well done iTunes!

50,000 movies a day. It seems like a big number but if you calculate the revenue and how many people it has to get distributed to, its not all that much. But when you consider that its 50,000 straight out of the door (and beating any other competitor in this regard); there is huge growth potential here.

It's 18 million movies "sold or rented" per year. If we assume an average price of $3.00 (many more rented than sold) that is 54 million dollars per year, but it could be a lot more. That is several percent of the total iTMS revenue.

does anyone know how many blockbuster rents each day? Netflix?

Type "netflix revenue" into google. First result is a headline "Netflix revenue: US$ 996 million (2006)". Blockbuster: $4.96 billion revenue in 2001.

Some changes needed

Well, at some point, Apple is going to have to flip over to a subscription based model for TV shows. The current system of selling individual episodes and seasons only makes sense for a handful of situations. Also, they need to make sure that evey Movie availilbe in the store can be rented as the current system is extreemly frustrating.

That is a crazy amount of songs. Does this count the free songs as well?
i'm sure the number is padded with the free weekly downloads. although they are free, they are still considered a purchase based on the iTunes emailed receipt. if thats the case than they have tons of downloads a week from almost every user. but if you take away that number i'm sure the total amount of sold songs is still impressive.

I have done my part...

Not only do I LOVE renting movies on Apple TV now (2-3 times a week) I also have been buying songs and albums since the day it was released.

Had to drop my Netflix subscription and HBO to pay for it, but well worth it.

I wonder how the number of song titles sold over itunes in 2008 compares with the number of songs sold over amazon in the same period? I say this because the 5 billlion number is over the entire life of itunes store. Where as Amazon DRM free music downloads just started recently.

Personally I browse titles at the itunes store but I only buy at amazon. The quality is much better and it is DRM free.

I haven't bought any movies because they look like crap on 50" HD TV. Even Apples HD is so compressed that it it pales in comparison to HD satellite or Blu-Ray.

Good to hear that. I'm always happy with the iTunes store (except for iTunes Plus upgrade). Anyway, I kind of like to see an option for TV Shows rental.

Historically Apple has excluded the free downloads from these totals.

I guess I don't get movie downloads. With audio, it's pretty much the same thing minus the artwork and lyrics, etc. you get with the package. Don't need em.

But with a DVD rental, you get tons of extras from bloopers, to missed scenes, to interviews with the creators, to extra audio tracks, and of course surround sound. I only rent a movie when I'm planning on going somewhere and need it on my iPhone for entertainment.

I believe they were asking for rental numbers - not revenue. Netflix revenue doesn't mean a thing since I'm sure they get plenty of money from those people who, for 1 reason or another, keep 1 movie for a month or more (don't they even have that person on one of their commercials??).

I've been googling around and I can't seem to find any decent numbers...

Some stats

Here are some stats on iTMS songs sales according to a spreadsheet in which I've been keeping track:

  • Since the store opened on 28 Apr 2003, it has averaged 2.66 million songs per day.
  • Since reaching 4 billion songs around 15 Jan 2008, it has averaged 6.41 million songs per day.
  • If it maintains its current sales rate, we can expect to reach 10 billion songs around 8 Aug 2010.

:)

A lot of movies have 2 discs and when you rent a movie they only give you the first disc. that's happened to me a number of times when I did Blockbuster Total Access and it really annoyed me. I know that's just 1 piece of the puzzle but it's still a growing factor as it's really hard to fit a 2+ hr movie on a single disc along with all the extra features.

So if this is true, then why did Steve drop the AppleTV line of business from his WWDC keynote?!?

Know how Steve is Steve. He probably wanted to wait until the numbers were out, and would not surprise me if he has more up his sleeve for macworld. January is just to far away. :(

1. see if Snow Leapord would release early.
2. see how the 3g iphone sales a going
3. Apple Cinema displays people want
4. What next for the mac line (updated mini, mini tower, new aluminum macbooks, updated macbook pros).
5. What next for the ipod/ipod touch.
6. Software revisions for the next gen of iwork, ilife, etc.

I wonder if the music studios will soon allow iTunes to have a complete catalog of drm-free music like Amazon has. Competition is great, but customers should not have to choose between iTunes and Amazon based on drm.

I image netflix numbers could be dropping.... I don't used netflix, but I have a friend who does. He is not happy with them right now. NF changed there policy, that the more you rent for them, the slower they send your picks - saving the movies for the newly joined customers to chose from.

Plus he received some notice that stated they were going to shorten the time that movies can be out for without incurring a fee.

I know this is illegal, but he has resorted to renting the movie, copying the DVD, returning the original and then watching the movie at his own leisure. He had a DVD collection of over 1000 movies and still growing from when he first joined netflix in all their glory days a few years ago.

 Stocks down to $177.85/share as of 6/18 @ 10:40am, time to pump it up!

Apple stocks are down thanks to an article that was posted on CNN's front page news a couple of days ago. the activle was from another news group (not CNN) that questioned why Steve Jobbs looks so skinny and even more so at the WWDC keynote. they were questioning whether Steve's pancreatic cancer had returned, what the whipple surgery he had a few years ago did to his body, and whether or not he could still run Apple at the level he had been.

Then they allowed people to post comments. 90% told the news group to leave Steve alone and get out of his private life. Another 5% called for Steve to immediately name his replacement, the remaining 5% said that Apple has no chance and should consider folding if Steve is out of the picture.

One blogger even posted that they had the same cancer and they continue to lead a near-normal life 15 years later and still going strong.

CNN reported that after that article came out, stocks slipped on the note that Apple could be in trouble and Steve possibling leaving and his cancer returning.

Edit:

Here is the paragraph:

Why does Steve Jobs look so thin?
Much of the speculation about Steve Jobs’ rail-thin appearance at the unveiling of the new iPhone on June 9 has tended to be all or nothing.

Either his cancer has returned or he is recovering from a bout with a “common bug,” as his spokeswoman told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. “That’s all there is to it,” she said. (The talk may have unnerved investors a bit: Apple (AAPL) shares fell 4.1% on Thursday and another 2.4% by midday Friday.)

Here is the link to the article:

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/06/13/steve-jobs-life-after-the-whipple/

the blog stream afterwards is endless. Some people are just jerks for waht they wrote.....

Edit again - looks like some of the comments were removed and only the first page still exists. which gives a kind of broad overview of what people are thinking. One jerk even wrote the possibility of AIDS.
