people though about the 17" as I have never owned a 17" laptop, therefor I don't know if it's worth the money. And the fact that I can afford it has nothing to do with it, it's debatable wether or not it's worth the money considering that most people think Apple is over priced anyway...

The decision is mine, and I think I will wait until reviews are made ( if I can still get a refund after that ), otherwise I may just get the higher 15" model as these won't be as popular and QC could possibly be better.

From what I read a few weeks ago, the 17" panel if *almost* guaranteed to be better, due to the resolution and the technology used within it, but this technology so who know what can happen.

As for every other piece of Apple hardware, the real question is whether or not you want to use Mac OS. If the answer is yes, then there is no sense in asking if their hardware is worth the price (even if I agree with you: the high-level 15" and the 17" might cost less).

As a personal comment: do not ever believe to reviews made around apple hardware, because, as - I am sure - you already know, the apple community has a way-too-large number of zealots. When some objective review are done and negative comments assigned, people start saying that the reviewer has some mental problems. If you are looking for a gorgeous screen, there are other alternatives worth checking out. They are not as thin as the MBP, but the screens can be very good.

Okay, well I will not be going back to a Pc if that's what you mean ;). I'm going to have to think about it some more, and see wether it's worth upgrading the the 15" at all or just going straight for the 17"... or neither !

I await a reply from my representative about the returns issue because i may just wait form them to be in stores so that i can get a look my self.

OK, I reread your posts. I suppose I just misunderstood, but when say you are awaiting a response from Apple to your comment on how you "shouldn't have to upgrade" for the pro features and say "I was kind of expecting a slighter bigger discount", it sounds like you are asking for a handout. That's all. If that's not your intent, then I apologize.

On a side note, I got a MBP in June 2007 and the screen quality was terrible. Horrific yellowing at the bottom. There were many posts on these forums about other users having bad luck with screens just as I was. I suspect you have a bit of an eye for imperfections like I do. I love Apple, but if you are looking for a great screen that you will have no qualms with, I would suggest another manufacturer. Even in laptops with the same model number and screen specs, Apple doesn't always use the same panels. They usually have a few different suppliers. I'm sure other manufacturers do this too, but the fact is that Apple doesn't have a reputation for great laptop screens. Betting on the 17 seems like too much of a gamble if you ask me. If you can, I'd wait until people start getting them and hear what they have to say. Read hands-on reviews, go to the store, etc.

I know that's the only problem that the 17" holds, not knowing what it's really like. I'm still undecided what to get, but I only have got until this Friday to get a refund from the current unit I hold possession of.
