Lol, didn't you read what I wrote? Your statement is certainly false.

Unless they stole them, they paid for them. Free with purchase is not the same as free.

Edit: "Free with purchase" is marketing name for a discount. If you buy a laptop for $1200 and get $100 headphones for free, the seller gave you a 7.7% discount on your purchase. (100/(1200+100) = 7.7%)

they don't "need" it to be a success. Apple has so much cash on hand it could run a hundred years without making a dollar
Management is not paid for sitting on cash, but for making it. Apple shares are priced for growth. If that sentiment changes, the company still will be fine, but Tim Apple will be unemployed very quickly.

I'm sure there'll be some who replace their monitors with something like this, I'm just not sure how practical it actually is.

For gaming, the question is 'is it comfortable enough to wear occasionally for a few hours?' Unless you're a really heavy gamer, I'd imagine that's somewhere between 1-5 hours per session. If you don't feel like wearing it, you just don't play.

For work, it's 'is it comfortable enough to wear every day for 6-9 hours,' particularly if you can't afford or don't want to pay a lot of money for this and for monitors. I'm not sure I'd really want to go down that route tbh.

That's fair, but personally I wouldn't be prepared to pay what they're asking for this.
I'm not sure how practical it will be either. I'm just hoping it will. If it's not practical, I would return it. If I can't use it for 9 hours straight, in case I sold/threw away all my monitors, I'd still be left with my laptop screen. I would prioritize Vision Pro usage to those that requires multiple monitors (development mostly) and go back to my 15 inch screen for email/testing/websurfing/etc. I do this too with the Airpod Max. I can't wear it for too long since it gets too warm, so I only use it when I need to focus (development) and go back to either airpods Pro or none at all.

To all the “gasping at the price” people:

The original Apple released in 1976 was priced at $666.66 which today is equivalent to $3,581.63.

The original Mac debuted in 1984 for $2,495. Today that would be $7,340.

The price will not determine if the product is a failure. The price is fine.

Spot-on. As an aside, many here don't understand (nor want to learn about) the potential of AR and the product so the only thing they can come up with in order to take a feel-good swing at Apple is by associating "gasp" with is price. Even though that was not the context of "gasp" in the story.

Pretty lame.

Replying with my late edit from above:

"Free with purchase" is marketing name for a discount. If you buy a laptop for $1200 and get $100 headphones for free, the seller gave you a 7.7% discount on your purchase. (100/(1200+100) = 7.7%)
Yeah, captain obvious, but this is completely irrelevant.

I hope to replace my room with the Vision Pro. I need an extra room because I need a gigantic desk which holds 6 monitors (2x3 config). If the Vision Pro can simulate that, I'd get rid of my room and I can work anywhere. If I can go from 3 bd apt to 2bd apt, that will save me a lot of money. I'm holding off buying the Studio monitor because I expect I won't need my monitors anymore.
I tried it with the Quest Pro, but the resolution was too low and it gave me a headache.
This is similar to my desired use case, albeit not with 6 virtual monitors and because I want to be able to travel without being limited to one tiny laptop screen or having to ship monitors ahead of me. But I'm still a few years from telling my employer that I will no longer be based anywhere (except in theory). Our kids have to finish college first. So it probably won't be the first generation Vision Pro that I buy. But $3,500 for a headset MacBook and screens is reasonable pricing, if it can deliver on usable business applications. It sounds mundane, but I'm looking forward to the reviews of Word and Excel in Vision Pro.

It's "obvious" you are hung up on the marketing. You: "I'd be curious to see what percentage did actually pay for airpods."

If the AirPods were actually free, you could return the laptop from my example and the retailer would happily let you keep the headphones.

For once, I am actually happy that this is not available in my country yet, or will be anytime soon.
I gladly allow the beta-testers in US and in whatever other places this will be available at, to help Apple to make this enough good for us over here a bit later.
No hurry for me, but I am sure there’s potential for it when it have evolved quite a bit more in a few years. Right now it looks just fugly and like something that came out of pregnancy too early.

But I really want a new and gorgeous and insanely great M3 MacBook Air soon 😊

There was an audible gasp from me as well at the $3499 price tag.

Its the cost of maybe two high end iPhones (with much more high end hardware, more sensors, more complex software, etc.) and much less than a Pro XDR display.

The pricing is fine for what it is, this isn't intended to be a toy, more of a laptop replacement/supplement for some and its still early access developer hardware.

Think high end MacBook Pro user rather than aimed at the MacBook Air/iPad consumer focus just yet. That will come later once the tech matures.
