I read all these posts and some people don't realize there hasn't been much Apple vs. Microsoft stuff for a long time.

Steve Jobs and Bill Gates both said this a few years ago. What's the surprise ?

Apple and Microsoft are closer than some people think.

I'd use Windows 95 if it had drivers and app support! I still use 2000 on a daily basis. Call me crazy but I'd rather use legacy windows versions (2000 and lower) than windows XP/V/7/8.. but it's not really possible to in this day and age.

If you seriously want to use any 9x based windows OS then your absolutely crazy. The only one you mentioned that is anywhere close to as stable as xp/vista/7 is 2000 as it is NT based like xp/vista/7. 95, 98, and ME are all based on the windows 9x kernel which had horrible memory management (aka none at all) and thats why it crashed and bsoded all the time and why programs would always crash. Windows nt on the other hand is 100 times more stable. Microsoft got smart and made the consumer versions of windows also based on NT starting with XP. Windows 2000 was only available in professional and server. Windows ME was the consumer version. This is when microsoft realized they needed to dump 9x.

At completely ridiculous rates. They wanted several dollars per device on just one patent. Most patents are worth no more than a few cents. Even good patents for real things and not vague patents.

Again, like Samsung wanting $20 per device for a few of the many patents that make up the technology in a $10 baseband chip?

Some people can't accept that things can change over 20+ years. The two companies hardly even compete directly anymore. Apple is all about consumer and Microsoft is primarily about business and IT infrastructure software solutions.

I was talking about in the smartphone tablet market and you know it. And if you look at TRENDS and not size you can see that apple IS in fact squishing MSFT on all fronts. Android is making gains on apple in tablet and smartphones.

I find it funny that you guys think that MSFT came to apple and asked for the patents. I would put my money on Apple came up to them and was like "take these patents so we can play nice and let's kill android together". Hell they already did all that surface stuff without the patents.

This case is about smartphones and tablets, and Microsoft's new UI spans phones, tablets, notebooks, and desktops, so no, I didn't know that you were referring only to smartphones. Microsoft has shown from past history it is willing to throw a lot of money at a market, even one where it is losing market share. Their huge markets in Office and Windows give it the flexibility to keep plugging away with Windows Phone even though it hasn't gained much traction. Apple is in less of a position to "squish" it than Google.

It's possible that Apple came to Microsoft and told it not to infringe upon its patents. Since Microsoft also has patents that are of use to Apple, the two agreed upon a cross-licensing deal. Apple and Nokia did the same, but mostly because Nokia won a court case on another matter. Surely other business considerations came into play, but the fact of the matter is they came to an agreement under which Microsoft has limited use rights on certain Apple design patents that let it incorporate those designs into Windows operating systems. It's also entirely possible that Microsoft came to Apple out of its own business motives. It may have an interest in having a good relationship with Apple. Without knowing what went on between the two, we don't know for sure.

Likely the cross-licensing deal was in place before the Surface was announced.

I think the Keyboard is also a patent that MSFT is paying Apple for, so I'm not so sure I would call it an iPad killer yet. Also, if Microsoft had to make it look like the iPad just to sell it, then it really isn't an iPad killer, but more like an iPad-Step-Brother. Microsoft may as well call it the iStep or iPaid Apple to make this. No?

Not really, remember how everyone has compared Windows ____ (Insert your version here) to Apple and talked about how blantantly they copied ______ (insert feature here). Now, think about how many copies of OSX have been sold in that time frame versus Windows...

MS licenses to manufacturers. It's very rare for a single manufacturer to hold a majority of the market (see smartphone market, ie - Android beating iOS). In reality this has very little to do with the quality of the product. To borrow from Gates, as long as it's "good enough" and the manufacturer puts their weight behind (advertising, brand recognition, etc.). It is possible that while not killing the iPad, it could do the same thing to Apple that PCs did back in the day.

There's more than one way for things to occur. Some of it even depends on market factors which are exactly obviously connected to the individual products themselves, so all that to say, next year should be an exciting year in the tech world one way or the other!

It's not that simple.

No - it's not simple. Further - this doesn't include the fact that Samsung would be losing revenue on their patent and giving up/devaluing their IP.

I am sure there's a whole slew of arguments that can come from debating if trade dress patents and the like are comparable to technology patents.

I say the same thing when people say to me that they would rather continue to run Windows XP than go to Windows 7. They are the same people that also complain about security vulnerabilities in Windows XP. Or, they are the type of person that would get Windows 7 and turn off the UAC.

I'm going to doubt the Surface is going to cause the iPad any harm. I don't think Samsung is either. Not only are many schools putting iPads in every kids hands this coming year, but almost every household in america either has an iPad, iPod or iPhone and if they don't they know someone who does and want one.

I agree with your last statement, "Some of it even depends on market factors which are exactly obviously connected to the individual products themselves, so all that to say, next year should be an exciting year in the tech world one way or the other!" I think next year will be exciting to see what all of the competitors put out on the market, now that everything is moving to smaller better, more portable technology.

Wow, I didn't realize that I wasn't entitled to a personal opinion. I didn't say windows 95 was better, I said I'd use it. I prefer the 95/98 interface to modern ones. This is my preference. Mellow out.

P.S. Who was talking stability? I didn't ask for a break down of the history of Windows releases. I know the history.

Um, no....they can't. Microsoft is definitely down the past few years, but you'd be pretty stupid to ignore them in the future. They have the people, experience, and most importantly capital to come back and bite you in a big way if you aren't careful. Having said that, I don't think surface is going to be super successful.

Um, yeah... I've been a huge Apple fan (Since the Apple ii days) and I have to agree with you. MS still controls, what, 80% of the desktop? They have a huge presence in gaming consoles, browser, Office software, cloud computing, corporate is still pretty much all windows... so no, they aren't going anywhere anytime soon.

This is getting interesting, MSFT & AAPL vs GOOG & SSNLF.

Well, Apple could always buy Microsoft, quadruple all of its product prices, make the XBOX 360 use an N64 controller, and start selling Windows 95 as new. :D

I'm assuming your being sarcastic ;P

Some people aren't tho. Apple doesn't have the kind of money needed to buy Microsoft.

So Microsoft licensed certain technologies AND created a unique-looking OS that doesn't look like an iOS ripoff? Wow. Samsung, Microsoft is making you look bad. Yes, Microsoft. And let us not forget how bad Google looks since it makes Android.

I think he was kidding :p

Even if he wasn't. Apple doesn't have enough money to buy Microsoft.

I was kidding, but Apple would be able to buy Microsoft, right? I don't know if they have enough free cash for it, but they could do a stock trade.

Although I can't say I'll be purchasing a Surface tablet or Windows Phone anytime soon, I'm heavily invested in Apple's ecosystem, I do respect what Microsoft is doing.

Samsung...not so much.

Microsofts current worth is about 230 billion dollars. With another 68 ( last time I checked ) billion in the bank. Apple has about 100 billion sitting in the bank.

Simple math.

What about stock trades?
