Apple has hired at least a dozen former AMD graphics engineers for its Orlando offices in recent months, according to a MacRumors review of employees' LinkedIn profiles.

The majority of hires, which include a graphics architect, hardware engineer and others, occurred in January of this year.

AMD laid off a number of employees last year in a corporate reorganization, and fired more in January. It seems likely that Apple hired a number of the laid off Orlando AMD engineers for a new team it's building in the region.

The company has also posted new job listings for Site Managers to head GPU teams in both Orlando and Cupertino.

These hires and new listings are in addition to job listings posted last month for chip engineers for its Orlando Design Center.

The new job listings ask for extensive experience in building and leading teams, including hiring, mentoring, and more. They also focus on intellectual property development as well. The listings in both Cupertino and Orlando are identical.

Apple's interest in GPUs (Graphics Processing Unit) and CPUs coincides with an effort to develop more of its technology in house. Apple is a licensee for ARM and Imagination Technology, which power the company's iPhones and iPads.

I don't like this news... I want Apple to use Intel Graphics in the iPhone and iPad.
AMD and NVidia have produced far better graphics chips than Intel. I'd say let's see what they come up with...

nVidia, AMD, nVidia...AMD. Apple just cannot make up its mind when it comes to graphics.

You do understand they've hired graphic engineers, not specifically AMD engineers. They can work on anything Apple wants them to work on.

I don't like this news... I want Apple to use Intel Graphics in the iPhone and iPad.

Custom implementations of Imagination Technologies' IP. Somewhat unprecedented as SoC makers usually select a standard core configuration offered by their graphics vendor of choice. Apple owns ~ 10% of ImgTec, so it makes sense they'd get custom access.

I'm laughing hard at all the ignorants in this thread. The GPU hiring is not for MacBook or Mac lines. It is for the iOS lines. It is not even for Radeon/nVidia drivers.

I can't stress the following statement enough, but.....

Good thing it's not NVIDIA this time.

Why? Mines Nvidia and has been perfectly fine. Nothing wrong with either brand these day's. Sure Nvidia had an issue with failing but that was a few years ago now.

Personally this news makes no sense to me but hey ho. I would imagine it's for software rather then hardware? Also I think PowerVR and Tegra are way in advance and Apple would find it hard to match them, also why would they?

Would.....

love to see better graphics support in all Mac lines. Hope that improvements are not restricted to iOS software and hardware. But I am not seeing Apple developing their own GPUS in a near future.

I got 2 theories about it. Firstly, Apple might prepare base for game console which is not high possible to be released any time soon, however they may release game console. 2nd one is, Apple may consolidate hardware of any Mac in order to play video game easily or much better compatible for architecture softwares.

Nah, I prefer to stay in my own little world. It's obvious that GFX development means we're getting dedicated graphics cards for the whole Mac line, I suspect the same thing will happen in the next year or so for the rest of the iDevices as well.
