Apple Highlights AirPods Pro With Active Noise Cancellation in New Ad

As long as the AirPods Pros carry the 2B588 firmware, Apple has no business touting their noise cancellation. Aren't there laws against false advertising?

what? In the longest thread on this site about the APP firmware, the major consensus is 2B588 is the best performing firmware yet. I’m on my second APP purchased first 3wks after launch, sold and back again 5wks ago both when purchased uses this firmware. The first mode I had updated to 2C54 which was junk.

ANC was AWFUL on my AirPods that were on the 2C54 update. Apple replaced them because their ipad didn't even recognize the firmware...now my AirPods are on 2B588 and the ANC is still bad. Do they replace ones on 2B588 or is everyone on that?

I’d have to disagree.

I don’t think anyone in their right mind would say the ANC is better than Sony’s WF-1000XM3’s but it’s still quite good and comparable to high frequency response/action.

this commercial made a bad mistake ... first showing the girl enabling Ambient Sound before crossing a street yet disabling in while walking .... I almost imagined a car hitting her in dance mode; of corse Apple wouldn’t do that nor would I wish that. Apple should really think about that midpoint section and adjust it.

Does this drown out the London Underground noise? Can't listen to audio books in those trains at all with the regular airpods. I see a lot of people with Over the head phones in underground, which makes sense.

Off topic a bit and go ahead, call me an old curmudgeon but interacting with people with pods in their ears is a big downer to me. It gives off a vibe of 'I may or may not be listening to what you're saying to me, and you're not that significant that I'll remove these from my ear hole to let you know for sure'. But perhaps that's the point! :)

2B584 was the launch firmware and the noise cancellation was so good, you almost felt like you were deaf when it was on. Everything was eliminated, even with no music playing.

2B588 weakened the noise cancellation in November. Then in December, 2C54 was even worse. 2C54 was recalled, but 2B588 is still broken. A lot of people are confused and think 2B588 is "good" and 2C54 is "bad". The reality is both are "bad" compared to 2B584.

Apple's radio silence about this makes me think it's a liability issue. Either way the 2B588 firmware made an incredible product a "good-at-best" one. I wonder if there could be a class action lawsuit incoming, especially if they release a new version of the Pros which have the feature restored.

It all depends, I have a pair and at all time if I am having a conversation I remove both pods. If it is just a quick question when I’m working out I usually just remove one.
But at 29 I might not classify as young.
And to be honest, if they are younger then me I guess your conversation have to pretty damm interesting for them to listen in. Most people you don’t know is not that interesting.

I don’t think comparing over-ear to in-ear ANC is the same beast. I think it’s two separate use cases, at least for me :)

I’m totally with you. A new pet peeve of mine is people with in-ear headphones who do things that provoke a verbal interaction then ignore you (for example, get in an elevator then stand directly in front of the buttons so no one else can press them and it takes you 5 tries to get their attention andddd you’ve missed your floor).

My Airpods Pro had the update to 2C54. Called Apple (in the Netherlands), they won't replace them. They acknowledge the fact that the firmware has reduced NC, but otherwise state that they are functional and that they are aware of the situation and are "working on a fix". Probably the fix will be the announcement of Airpods Pro 2, so they can take your money once again and render your "old" Airpods Pro obsolete.

Phone support for Apple is stupid. They said the same thing to me, so I scheduled an appointment at the store, their iPad didn't recognize the 2C54 firmware, and I got a replacement pair. Set up an appointment in store.

the Sony WH-1000XM3 is the 3rd generation award winning over the ear stereo headphones with ANC. The Sony WF-1000XM3’s are the in-ear ANC true wireless stereo earphones ;)

this a direct comparison as they debuted late spring 2019.

Okay just watched the damm thing.
1, that's some short presses to change mode. I feel like I have to hold it down forever.
2, the ANC is no way as good as portrayed here.

if people bought them expecting it to work like this they will get disappointed

And no wonder comments are turned off on YouTube

How can it be unprecedented when it's far worse than a few months ago? Maybe they meant unprecedented in terms of how bad it is now.

The driver re-opening the door is the most unrealistic part of this advert.

Not a great ad. The timing was off, and changing the lighting and scene didn't really work (for me) as they intended. They should have just kept the same scenes, but silenced the background noise. And a different sound track is needed.

Replying to myself... I watched the ad two more times. While the style is not my favourite, the ad does warm up to be okay. But "Transparency Mode".... do they make all the people around you transparent, so that's why she kept running into people? 🤣

All these comments about the firmware...
Regarding the ad, I didn't really like the dance moves of the dancer. As the commercial went on it made me think of the Upside Down from Stranger Things for some reason...

If it’s a firmware issue, can Apple just release new firmware in the future to fix the issue? Or will we need to get new AirPods pros?

Furthermore, I’m pretty sure I’ve got the latest firmware as I just got my AirPods pro a few weeks ago. As a Londoner, the noise cancellation is very good, however on the tube I have to put the volume up to 75% or so.

When I’m in the office with ANC on, I can easily be at 50% and drown out most things.

Interested to hear why the new firmware is so bad. I understand I haven’t heard the older firmware, but I’m quite happy with my AirPods pros.

I just returned mine, the right Airpod Pro fell everytime I move, eat or talk, never happened with the 1st and 2nd Gen Airpods (I even use those for sleep).
I put another tip in the middle of the Right Airpod, from a JBL headphones that I use for swimming, and after a few hours my ear canal hurt, never had that issue with other headphones, even with the JBL that seal my ear.

So the transparency and noise cancellation is great, but I can't stand the pain after a few hours in my ear canal.

I got the firmware update, and my AirPods Pro noise cancellation works great. Not sure what all the hubbub is. Guess it’s cool to complain.
