You could easily turn an iPhone into a DS. Nintendo should do that instead of the stupid DSi (worse than old DS and has useless camera) and 3DS (hurts eyes, not that interesting).

It will probably have just one button.

I feel if Apple made a game controller it would be a wireless accessory.

Making a "detachable" iPhone controller is very un-Apple as it becomes completely useless when detached from the phone, and would take up a lot of space. Plus it would have to be compatible with iPod Touch as well, meaning it would either need adapters or be awkwardly shaped for one of the devices.
The iCade products are wireless, the one above simply holds (will hold) the phone/ipod for simplicity.

Joystick for the iMac, please!

I just got EVAC from the App Store. Great game for the iMac, but using the arrow buttons to control it kinda sucks. A joystick would be perfect!

Wirelessly posted

Apple hardly makes games, why would they want to make a controller? Seems like they want to go the touchscreen, button-less route anyways, what with just a home button for iDevices, and huge trackpads for Macs and Macbooks.

3DS hurts your eyes!?... Weakling

Forced evolution

Out of due diligence Apple probably is developing something like this, but remember why SJ originally killed the arrow keys on the original Mac keyboard: to force people to use/develop for the mouse. The iOS touch interfaces are one of the system's defining features; I'm sure Apple would rather steer/encourage/force people to innovate with/around it than to have an iOS device "regress" to the old (somebody else's) way of doing things.

I don't play any iOS games purely due to the fact of no controller. If apple made their own controller, I'd definitely dump some money into the gaming ecosystem,

Unfortunately I agree with your point. I'm dying for a decent controller though.

If Apple made a game controller...

If Apple ever bought nintendo - (its never gonna happen) and made a games controller it definitely need only one button for sure

I’d be more than happy if they’d just add support for Bluetooth PS3 controllers to iOS – doesn’t OS X already have this? I’m not sure that Apple needs to build their own controller hardware, although that could potentially be a neater solution for gaming when one is out and about, especially with the iPhone.

Sounds good to me. Add ps3 controller support to the ipad. Although I'm not sure how that generates revenue for apple.

I'd prefer a free standing controller myself with compatibility for all iOS devices as well as desktops.

Something like the onlive controller, the best controller for comfort and usability yet. which incidentally has been shown working on an iPad with the cureently still unreleased Onlive iOS app :/

Doesnt make sense

My personal feeling is that Apple would rather steer developers toward making games that work well with a touchscreen; there's games that require more precision, but that's what consoles are for. Apple releasing a hardware controller for a touchscreen device is as likely in my mind as them adding a slideout keyboard to the iPhone, which ain't happening. Both are admitting deficiencies in touchscreen-driven devices, which is not something Apple wants to do.

I think it's far more likely that Apple will incorporate the rumored haptic feedback tech to allow developers the ability to include iPad buttons a user can feel.

Apple won't be making stand-alone game controller for iOS devices. At most, they may be doing an iPhone software app to control games on iPads / AppleTVs. But stand-alone hardware controller? Not happening.

Agreed. They may have toyed around with the idea or even prototyped some to help understand how they work and if they would have a place in the system. But that is not the same as it being a valid work in progress. Anymore than Apple getting a patent on something means they are definitely going to do it.

The writing was on the wall the moment they did things like put a gyroscope in an iPad and special features in Airplay. All that stuff adds up to no separate controller or console. You want a 'game machine' you get an Apple TV and airplay whatever game you want to the screen. There are even some that will let you use an iphone/ipod touch as a controller and have the game on your iPad. Imagine a set up for something like Real Racing HD where you have the driver view on your TV (via Airplay), a map on your iPad and you tilt your phone left and right like a steering wheel, 'lean' forward to go faster and back to slow down. tap your thumbs or such for a hard brake

You also have games like Monster Dash and Temple Run where you can control the game with simple moves that don't actually require you to look at the controller.
