It's pretty obvious that the iMacs we'll see at Mountain Lion launch will be like the actual ones with a speed-bump and USB3.

A desktop computer at 50-60 cm away from our eyes doesn't have this urgent need for a Retina Display. The actual display is already gorgeous.

Even if Apple will launch a Retina iMac in 2013, they will increase the pixel density just enough so that our eyes can't distinguish pixels — I already hardly distinguish the pixels on my 24" iMac at 50-60 centimeters away.

Does the current 2011 iMac ever suffer when using multiple instances of resource intensive libraries, such as LASS, Symphobia etc? I'm currently using a 2009 17" MacBook Pro with 8gb RAM, 2.8Ghz Core 2 Duo, but I find that it is struggling to perform now on a daily basis, receiving Error while trying to sync Audio and MIDI or Disk Is Too Slow or System Overload errors.

I can't say because I don't use those libraries or Kontakt(?). My last project had 16 MIDI tracks, two instances of GPO 4, GAS and IK CSR Hall verb. It was using 11 to 14 percent of the CPU in Activity Monitor. My Daw by itself only uses .8% of the CPU.

I always had pop and click issues with laptop hard drives so I went back to a desktop.

I don't understand what the problem is with just buying a 2011 iMac if you really need a new Mac.

Is OK if I WANT (as opposed to NEED) a new iMac with a USB3 and a better gfx card? ;)

A lot of us don't "need" to do anything. A lot of us simply "want" a newer imac than what is currently offered.

There's actually no way to buy an BTO iMac in Germany since a few weeks (only at the :apple: store)...

I hear you but it looks like "The times they are a-changin' ". B. Dylan

any way he then looked around (shifty eyes) and said ....

Just between you and me just wait on buying because there will be a new imac very soon.
I said what?? how do you know that?

He said well I don't for sure but I do know that apple has stopped supplying us with imacs. We cant order any more of them. And I have worked here for a long time and that is a sure fire way of knowing there is an update in the pipeline. (actually said in german)

Interesting, sales people normally do anything for a sale.

It might be a good sign :D

That's not true, I bought 2 BTO iMacs last Week. They were not in stock officially (cyberport.de) but they could get them from apple in a very short time without problems.

My guess is, that the resellers are just aware of a coming iMac update as we are. Resellers probably also expected an update at WWDC, so they lowered their stocks before the event. The update did not happen then, but they simply do not want to put their warehouses full with soon-outdated iMacs when the update is probably just around the corner. So they order very cautious supply from apple. I don't think there are order restrictions coming from apple and I don't think resellers know more than we do.

I expect the new iMacs coming with ML, everything else would simply not make much sense for Apple. It would be a silent update if they come earlier. In combination with the ML release they can make a little fuss about the new iMacs.

I don't understand what the problem is with just buying a 2011 iMac if you really need a new Mac. A modest speed bump and probably USB 3.0 is all one can hope for by waiting for the next refresh.

I use the Mac for my work, and I want a machine that can last at least 4-5 years, so it's obvious that I don't buy an iMac that was update more than a year ago. I want the most recent specs machine and I'll wait for it.

We can still get the current gen iMacs next day through all our suppliers and three days from Apple. This is not indicative of a refresh coming up immediately, sorry. The reality is, Apple has primary production ramped up to meet the demands of the new notebooks just released (some of whoms availability has slipped to 4 weeks). Normally before a refresh, availability in various models dwindles to almost none, or limited selection from the suppliers, and from Apple its availability slips from days to a week, to weeks until the new model is announced. Nothing we are seeing right now is indicative on an immediate refresh. I suppose what could be happening is, as notebook production is dominating demand right now, Apple are limiting iMac supplies to overseas markets?

maybe or maybe not. Could be apples control over supplies are better today. The macbook pro was still in stock before WWDC though a new one got released. to say that "nothing indicates a refresh fairly soon" is wrong....But, yes, it could go weeks or a couple of months - but I doubt it would be much more than that.

I don't think it indicates anything, to be honest with you. Just because they are still selling iMacs, doesn't mean much.

They only have a 5 day inventory turn around. Pretty easy to control that - if they sell X iMacs a day, then they only need to build X imacs to keep the inventory level.

If they are just updating a few things (Ivy bridge, USB3, GFX) this go round, then it's not like they have to ramp up a new assembly line. They just start building new mobos with all that stuff on them and dropping them in. Everything indicates a refresher more so than a redesign.

There really is nothing wrong .... well 'cept there are no BRAGGING RIGHTS with a 2011 unit. :D

----------

seems amazon.com doesn't have the imac 27 in stock anymore.

I just checked Amazon.com and they have both version of the 27" in stock.

They quote having 11 of the $1,699 ones and just say " In Stock " for the $1999 model.

Norway gigantic seller put no more stock

Norway giant reseller stop stocking in their warehouse. Only BTO.

This always appeared to be like this before new mac releases. Happy day :)

Yes. Our supplier stock levels slipped to none in the weeks preceding WWDC and through Apple direct would just sit in processing and never proceed.
