Great product design overall but they seem to have trouble with simple accessoires.

This is good. I don’t want my older iPad to become useless when I buy a new one. In fact, I won’t buy another one until they become useful for longer.

I’m waiting exactly this to jb it and update HomePod mini in my home.
But Apple is centered on gimmick so go on..

It would be great if they could make this work with existing models too. I would love to use my iPad Mini this way as a nightstand clock.
This. It would also help save many iPads from ending up in a landfill somewhere if they can extend this support as far back as possible.

If I can turn my iPad Air 2 into a smart home display, I’d be much more inclined to upgrade too!

Huh? What smart home functionality would this dock add to the iPad that the iPad doesn’t already have by itself? Just louder speakers? How is that different from other third party iPad speaker docks? Or are there none? If so, why not?

My iPad is mostly just on my desk plugged in when I'm at home, so changing it into a smart display would be cool.

I'm guessing this will be like $300 though, not interested if so.

That "desklamp" iMac was my first Apple computer, and it was a gem. I came to it after going a little nuts trying to keep a windows machine going.
As for me, when I bought that Apple computer, we were allowed to dual boot, into either OS9 or OS10, as some software wasn't ready for OS 10. I wish, and I know I am in the minority here, we could dual boot into the new iPad pro, either iOS or macOS.

Why bother? I remember the iPod HiFi. That sort of thing can be third party.

Anyway, unlike most android tablets, iPads already have decent speakers.

Just concentrate on producing value for money HomePods, and for the margins go with a wide functioning, stellar sounding soundbar with satellite HomePods and a satellite camera that can be put on top of the TV.

They should have done this years ago when HomeKit was rolled out. It's "the missing link" IMHO. I received a Google Home as a gift and ended up selling it on eBay because the few Google things I use, it couldn't even do well. An Apple home hub (even if it's really just an iPad-enabling accessory) is an instabuy for me.
