The shows and star talent they've managed to assemble are actually quite good. As shows on tv+, it would be good value. Want to catch up on shows on your iPhone? Those same shows work well in portrait mode.
This particular aspect of the service is more baffling to me than everything else on it.
First: If you’re settling in to watch 5 minutes of big-budget video, is there some kind of physical barrier to rotating your phone 90°? If I’m watching something more than a few seconds long, it is equally easy to turn my phone sideways to do it as to hold it in portrait mode, and I’ve never had a problem with that.
But the other side of that is, let’s say we really are onboard for watching big-budget short-form video in portrait mode--maybe it’s easier to hold your phone like that while standing on the train, or maybe you just want to explore the format. Then
own it! Make that how the app works! It’s mobile only anyway!
Sure, you can set it up so that it’s watchable either way, just like you can have a movie that’s watchable in both 21:9 and 4:3, but you can be sure whoever directed it was doing one or the other as the “primary” and the other got put in for support.
I have trouble imagining this is any different--they either framed it for portrait and made sure it was still watchable with a bunch of unimportant action off to the sides, or they framed it for landscape but you can get away with a cramped portrait view of the action or a bunch of unimportant stuff at the top or bottom of the frame. I’m fine watching either way, just tell me which is
better.
