Oh it gets you something. It gets you nonstop notifications on your Mac that your iCloud storage is full from iMessage chatlogs and constantly pressures you to subscribe.
You are right about that lol soon the nonstop notifications will show up in Apple Vision Pro. 🙈

5GB is a joke in 2023. It should be 5GB per device. Preferably 10.
I think they should allow at least one iPhone back up as standard for every iCloud account. Whilst the cost isn't really an issue for most when paying £1100+ on a phone, it just seems like a bit tacky for a supposed high end brand to push all these mini subscriptions.

You would think it costs than more money having to deal with upset customers at the Apple Store complaining about loosing all their data because their pathetic free 5GB storage option wasn't enough to store their back up before they broke things

I wonder if it's cheaper to just make a home network drive versus paying for iCloud.

Well, that's steep considering we should be getting 50GB for free.
Why should it be free? I'm sorry, but are you aware of operational costs for storage?
  • Electricity
  • Hardware
  • Maintenance
  • Development
  • Customer support
How can you expect all that for free? The fact that you get 5 GB is fine, and their pricing is still very competitive against Microsoft and Google.

Love coming to these threads and see people whining about 3 quid.
It's a 25% increase to those people though, so it's the principle of it.

Apple One used to cost £19.95, now costs £22.95. Clearly the next hike will take it to at least £25 then Apple will wonder why people start to cancel their One subscriptions. It's just too much money for what you get.

Yes that’s how the world works. Milk used to cost 83 cents a gallon too.

In India, they have not increased, but I have left 1GB free from 5GB. I will subscribe to the 50GB plan when I reach 5GB.😉
50GB: Rs 75
200GB: Rs 219
2TB: Rs 749

Aren't they supposed to notify us of the price increase? Thats a pretty ****** thing to do if not!

they didnt? That seems illegal (at least in the EU). They have to send an email at least to inform you about the change and give you the opportunity to cancel. Otherwise staying quiet counts as "accepting" the change but again, they need to inform

C'mon, Apple. No need to nickel and dime us.
So, the cheapest AWS cost I found was $0.0125 per GB.

Based on that, you cost Apple (minus profit margin on the AWS price of about 10%), $0.675 per year for 5 GB of data. It doesn't sound a lot, but then you are excluding the entire product on top, as this is only raw storage.

In 2018, Apple managed 850 million users. So let's put that $0.0675 into context.

The total "free" raw storage cost to Apple is: $57,375,000 per year. (Fixed my stupid calculation error. I added an extra 0 on the calculator. It's still close to $60m and that's just the base cost).

I also want to remind you the customer numbers were from 2018, and it has grown since then.

So, your "nickel and dime" comment really isn't about nickels and dimes. It's about hundreds of millions of dollars.

And those saying Apple is being stingy...work out the real maths behind the product. I am not one to ever defend Apple first, but it's clear many people have simply no clue. Apple is not a charity. It's a business.

Another reason why I haven't nor will I ever pay for iCloud. What a joke of a service. 100gb of OneDrive storage is bundled with the $20 a year Microsoft Office 365 subscription.
I was surprised at how low you indicate the MS Office subscription is so I looked it up. I don't see that low of a price. $20/year?

What I see is this:
Microsoft 365 Personal: $69.99/yr
Microsoft 365 Business Basic; $6 per user per month. I don't know if there is a minimum number of user for this plan, but say that only 1 user is required, that would be $72/yr

Where are you getting the $20/yr price? If that's the price, it is a great deal.

I assume Apple runs out of datacenters? So they have to milk each customer more to maintain their And all stakeholders unsustainable profit margin?
